Excellent meal at Taro, made even more excellent by such incredibly friendly and welcoming staff.
I was meeting a friend I’d not seen in years, so we spent the first 40 minutes talking without looking at the menus. The staff left us to it and we didn’t feel rushed at all. They were always nearby and attentive the moment we were ready to order food and drinks, and spoke us through their 4 house-made signature cocktails.
I opted for the Taro cocktail which was a mix of mango juice, plum wine and soju, and my guest had the Mei cocktail which had sake. Both were dangerously drinkable! We ordered heaps fo sushi including the Balham Roll (a plate of salmon & avocado rolls), the Spider Roll (soft shell crab rolls), cucumber make, tuna nigiri and egg nigiri, plus various sides. The food came very quickly, was freshly made, and had really fresh flavours. My favourite was the Balham roll with delicious and clear flavour and textures from the salmon and avocado.
Highly recommend a visit to Taro, it is very good sushi at...
Read moreI've been to Taro 3 times. The first, any deficiency in quality of the food was balanced by the quantity (I think we had bento). The second, we waited for about 15-20 mins at the table and eventually left because nobody seemed to want to take our order, despite there being staff busily engaged in folding napkins.
Last night I went with my daughter. I had chicken katsu, which was adequate, if not exactly inspired. My daughter, and it is on the basis of her meal that I write this review, ordered vegetarian ramen. What arrived was a bowl of liquid with a few chunks of broccoli, carrot and a lot of beansprouts. There were a few stray noodles lurking at the bottom of the bowl. The broth was so tasteless that she had to douse it in soy sauce, whereupon it tasted of diluted soy sauce. There was no protein whatsoever. There were none of the usual things you'd find in veggie ramen - no mushrooms, tofu, egg. It was pathetic, in short, and we had to find alternative source of food when we left. We won't...
Read moreI have been a lover of taro for many years and was excited to try this new branch. Sadly, it does not meet the high standards of the others. The food was average, with the sashimi being of a disappointingly low quality and not fresh (can tell from the mushy textures, colour and taste) they were also not cut professionally like a sushi chef would, see pictures. The sushi’s tasted good and we also had a spicy teriyaki chicken dish was normal. I was disappointed the new branch was not as good but the prices were same as the others. The service was friendly but half asleep and the restaurant had 3 other tables, it was 5pm the least busy time.. took a while to get servers attention and orders etc Still an okay peace to eat for an easy lunch maybe but if you’re going for sushi and sashimi I would go...
