I’m going to try to keep this review short and sweet. Nestled in the heart of midtown, South City Kitchen was a welcome surprise that provided an upscale twist to traditional southern comfort food. Our waiter was attentive, friendly and provided impeccable service. He was ready and willing to explain all food options which made menu selection painless. The restaurant provided a very close nit feel that made it easy to socialize with others. Since this was brunch with the girls, Mimosas and Peach Bellinis were first up on the ordering list. I mean we are in Georgia, right?! 😉
The food! Our meal started with sweet biscuits and cornbread muffins with freshly made apple preserves and butter. Amazing! Next we selected Fried Green Tomatoes made with goat cheese and red pepper coulis. I must admit, I was a little skeptical at first, however the balance between the creamy goat cheese and the tartness of the tomato was beyond words. By far I would say it lived up to its hype and was a favorite of the table. We also tried the Brussels with crispy bacon which was also a hit.
Two of us ordered the Springer Mountain Farms Fried Chicken which was paired with fresh collard greens, mashed red potatoes in a honey thyme jus. The chicken can only be described as crispy, succulent and fried to perfection. We were told that the chicken is soaked in buttermilk for three days prior to cooking which makes the chicken moist and tender. As a pescatarian, I’m generally not big on chicken BUT if you are going to cheat, it’s a meal worth the cheat😂👏🏼👏🏼.
The Carolina Trout was a great option paired with pears, turnips, Swiss chard and pear vinaigrette. Perfect choice. What is not on the menu is that under the fish were small grilled mushrooms that were tender, sweet and the perfect complement to this dish.
And last but not least, a traditional southern favorite, Shrimp and Hen Mill Grits paired with Tasso ham and a smoked tomato poblano gravy. You can never go wrong with shrimp and grits…..enough said.
Whether you come for brunch with friends or consider this a date night option, you will not be disappointed. Midtown is one of my favorite areas in Atlanta and South City Kitchen is now one of my new loves. Definitely a must visit!! I guess I forgot about short and sweet, 😝. ...
Read moreMy guest & I arrived just a few minutes early for our 10:30 reservation. When we walked in the hostess and what seemed to be a floor manager were having a conversation with another guest of the restaurant. We waited, waited and waited. Neither the hostess or the manager acknowledged our presence.
Eventually one the servers came over and asked if we had been helped, and she invited us to be seated upstairs.
We were seated and in just a short while our server Deshe' came over and offered beverages and a quick tour of the menu. Our beverages were served fairly quickly as was the fried green tomatoes that we ordered as an appetizer. I ordered shrimp & grits and my guest ordered chicken and waffles.
After a reasonable time our entrees were brought by the floor manager that failed to greet us at the door.
We exchanged pleasantries and continued to talk for a little more than a minute. Before he left our table I mentioned the lack of attention when we arrived. He said that he saw us and knew that we were there and he went to say that he acknowledged our presence. Neither my guest or I saw that acknowledgement.
We both enjoyed our meals.
Both my guest and I found it a bit surprising that a restaurant that paid so much attention to detail (table linen that looked freshly starched with no fold creases, heavy flatware and servers that were very attentive) did not pay enough attention to the diners coming through the door.
It could have been the fact that the guest the floor manager and the hostess were talking to was waiting for a big party and they were not sure of the time or the count and because there were only two of us we did not require a speedy...
Read moreQuaintness factor a plus for this eatery located in heart of Atlanta's midtown....modern decor with open kitchen in a renovated old world bungelow. Kitchen turns out palate pleasing seasonally-inspired dishes as well as modern takes on many southern favorites. Service was prompt and David our waiter did an excellent job on recommendations for my husband's and my differing palates. We shared several items for a late night, small plates dinner. Beautifully plated dishes dressed with a variety of well-paired inhouse fresh, pickled,or grilled veggies. You will not be disappointed with any of these starters--She crab soup, peach salad, lump crab cake, fried green tomatoes, Yummy!! Although the lamb ribs were quite tasty, they were too sweet for my palate and needing an additional touch of finishing salt for balance and to make the savory side of this dish pop; really nice outer chewy, sweet glaze and tender ribmeat insides, Mmmm. Our main course of porkchop although very good tasting and juicy was not as appealing in texture. Unsure if this was affected by the brining or cooking processes that evening, but if you enjoy pork as your preferred white meat, then I would say give it a try since sauce and veg relish served on this plate is very complementary to the chop. For drinks beyond hydration.....well if you're this close to whiskey country you'd best try their signature old fashion--delish! Appreciated the table service and pairings by waiter David very much! as well as tableside visits from both sous-chef David G. and the manager. We'll definitely be back to this location. Thanks for a great late...
