I am completely hooked on these tacos. Although they are not authentic, they are delicious & a bomb full of flavor! I've gone 3 times in less than a week and 2/3 times were on the same day less than an hour apart. Don't take my word for it! You must try on your own.
If this is too long to read-- I recommend you must try the slow roasted angus brisket, Nashville hot tofu, grilled salmon, and spicy tikka chicken.
Interior is pretty basic with seats lining the outer perimeter of the dining area. Most of the seating are long, picnic-style high top tables where multiple different parties can seat themselves. This is self serve and self seat. You order and pay at the front and they'll call your name when your order is ready.
Visit 1 I tried 3 tacos in the following order: -Slow roasted angus brisket $5.50 Barbacoa style, red Chile mayo, avocado relish, queso blanco, micro cilantro, comte encrusted flour tortilla. I was completely mind blown. This is surely what a foodgasm is like, haha! The fresh taste of the avocado relish and the tender, juicy angus brisket-- WOW. My taste buds and brain could not comprehend. The comte encrusted flour perfectly wraps all of the ingredients in together. Beware-- it's messy but so worth it. Picnic chicken $3.95 Rotisserie chicken, avocado crema, warm honey-Dijon mustard potato salad, crispy chicken skin, cilantro, on flour tortilla. Compared to the above, this taco was very underwhelming. I felt like the chicken was dry and the overall flavor was lacking and bland. Spicy tikka chicken $4.60 Crisp tenders, spicy tikka sauce, buttered cilantro basmati rice, raita crema, Thai basil, flour tortilla. If you order this as is, they'll give you the spicy tikka sauce, which they explained to me as being about 9/10 on the spice level. You can get it as mild, which will be about 4/10. I tried both and the spicy may have a kick but tastes much better than the mild ! the sauce reminded me of Thai curry. You can choose to get the sauce on the side as well. The chicken was so crispy and the basmati rice was perfectly cooked.
Visit 2-3: Nashville hot tofu $3.75 My personal fav Crispy tofu, Napa slaw, ranch crema, house bribed pickles, flour tortilla. The tofu is thinly battered and perfectly fried. The outer crispness and inner texture of the tofu makes you forget that it's tofu! The taste of the ranch crema resembles tartar sauce and the tanginess of the pickles makes such a great combination with the fried tofu! The slaw adds great texture as well ! Grilled salmon $5.50 Napa slaw, citrus lime crema, pickled Fresnos, roasted corn pico, avocado crema, micro cilantro, hibiscus corn tortilla. My sister ordered this one but I had a taste and I thought it was really good ! I think the Napa slaw and avocado crema really does wonders in these tacos. I'm personally not a fan of corn tortillas but thought the added hibiscus made it real different ! I had the angus brisket again but this visit was pretty salty. So, I guess it differs by day and how/who cooks it !
I tried the margarita with sugar and even the regular/small was a good size for me. It had a good amount of alcohol and of course, perfect to drink with tacos any day.
My expectations were high on the red velvet cake since it's in the name of the establishment-- unfortunately, I was disappointed. You can tell it's definitely homemade but It didn't taste like red velvet nor cream cheese. It was super moist and tasted really cakey, if that makes any sense.
I'm going to be back and back again because I have my favorite tacos already. I may be daring and try the rest of...
Read moreI go to velvet taco all the time in Dallas,Texas. I found out there was one in ATL so when I came home for the holidays I wanted to give it a try. Also, my mother has never been to velvet taco so I wanted her to try it. We were out shopping all day and wanted something that would really hit the spot. Despite being told to go to the Howell Mill location, I came to this particular location because it was closer to Lenox.
We ordered 12 tacos total, 2 margs, the elote corn, the crisp tots served with a fried egg, and a kids chicken tender meal. We spent $116 and left a 25% tip. The young lady at the register was absolutely wonderful, which is more than what I can say for the kitchen staff. The tacos were pretty good (not a good as in Texas) but the service from the kitchen staff was mediocre at best. My mother and I order the Kobe bacon burger taco and requested it to be well done. When we got them, we noticed that they were medium rare, so we requested a remake. They remade the bacon burger tacos only to not add bacon to one of them. My mom was hungry so she that it was okay because she didn’t need the bacon anyway. My boyfriend ordered the crisp tots served with a fried egg ams requested the egg to be fried over hard as he absolutely does not like a runny egg. He gets the tots and the egg is runny. I take it back to the kitchen, and the guy says “we’ll make you another egg because it looks like you have started eating the tots already.” That was an unacceptable response as I was expecting a complete remake as some of the tots had the runny egg on it, however he insisted that that would not happen. I took the runny egg off the tots, gave him the egg back, gave back about 5 tots that had the runny egg on it, and kept the rest. They remade the egg, brought it out and it was burnt. My mom went back up there and said “this is my first time here we spent $116 here why are you treating us like this?” They proceeded to make another fried egg (mind you this is without a remake of the tots). One the guys (who was filled with pure attitude and spice), brought 2 fried eggs over and said here choose one. At that point we were over it and to leave. We did not even place out to go orders due to the lack of care and concern about the dissatisfaction of how the kitchen staff responded to a order mess up.
In conclusion, I will stick with going while I’m in a Dallas and when I come home to visits family I will go to the Howell mill location. All in all, the food was good was the kitchen staff needs to get...
Read moreYesterday was my first (and sadly last) time visiting this establishment. I went in with a friend whose coworkers had suggested she try it. It was roughly about 410pm EST and the place was empty except for a gentleman who was in line in front of us. No one greeted us even though there were 4 people behind the counter.
The woman taking orders (and everyone else) completely ignored us. Even after the person who was ahead of us had gotten his good and left. She kept her back to us chopping lettuce. My friend and I just stood at the counter looking from each other to the people behind the counter for a few minutes wondering if anyone was going to take our order. They all turned around at one point or another and made eye contact with us; no one said “we’ll be right with you” or anything. The woman chopping the lettuce eventually called out to a guy with short braids wearing a black cap to take our order. He started groaning like we were irritating him. My friend says “look, we can leave if you don’t want to serve us. We were about to leave anyway because no one has even acknowledged our presence since we’ve been here”. He says “nah, it’s cool. What are you getting?”
She ordered her food and also told them what I wanted. He asked “is that it? I thought y’all were gonna order more food than that”. She told him no, that it was our first time there and we just wanted to try it.
We ordered the food to go because we didn’t feel welcome to stay. When we got to the car, we saw they had put our food in the same container even though she made clear that she was ordering for two. I went back inside to ask for another container only to be ignored again. I saw some containers stacked on the counter on a shelf of some sort and grabbed one.
The guy with the short braids approached and said “oh, you want to order something else?”. I said “no, I just need your corporate number”. He said he didn’t know it and after fiddling with his phone for a bit, went to the back. I asked a woman who was near the back wall of she knew the number; she said “no, I don’t know it” and went back to what she was doing. Another guy (the one who packed our food with no gloves on) came out of the back and she told him I had asked for their corporate number. He went to the company website and shows me that there’s no number listed, just a review section. While he’s showing me, I see dirt under his neatly trimmed nails. This man handled our food! I will not...
