Stan & Joe's Saloon — Restaurant in Annapolis

Last night, I went to Stan and Joe’s in Annapolis and experienced what I can only describe as blatant racial discrimination. As someone who doesn’t typically call out racism lightly, I feel compelled to share my experience.

I’ve been a regular at this establishment for months, often paying with Apple Pay without issue. However, last night, I was told by a bartender named Eryn (apologies if I’ve misspelled her name) that I could not use Apple Pay. When I explained that I’ve used it multiple times before, she dismissed me and called me a “fat Black lie.” She went on to say that I was lucky to have been allowed in and that I would never be welcome back.

Shortly after, security was called, and they joined in using racial slurs and intimidating behavior. Even other staff joined in, accusing me of being the type of person who comes to bars for free drinks—an outright lie. For nearly six months, I’ve been coming to this bar to enjoy karaoke nights without any prior issues.

To make matters worse, despite this unwarranted hostility, they let me leave without paying my tab. This wasn’t about intoxication or disruptive behavior—I had one drink and was completely sober. The entire incident felt like it stemmed from prejudice and the way I looked that night.

If you’re Black or value a welcoming and inclusive environment, I’d advise staying away from Stan and Joe’s. What happened last night was unacceptable, and I can only hope that Eryn and the staff involved reflect on their actions and do better...

NOT NON-US CITIZEN FRIENDLYIts a Stan and NO from me. Another foreigner with a bad experience - having read other reviews it is clearly a pattern at this establishment. Last night my husband who is from the UK was denied service here in a very, very rude - borderline xenophobic manner. He is a green card holder aka a LEGAL US permanent resident who has a UK driving license. He is also 6’2 with a full beard and clearly presenting as well over 30. The manager was hostile once he saw the foreign documentation my husband and our two visiting friends from the UK presented and refused to serve us. While I understand having a policy, there is NO need to be so downright nasty to tourists and to non-US Citizens. After being basically thrown out, we walked next door to Rams Head Tavern where the lovely bartender and servers were welcoming, friendly, and polite. If you are from a foreign country (even if you are legally allowed to be living in the US) avoid Stan and Joes...

I recently had lunch with a friend who had only heard about the legend that IS Stan & Joe’s, but hadn’t been. Casey was behind the bar and couldn’t have been more welcoming, and was full of helpful information. The menu is extensive, and we were hungry! We were advised Betty’s Chicken Salad was a winner, and indeed it was..Betty knows! ‘Stogies’ were on the menu, which are cheesesteak stuffed egg rolls that are deep fried and cut in half 🤤 Hell yeah! I knew Casey wouldn’t steer us wrong! My lunch mate chose a frosty craft brew and I opted for a Bloody Mary made with George’s, and it was just what the Dr ordered! That, together with a friendly bunch of patrons who all seem to greet one another, this was the perfect way to spend a hump-day lunch. Don’t forget the free parking lot adjacent to S & J’s!
