Situated in Broad Street , Old Portsmouth, this cafe is one of the foodie gems in the area. The cafe is open 7 days from 8am -4pm , serving breakfast until 11-45 when the lunchtime menu takes over. They have a variety of sumptuous cakes and a variety of teas and coffees They have a small outside area, next to the historic Round Tower, where you can relax, take in sea air, watch the ferries to France and more locally to Fishbourne by car ferry or the catamaran service to Ryde and all the recreational craft associated with busy harbour community. If you're coming from Portsmouth Harbour Station or the Hard bus Interchange, it is a few minutes' walk via Gunwharf Quays , just make your way past IOW car ferry terminal and follow the footpath around the marina and turn right past the exhibitors shops and head for the Round Tower

Downright excellent. We first learnt of the canteen by smelling it's delicious aromas while walking on the town wall. The next day we returned for breakfast. The staff were acknowledging, polite, welcoming from the start, even as we'd joined a queue to be seated. We were lucky to get a lovely seat in a little semi-outdoor space with a sea-spray soaked window. I've got a number of food intolerances which the staff readily accommodated by allowing and off menu order. The salmon was superb. The ham is possibly the best I've *ever* had. The coffee was great. Everyone of the the staff we interacted with were lovely, and all interactions I heard with any other customers were also great. I think they should be proud of the culture they've built there, and the food they serve!

The atmosphere is nice and my friends enjoyed their meals. However my breakfast was inedible. I normally get pancakes or waffles with bacon and maple syrup for breakfast so I know what to expect. Their version of maple bacon waffle was drowned in so much cheap faux maple syrup that I couldn’t taste anything else. This was all hidden under a mound of crushed candied pecans which tasted slightly like sawdust but added a nice crunch. I managed 2 bites before giving up and resorting to toast. I assumed white bread was the standard for breakfast so was a bit surprised to be offered 2 slices of granary bread. The staff weren’t very gracious when I asked for an alternative but they did provide me with my desired bread. Would definitely recommend this cafe but not the maple bacon waffle. Perhaps they could offer the maple syrup in a separate jar?

Argyle on tour. Strolling around the waterfront I stumbled upon this delightful cafe/restaurant. Built within the stone walls of the main sea retaining structure it is a hidden gem. The seating is pretty unimaginative on the entrance side but when you go inside it's magical and the little balcony area right beside the sea is spectacular....watch out for the spray from the closely passing ferries !! Lovely service, my sandwich and beer were excellent and its truly an exhilarating fascinating place to sit, with spectacular views across the Solent to Ryde and ferries passing every half hour. I just think they should change the name "The Canteen" because it doesn't do it justice. Loved it !

Lovely cafe restaurant in the old walls of Portsmouth old town seaside. Beautifully restored building. Food well presented and gorgeous with generous portions. We had granola with raspberries, sourdough toast (2 gigantic slices) and poached eggs on sourdough toast with americano coffees. Staff smiley and friendly. We were offered seats outside in a cute courtyard with estuary views but the waiter said it could be a bit chilly - lovely that they told us that. We sat inside and it was great. Cakes, pastries, sausage rolls and pasties all looked lovely, as did the breakfasts brought out to other customers. Great vibe - definitely recommend it. I
