I've been to Franco Manca years ago in London, and had a great experience. I was looking forward to it, when I heard they were opening a new location in Plymouth. However, I was very disappointed on my visit last week. I would still visit again and give it another go. Atmosphere: Casual, standardized chain restaurant vibes. I will admit that I do prefer the home-y atmosphere of Knead (a local sourdough pizza joint a stroll away) in comparison. It's unfortunate because the Franco Manca I had gone to in London had a feel much closer to Knead. Service: It took the server 30min to even ask us for drinks. The restaurant wasn't very busy, but I understand that it may have been understaffed. It also took more than 45min to get our food. I observed that a large party (of 8) which had arrived after us (also a group of 8), was served their food first. Food: - Burrata with artichokes (7 out of 10): Burrata is never a bad choice! However, it could probably use more than two small pieces of artichokes, and two small pieces of bread. - Meat special pizza (7 out of 10): if I remember correctly, it is bresaola on top. This was a special, and not on the regular menu. The pizza was unceremoniously burnt in certain areas, and the bottom was overdone. It was still pretty good though. My coworker's pizza was even more burnt, so he ate just the middle of the pizza and discarded the edges.

Pretty below par meal out this evening at franco manca Plymouth. I ordered the meat special, expecting something ‘special’… see the photo, I would hope that anyone would agree this is pretty sub standard for a £14.25 pizza… I count 6 small and thin slices of meat, I laughed when I got served it. Soggy in the middle. Dough tasted good, and tasted fresh, so the actual pizza was up to scratch and tasty. Very poor service. I think this specific restaurant is understaffed, there are not enough people waiting tables. This is our second visit within a few months in between and we had the exact same experience of inattentive service to the point - although we wanted desert - we flagged someone down and got the bill instead. Waiters asking if you’d like another drink after seeing an empty glass should be a given. The optional service charge was comical after our experience, and of course we chose to remove it. I really enjoy the no label lager here, it is really good. The vibe, atmosphere and restaurant as a whole is nice. Someone also needs to raise the height of the two mirrors in the men’s bathroom, I enjoy being able to see my face rather than my crotch! 😆

A Truly Outstanding Pizza Experience From the moment I walked in, the ambiance was welcoming, and the staff demonstrated the highest level of professionalism and courtesy. The highlight of the experience was undoubtedly the pizza – a true masterpiece of Italian culinary tradition. The sourdough base was perfectly crafted, with just the right balance of crispiness and chew, topped with high-quality, flavorful ingredients that brought every bite to life. What truly made the experience memorable, however, was the incredible service and the warm hospitality extended by the team. Special recognition must go to Head Chef MARY, whose talent and passion for authentic Italian cuisine clearly shine through the pizza I had. Service was prompt, and I never felt like I was waiting. The attention to detail, from the kitchen to the table, was impeccable. This place is a gem, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who appreciates top-tier pizza and outstanding service. A big thank you to Chef MARY and the entire team – I will certainly be returning!

I’ve been a loyal customer of Franco Manca in Plymouth, but my experience today has left me extremely disappointed. Everything was fine during lunch with my friends until I tried to ask Mr Mirik, who appears to be the manager, for the bill. As he walked past my table, I politely asked for the bill, but instead of responding professionally, he rudely raised his finger at me, said, “Excuse me for a moment,” and continued walking without even looking at me. I found this gesture disrespectful and completely inappropriate, especially from someone in a managerial role. I approached another member of staff, who apologised for the situation, which I appreciated. However, five minutes later, Mr Mirik returned to our table in an abrupt and dismissive manner, asking, “What can I do for you?” I explained that I had requested the bill earlier and found his gesture of pointing a finger and ignoring me to be extremely rude. Rather than apologising or attempting to resolve the issue professionally, he became defensive and claimed the restaurant was short staff, dismissing my concerns with a patronising attitude.

Mr Mirik’s behaviour was far from acceptable and is certainly not what one would expect from someone in a leadership position. He refused to apologise and even seemed proud of the fact that there was no one above him to escalate my complaint to. Such conduct reflects poorly on both him and the Franco Manca brand.

I strongly encourage senior management to review the behaviour and suitability of individuals like Mr Mirik in managerial roles. Managers should lead by example, ensuring operations run smoothly and customers are treated with respect and care. Sadly, this experience has left me deeply disappointed and reluctant to return to Franco Manca, which was previously my favourite pizza...
