I just hung up with the individual that answers the phone for Alaska Cake studio with an unremarkable response from her (if she has a higher position than receptionist she didn't divulge). The process of ordering from this bakery was a definite disappointment, but the cake was the biggest failure. Initially - the same call-taker was polite, but wasn't transparent that the cakes are made in Anchorage not in Wasilla fresh. In my case I ordered the 6" Champagne Celebration Cake which is described a "buttery-yellow cake gets its flavor and color when the champagne is incorporated into the batter as the liquid to bind all the premium ingredients together." It's tiny and its cost was $34. I explained it to be a birthday cake and no mention from her that this particular cake probably doesn't fit that occasion unless you want a highly-champagne tasting cake. I also asked for chocolate icing and my wife's name and "Happy Birthday" with a heart on it. For the chocolate icing and written salutation, the price went from $34 to $63.04. And it was an extra 48 hours to prepare they noted. when the time came it was late in arriving to Wasilla which I didn't complain about (they called me by my request). When we ate the cake last night it was - frankly awful. We just tossed it in the garbage today unfortunately after each adult family member admittedly couldn't consume it. My advice: Be honest on process and where your cakes are baked and that they're driven out to the Valley; be helpful when someone calls to order a cake and listen to what the cake is for; offer a discount or free cake when this happens (I probably would have declined but good businesses to do that); and lower your prices - the current price point is outrageous for that cake with minimal deviations I requested, and with its lackluster taste.

Is it so very unfortunate to write this poor review on the cake I received as a gift, as I have enjoyed many delicious desserts here with my kids! My fiancé, ordered a custom chocolate cake with a mushroom picture on top of it. The cake was beautiful. (Side note, I bake custom cakes as well for birthdays. But this year I wanted a professional cake as a gift instead of crafting my own.) The chocolate cake was either so over cooked or freezer burnt that it had very little flavor. It seemed as if it was drenched in simple syrup to cover up the fact it was incredibly dry and crumbly and had so little flavor. The chocolate ganache filling was also very skimpy and terribly uneven. I feel horrible writing this, as I don’t want to tarnish this studio’s reputation but seeing other customers similar reviews and this is STILL a prevalent issue, I decided to voice my experience as well. For how expensive these cakes are, you’d figure they would care to not cut corners. It is extremely upsetting to know that these cakes are on the higher price end in anchorage and it is a common issue with the VERY basic recipe and preparation of a cake. Please do not serve overcooked or freezer burnt cakes. Please do not cover up a recipe mistake or baking mistake with simple syrup. Please actually put the filling people pay for in the cake properly.

I ordered a dozen cupcakes with a bee theme. I was told they could add a bee topper for 1.50. Which brought the honey infusion cupcake to 6.00 each. I wouldn't have minded paying 72$ a dozen for beautiful cupcakes, but what I got was very basic cupcakes with some sanding sugar and tiny sugar bees. When I called to express my disappointment, I was told a manager wasn't present but would call me later. It's been a week, and I haven't heard anything. I stopped at the Babycakes Food Truck the next day and got some beautifully decorated, delicious cupcakes. 5.50$ each and 6 for 31$. This was the third time at Alaska Cakes Bakery, with both previous times being bad employee experiences. Never returning, you need to make better products, train your employees better, and follow through with customer issues.

Edit: Response to below. Per the employee- understandable, things happen as I originally stated. Per the food- I had already left the building at the time of consumption. Even if you had made it right the quality of the food and flavor is what reviews are based off of. If i have to get a refund from the food I ordered because it was so offputting that doesnt warrant a better review. I will raise my review to 3 stars and attempt to try it again, but i am just trying to be honest with my experience.

Original: I rarely do reviews but I feel like one was really needed. First, when my friend and I arrived in the store there was no one there. No notes or anything. After about 5 or so minutes of reviewing the deserts someone approaches and says sorry, okay its fine. Whatever, things happen. But then my friend tells her very clearly what she would like (just two of one type of item) and i tell her id like (one of a different type) and then my friend walks to the register while the employee prepares it. I stay by the glass so i see her grabbing the wrong item for my friend and so i clarify it for her. I glance away and go over to the register and then notice she grabbed the wrong item for me so then i go show her the one i td her originally again. It wasnt a horrible experience just weird and repetitive. Maybe she was really tired or something i dont know, but the cookie sandwich i ordered was incredibly hard and the chocolate little tart thing tasted like butter with random hard chocolates. It was a good texture but not in that quantity and the random hard peices thrw me off. I couldnt finsh either. Very...
