This is the first time we've been to a Groucho's so we didn't know what to expect. The place is very clean and spacious, which sometimes makes the sound echo. Hard surfaces cause sound to echo in the room. The menu has a large variety of hot sandwiches, deli cold cut stuff and salads and desserts. We ordered the Apollo Dipper with formula 45 (which is this thousand island mixed sauce concoction which happened to be the best part of the meal), and a rueben variation. The Apollo Dipper was essentially a basic sub roll (thankfully soft and like a Cuban bread without the crust) filled with turkey and ham and topped with Swiss. It was pretty unimpressive on its own but with the formula 45 it really tasted great. The chips that came with the meal were also surprisingly bland but were saved with the addition of the sauce. The Rueben was ok, but the roast beef was overly peppered/seasoned, and they topped it with a large amount of yellow mustard which made it taste very powerful. Our waitress was attentive and nice, and the service was good. Price wise, you can expect to pay around 8 dollars for most sandwiches, but keep in mind they do charge you for stuff like extra sauces and even has a 25 cent surcharge for water (no free water here). I would probably come back to try more of their menu since they have a large...
Read moreI enjoyed my meal here, and I must compliment their staff member on how things were handled when a mistake was made. I had asked for additional veggies on my sandwich, and they were missing from the order. So, I asked for them on the side, and the employee working the counter was gracious and immediately corrected the situation. She was polite and friendly when taking my order, and I also saw her checking on people in the dining area to see if they were enjoying their meals and if they needed anything. Expect a higher price point than you would find at some other chain restaurant shops in the area, but you get what you pay for. The service was superior, and the quality of the food was as well. I had a vegetarian sandwich, and the vegetables all were fresh, the chips were some of the best I have had, the iced tea had a good flavor, and the blondie I had for dessert tasted freshly-baked that day, which is more than I can say for some of the coffee shops in the area. The dining area was clean and well-maintained. I can recommend this restaurant, and think it would be a pleasant place for families to dine, with a wide selection of sandwiches. Bravo to good management! If you look at some of the other comments, it is evident they are paying attention to their quality of service, presentation, and...
Read moreGroucho’s is a regional chain which began business in Columbia, SC by Groucho Miller in 1941. I’m sure it’s gone through many changes since. We were there for lunch yesterday, Saturday. The wait staff was small but attentive and efficient. My wife and I ordered a pastrami sandwich with potato soup and the mushroom and cheese wrap. Our friends ordered the international turkey sandwich and the Reuben sandwich. Our friends enjoyed their sandwiches. My wife said her wrap was mostly cheese, a few mushrooms with little flavor. My pastrami was ok. Bland with not much mustard; smallish rye bread and portion controlled meat. As I paid the bill at the register the waitress asked me how everything was. I said you’re all attentive and nice. The sandwiches were portion controlled and a true deli stacks the meat high and is usually known for that. She responded I was the fourth person to make that comment. The drinkers may like the fact you can get a beer with your sandwich. Groucho’s also has their own brand of bagged potato chips. Again, just ok; nothing to rave about. Our meal was pleasant. I’d rate this an average deli not to be measured to the standards of Hildebrandt’s or Sunshine Bakery locally or any of the other regional delis. It...
