Can’t comment on the food as didn’t get near any. On Saturday 30/09/17, my wife and I were looking for a place to dine in the evening. We ventured out from our nearby hotel and didn’t want to walk too far as I have mobility problems. We were a bit early as the local eateries were either serving from 1730 or 1800. It was around 1745 when we spotted Grumbles (aptly named as it turned out!). A female member of staff outside advised they weren’t open yet. We asked if we could venture inside as I really needed to sit down. She agreed. We went in, found a table and sat. Within moments a frosty and stern woman, quite tall and slim with long brown hair, advised us they weren’t open yet. We endeavoured to explain our difficulty and that permission had been given. She stormed past us and remonstrated with the waitress outside. She stormed back in and disappeared into the restaurant. My wife and I were stunned and immediately elected to leave. On the way out I apologised to the waitress if we’d got her into any trouble. Luckily we ventured just a little further to an Italian restaurant that greeted us immediately and showed us to our table. Surely a prerequisite of running a restaurant is basic people skills and a desire to get customers in? Disgraceful. Good luck to others who might venture...
Read moreI am bamboozled as to how I can have lived in London for 20-odd years and missed this place! I had a cousin (with two children) visit and I ended up booking a table here as it was close to their hotel and had good reviews. I must admit I was charmed. We were given a table in an alcove by the stairs, reasonably quaint and ambient I must admit; and mercifully away from the toilets (a personal phobia of mine, haha). The "ordinary claret" was reasonably far from ordinary, and all the food we ordered was really rather good. The quinoa salad was more a "hunt-for-some-quinoa" salad but they fixed that immediately. My mussels were fresh and the sauce (white wine based I reckon) was very good. The kids ate fish and pasta with they enjoyed (a bizarre sight - kids not fussing over food). The desserts were nice, especially the sticky date pudding, a "close cousin of the sticky toffee pudding" (who is anyone kidding; it's the same thing). Service was near-impeccable. I'll definitely be coming again. p.s. apologies folks, if the kids and I got a tad carried away when giggling over...
