Snow City Cafe is a great an popular breakfast spot in downtown anchorage. It's very busy and you should definitely get on the wait list online before showing up to reserve your spot so you don't have to wait their for 45 minutes or longer. You can check your place on the list online and head there when you're close. (Plus you'll get a text when your table is ready.) That's what we did and didn't have to wait at all once we were notified and arrived at the restaurant.
If you do find yourself waiting there for a table, fear not, they offer coffee to people waiting to be seated which is fantastic. There are also games and sidewalk chalk to keep you busy.
It's a fun spot with plenty to choose from for every diet. Vegetarian and gluten free items are labeled on the menu so you'll feel like a first class citizen if you have one of those diets.
They're also very flexible – Everytime my wife asked a question that began with "can you..." the answer was always "yes."
The drip coffee could have been stronger for my tastes...definitely a few steps above the "browned water" some places server, but I like a coffee that is so bold it slaps me in the face at the first sip. (I'm sure our server would have slapped me had I asked...she was VERY accommodating.)
I had the 2 egg breakfast with a biscuit as my side. They also offer Beyond Sausage as an option for meat-free folks. The hashbrowns were among the most attractive I've seen, cooked all the way through albeit a little bit too oily on the inside. They cook their biscuits on the grill after baking – I prefer them just baked as they get a little too dense and greasy when you add the grill step.
My wife really loved the veggie benedict she got. And we felt like we kept getting free upgrades...I had egg whites with my breakfast and they didn't charge us the printed charge for that. My wife ordered just half a benedict (Our server said they could "halve" anything which is a great option to have) - They brought her a full serving and only charged for the half. They also didn't charge for the biscuit upgrade as my bread option.
My wife also really liked her decaf espresso and was happy to have a coffee drink suitable to her preferences.
I wish they jams they brought with the biscuit didn't have sugar as the first ingredient...a nice house-made jam, or selection of jams beyond the one packet they brought (and maybe something just fruit based) would have been better.
The pancakes we saw at another table looked out of control (huge and the person eating it confirmed they were delicious.)
I'd give 4 stars to the food with 5 for the overall experience, attention to detail and general...
Read moreWe took out family of 6 to get brunch as soon as we left the airport after a day and night of long flights. I was happy to be able to reserve a table online ahead of time so it was ready within a couple of minutes of us arriving. The restaurant was busy and bustling, but this didn't affect our service at all.
The menu had many choices that sounded tempting. I ordered the burrito smother in ranchero sauce. It had a bite of spice, which was a welcome surprise. Huge and flavorful. They also had a collection of hot sauces to try. I ordered a Kaladi latte to go and I enjoyed it very much. My partner ordered the biscuits and gravy, eggs, and added hash browns. These were really very good! We both were surprised at how flavorful the dish was. Biscuits and gravy is very hot or miss at most places, and this was definitely a big hit. The hash browns also had a great taste and we're cooked well. He ordered a latte and enjoyed it. I stole a sip and agreed that it was quite tasty.
My oldest ordered the half combo. They had a half of the meatloaf sandwich, the soup of the day which was some sort of white bean chicken chili, and the salad. It was a lot of food. The sandwich was large, even as a half. Their favorite part was the soup. They said they would eat a whole bowl of that. We took the salad home and the only complaint was the ranch was very meh. I'd order a different dressing. They had an Italian soda as well, which they found to be mild flavored but they enjoyed it.
My oldest son had trouble choosing what to eat. We were all so tired, and probably grumpy from our overnight layover, and I can't tell you how kind and understanding our server was. They could see he was struggling and they made sure be didn't feel rushed or pressured. He settled on the BLT and pasta salad. He loved them both. He was especially impressed with the pasta salad, which was herby and not the mayo based type. My other child tasted it and they liked it too. He also ordered an Italian soda, the special of the month, and like it.
My younger two had kids meals. One ordered the silver dollar pancakes and added sausage. These pancakes were bigger than expected and he couldn't finish them. He enjoyed his meal, and devoured the sausage. The other ordered the kids large pancake, sausage, and an egg. It covered the whole plate! His only issue is the sausage and egg were placed on top of the pancake since the plate was full. Lots of people, kids especially, don't like their food touching in that way, so a second or divided plate would be helpful. But he did like his food.
I loved the atmosphere here. It was diverse, and clearly very inclusive. I felt safe...
Read moreThis is a cutely decorated cafe with paper lanterns and stars hanging from the ceiling to distract you from seeing the industrial ceiling that comes with most modern buildings 👍. We checked in with the hostess and were told that there was going to be a 30 minute wait. No biggie, there was stuff to see nearby to keep us busy. We got seated, menus, etc. Was greeted by an extremely friendly guy, and I apologize, I don’t remember his name.(beard and glasses) We ordered the Cluck Norris omelet to share, which is supposed to come with chicken sausage and spinach, onions and cheese. They divided it onto separate plates which is always appreciated. My half of the omelet which was pretty much a scramble with cheese on top, which is fine, had zero spinach and only one piece of sausage. The hash browns were pretty good, not greasy, if you like them, no other choice. The jelly packet they gave us was supposed to be strawberry jam and it was neon pink and had a strange taste. I don’t get all the hype for this place, THE FOOD IS NOT SO GOOD. What ever, we’ll never go back. But they’ll do just fine with all the over hyped up reviews that they are getting from delusional patrons who can’t keep raving about them. The best to Snow City Cafe. The owner responded to my review stating that they make their own freezer jam which gives it a fresher taste and different color. I have made plenty of jams and jellies in my life and the best way to preserve them is by putting it in jars. Now I understand why they didn’t put any filling in my Cluck Norris “ omelette “ because they spend all their time putting their “homemade “ jam into 1”x 2”” by 1/2” tall plastic containers that have pull back foil tops sealing the jam. Makes sense now. Just like all the other restaurants that get their jam out of a box delivered from...
