My recent visit to Smoke and Mirrors in Old Portsmouth was an experience to remember. The restaurant’s decor, though dark, exudes a sumptuous and cosy ambiance, with a palpable sense of decadence. The commissioned artworks and subtle nods to the rich history of the area add a unique and charming touch to the overall atmosphere.

We were a party of seven, having booked in advance, and our hosts ensured we were well taken care of from the moment we arrived. The service was impeccable, making us feel welcomed and attended to throughout our meal.

The seasonal selection of dishes did not disappoint. Our group opted for a variety of different dishes, and impressively, everything arrived simultaneously. Each meal was beautifully presented and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

I personally chose the burrata salad to start, followed by the duo of lamb. The lamb croquette was particularly outstanding, offering a burst of flavor that was simply out of this world. For dessert, I indulged in the baked cheesecake, which was the perfect end to a delightful meal.

Took my partner to Smoke & Mirrors for his 40th birthday, and honestly, I’m not even sure where to start — it was that good.

Right from the moment we walked in, we were made to feel so welcome. Our server greeted us with such warmth that any nerves about trying a new place just melted away. A few minutes in, she came over to take our drink order, and while that’s totally normal, what stood out was how well she knew the menu. Her recommendations for both drinks and food were spot on — super honest and clearly based on real knowledge and experience, which felt really refreshing.

We had a starter, main, and dessert, and every single dish was incredible. You could taste the passion and effort that went into every bite. Nothing felt rushed or overdone — just really well-cooked, thoughtful food that made the night feel special.

You can really tell there’s a lot of love behind this place. If you’re thinking about trying somewhere new, I’d say go for it — Smoke & Mirrors is absolutely worth it.

The service is wonderful. Efficient and friendly without being overbearing and the ambiance is lovely as well.
