What a Disappointment – This Place Has Gone Completely Downhill
I don’t know what happened to this place over the past five years, but it’s nowhere near what it used to be. I gave it another few shots recently and left more frustrated than satisfied.
First off, the portion sizes are laughable. They serve certain items in these oversized plates that create the illusion of a generous portion, but the actual dessert is tucked away in a tiny bowl in the center, as if they’re trying to hide how little you’re actually getting. It's borderline insulting. You’re paying a premium and getting dessert fit for a toddler. The only item that’s even remotely decent in size is the waffles.
The ice cream... Always half-melted by the time it gets to the table. Not even a fluke, it’s consistent. If I wanted a puddle, I’d leave a tub in the sun. It's not even premium ice cream. Cheap tasting, watery, and bland, it adds absolutely nothing to the dessert. You’d expect better quality from a place that charges this much.
The milkshakes are incredibly underwhelming, bland, basic, and nowhere near worth the price. The range is limited, and what they do offer is made with just a few simple ingredients, resulting in a thin, watery texture. It’s obvious the base... the gelato, is low quality, which explains why the shakes lack richness and depth. For what they charge, you'd expect something far more indulgent
And the brownie, let’s not even pretend that’s what it is. It’s not warm, it’s not rich, and the texture is all wrong. Brownies are supposed to have a slightly cakey bite with a soft center, this one is just a strange, overly gooey block that tastes nothing like a real brownie. It’s confusing, bland, and honestly feels like it was made by someone who’s never actually had a proper brownie before. And look how small the portion is. Just 6-7 small blocks with hardly any chocolate sauce.
The other day I tried the Umali pudding for £9.25 and the portion was so ridiculously small I actually asked for an alternative item off the menu on the spot. You don’t even need to take my word for it, look at the stock photo I’ve attached and see for yourself. And then look at the second photo of what this dish is actually supposed to look like: a proper portion, not a sample-size joke. The contrast is shocking.
The decline in quality is shocking. This place used to be decent, but now it's all about gimmicky presentation and zero substance. Style over quality. Every time I try to give it a chance, it just reminds me why I stopped going.
And by the way if you're actually craving a proper brownie, not just some overpriced, poorly made dessert, go to Kake Temptations instead. Their brownies are warm, rich, and satisfying, and one portion can easily serve three. It’s everything a brownie should be, and everything this place fails to deliver. The only issue with that place is that they close early and I'm usually only free late evenings. And if you're after a proper milkshake, go to Madisons or Shake Sheikh instead, both which are 50m and 100m away. Creamy, rich, and actually worth your money
Heavenly Desserts is a total waste of money and...
Read moreThe strapline for Heavenly Desserts is "made with love". If this is so, then I'm in a toxic relationship.
The flowers at the entrance are a curiosity. At first glance they looked like flowers you'd see in a funeral parlour. On closer inspection they may well have been, or from actual graves, as they were in headstone urns! From the rest of my experience here I'm confident this isn't a clever play on the world "Heavenly".
Ordered a basque cheesecake but didn't want the chocolate sauce all over it; because why would you want that with a basque? I asked for cream instead and the waitress was in shock that I wanted pouring cream. Apparently they don't do pouring cream. Surely having prerequisite for claiming to be a dessert shop. Anyway, I was told the chocolate sauce came on the side. Then when it came it was covered in the sauce. Yet another shocked-face moment when I sent it back asking for it without the sauce. Regardless, it wasn't worth the argument not waiting for a grainy cheesecake with differing textures throughout (a sign of old basque).
The disappointment (my partner's description) didn't end there. The sticky toffee pudding, although clearly having dates in which was nice, was miniscule for the price, luke warm, and covered in what can only be considered as gravel (meant to be honeycomb, but would make a great component of pebble dash).
Maybe it was an act of god in that this was the only place in walking distance before a show in horrible weather... Or maybe Leicester is just full of awful...
Read moreFrom the moment I walked in this place I felt unwelcome. The luxury veneer of the decor could not hide the poor service. I asked for a booth, which you would think would be easy given there were at least two that were empty. The waitress had to go ask a colleague what I meant by a booth. After 15-20 minutes another member of staff finally came to ask what we wanted. We duly ordered about £25 worth of desserts and coke. As I was very thirsty I asked for a glass of tap water to accompany my coke.
The waiter refused.
I was flabbergasted. After he left to fulfil the order, I sat fuming until I realised that I didn't want to give my hard earned money to people who refuse a glass of water to paying customers. I got up and told the waiter (so that other customers could hear) that I wouldn't be spending my money in an establishment that refused water to thirsty customers. At which point, embarrassed, he tried to u-turn and get me a glass. Too late. He and his colleagues had already demonstrated how contemptible is their view of their customers. It was lucky for me actually because I then went 50m down the road to Madison's where I got great service, great gelato and a milkshake to die for. Do yourselves a favour and walk right on by Heavenly Desserts and go try Madison's. You won't regret it. PS - I told my girlfriend who runs a pub what had happened. She informed me it is illegal to refuse a glass of water in an establishment serving...
