Nestled in the heart of Brighton, perfectly situated on the edge of the trendy lanes lies a small, yet well formed nucleus of culinary heaven – Patty&Bun. I took my 3 daughters for the second visit as we had all agreed on the first that these were possibly the best burgers we had ever had and the second visit didn’t disappoint either. As you enter the restaurant you are greeted with a smile and made to feel welcome, we had a buggy and were placed perfectly towards the back under the “pink and juicy” sign enabling us to store all of our stuff within a comfortable distance. The whole place has a look and feel of traditional school furniture meets industrial engineering and I quite liked that. Within moments our drinks order was taken by a waitress who reminded me a lot of Kayle Cuoco from The Big Bang Theory. The menu itself is not extensive and they do not directly cater for children with a kids menu, however as with all great restaurants if you are going to excel then do a few things really well rather than having a menu that makes the encyclopaedia look like a short story. As for the children they were more than happy to let them share, take things out etc etc – agile and flexible.
I am a foodie at heart and wanted to try something spicy and love chicken in a bun, yet having recently started to make my own smashed burgers I was also interested to taste the beef burger – I ordered the chilli chicken burger and added an extra patty (greedy indeedy) – as I joked with the waitress she quipped that if I added pulled pork as well we could call it “the farm yard burger” – I would be super keen to see this on the menu please!
In the background is this constant, yet low sound of modern, urban music – the kind of music and vibe that reminds me of the cool kid I wish I had been in the past, the kind of person I wish I could be now, yet am too old – it made me feel youthful again. It was about this time between orders in and before food delivered that the toddlers fuse blew and she no longer wanted to scratch art into the paper menus on the table with a biro nor did she find peter rabbit the movie interesting – so we took a very short walk around the restaurant and went over to the cooking area to watch the food be prepared. For a small kitchen with very few chefs they are organised with military precision – grill at the back, and a production line of burgers flowing. We can call this ‘optimised culinary mastery’.
The food was delivered – beautify wrapped in such a way you feel like you will spoil it if you were to open it, but then the smell hits you and you think F* it lets go! As I unwrapped my burger, the compression the wrapping had provided dissipated and what erupted Infront of me was non less than a skyscraper of meat and flavour – I was, in this moment, the happiest man alive. I had asked for 2 types of chilli sauce, their standard and the XXX – both were fantastic. I love spice and the hotter the better. However, I actually found the milder chilli sauce much more flavourful than the XXX and wondered if there was a way of pepping up that one to make the ultimate sauce. I am also not ashamed to say that I had to use a knife and fork – that has to be a sign of a good burger?
The lack of plates may seem strange, but it just adds to the experience and as my daughter was eating her burger (with a smile) she turned to me and said “dad my burger is dripping, is that good” and I looked back at her and said “yes darling, it really is”.
So the moral of the story is that you should all go to Patty&Bun – I will be going back and next time I will not be driving as I want to try and frozen...
Read moreWeirdly a very disappointing burger place for a chain like this. From the lack of flavour to mid service, something is wrong at this location and here is why.
Food - ordered the Don Jon burger which is basically a double cheeseburger with slices of pancetta. The server asked how I went like it cooked and today went with medium well and to say the least it came out like that. But the beef was dripping wet and soaked the bottom bun. The whole burger tasted just like beef, no taste of the onions or cheese in this burger. Not even was the patties seasoned with salt and pepper and definitely no mallard just sad wet grey patties. Now it says it comes with pancetta which is fancy bacon. Got a single half a slice in my burger. Definitely not worth it. The rosemary fries were missing the rosemary it seemed and had a lot of salt, way too much and I like to salt my fries in most places but that was too much. Now the double chocolate milkshake. It was basically just chocolate nesquik in a small 300ml glass definitely not worth £5.50. Both myself and my partner where disappointed with the quality and price.
Service - nothing much to say in a good way. The server who took are order was nice. But everyone else was rushing and just putting things down with us knowing. They also didn't bring us are burgers on plates just wrapped up like it was to go. Now with minimum interaction from them and no smiles or how's it going. When we went to pay they automatically put a service charge of 12.5% on the bill. Two people ordering food not a party. No reason to put that automatically on. I asked for it to be taken off and the bill guy seemed annoyed and huffed off to re do it. Definitely one of the worst services I have had and to think you want a tip for not interacting with me is ridiculous.
Atmosphere - it's a burger chain that is trying to be high end. Music was a tad to high. The layout of the restaurant could be better placed on the end of a strangers table. The stranger having a dog on there lap the whole time is definitely not sanitary. Now there is one 2 toilets in that place and both definitely had not been cleaned. Piss on the floor and skids in the bowl with a loose toilet seat. Dirt and debris around the sink with a loose bottle of soap just left there.
Many reasons I gave this rating today. It's just not good. The food was edible but not great. Will not be back again at this location until something has...
Read moreI have always been a big fan of Patty and Bun, as they provide high quality burgers for a fair price. I recently ate at Patty and Bun Brighton for my friends birthday and as always I was stunned.
The building is amazing, featuring chairs outside if you want to smoke or eat in the sun ( if we ever get blessed with some sunshine that is) and a large seating area inside to fit all sizes of groups.
The staff are very friendly, especially the manager, Jack, who always has a beautiful smile on his face.
The drinks menu at Patty and Bun is very broad. offering thick juicy shakes for vegans and normal peeps! They sport a range of canned soft drinks and beers, the ginger beer is my particular favorite. They also sport a range of cocktails, from classics to house chosen cocktails such as Jack's Matcha Tea, which is delicious if I must say.
Onto the main event, the food! I was very happy with my food. I went for the vegan burger with bacon and pickles and although the name of the burger is lost to me, it's holy flavour still reigns king in my wildest dreams. I loved the burger it was soft, flavourful and moist (in a good way ;)). My friend ate the lamb burger and he was also very pleased. We both indulged in rosemary chips which are crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle making the perfect chip. We also had vegan coleslaw, which although doesn't taste like normal coleslaw, still tastes very good and better complements the burgers when compared to normal coleslaw.
I am very happy with my visit at Patty and Bun and I hope to go to the massive success that is the Patty...
