Paperboy East — Restaurant in Austin

Won’t be back. Food was good, but pales in comparison to other brunch spots in ATX. But what really upset me was the way my group was treated from the very first interactions with the front of house.

We got there about 5 minutes before they opened on Sunday. The kids in my group got confused and thought maybe there were already diners inside, so we opened the door to check. The host said they weren’t open yet, so we went back outside. Then, they locked the door behind us like we’re a bunch of brainless thugs who don’t follow directions. Then, I heard one of the staff loud and clear through the door saying to a coworker, “There’s a sign! Read it!” Not impressed from my first minute of interaction with your staff.

When they opened, we were the very first guests to enter. Not a seat filled in the restaurant. When I told them we had five, they immediately took us to the outside, upstairs patio (weather was 36° and very windy). They didn’t even ask if we were okay to sit outside. Don’t know why we, as the very first diners in this place, couldn’t sit at the end booth inside, where I know full well we could’ve sat five without extra chairs. Insulting that they didn’t even ask—I got the impression they wanted to put us as far away from the other diners as possible. I would love to believe this was a lapse in judgment on their part, but another part of me wonders if they saw the black and Latina folks in my group and wanted us out of sight immediately.

The server who actually took care of our table did an excellent job, as did the couple of runners who brought our plates. But what a blunder on your front of house for putting a bad taste in my mouth from the very first minutes of interaction.

Nut allergy friendly - several dishes do have nuts but the staff are very careful.

An extremely popular local brunch place, we reserved for six a month ahead of time and were able to luckily get indoor seating at 2:30.

The current rotating beer menu is a Pilsner and Hazy IPA from Meanwhile Brewing Co.

We ordered: Chicken and Biscuit (4.5/5): We ordered three servings of this. Two came with two pieces of chicken, and one piece came with three. We commented on this and got three pieces, which I'd consider worth it for the price. The chicken was well flavored and the dish worked together as a whole. Not sure if I'd prefer it over a classic chicken and waffles, but it was a unique twist. Lox Plate: 2/5. Order this if you're on a diet. Four pieces of bread with hummus/feta, some vegetables, and barely any lox. It's tasty and very healthy, but I was expecting much more lox for the price. Steak and Eggs: 1.5/5. Flank steak that is so tough that it got lodged in our friend's throat, it really shouldn't be the price that it is. Classic Breakfast: 4/5 The only thing besides the chicken and biscuit I'd recommend for a real meal. Everything is decent here. Cheddar Hash brown: 3/5. Big, not bad, but pricey for what it is. Ours was a bit soggy like it was unevenly baked.

The saving grace is that service is incredible here. We got a lavender latte at the table instead of a matcha one by accident and got to keep it (+1 for anti-waste). The manager was incredibly kind in coming to resolve a bug on the inKind app (turns out having a large party does some weird things with the mandatory gratuity).

There are two gender neutral bathrooms that actually had a substantial wait when we were there (like, six people in line).

We had breakfast at Paperboy's! We were lucky because, even though we didn't have a reservation and the place was full, the hostess seated us as soon as we arrived. The place is really nice and cozy. The decor is neat, and the dishes ordered by the people next to us look appetizing and neat. As soon as we were seated, a very kind and helpful waitress came to serve us fresh water. There was just enough time for us to look over the menu before she came to take our order. I ordered the "Classic Breakfast" (two eggs, maple sausage, buttered toast and seasonal preserves, and potato wedges), and my wife ordered the "Paperboy Pancake" (maple syrup, brown butter, and sea salt) with eggs and bacon added. We both ordered two American coffees. The coffees were brought to us immediately, but unfortunately, we had to wait quite a while for the food, although, to be honest, considering the number of customers in the restaurant, it is quite understandable. Finally, our breakfasts were served! We immediately noticed a "problem": instead of the scrambled eggs we ordered, we were served two omelets. No matter—we move on! Both dishes were well prepared and delicious. The omelets were "sloppy" and flavorful. The sausage was well seasoned with a good texture. The pancake was unique. We had never had a pancake like it before: very thick and yeasty with a pleasingly grainy texture that absorbed a lot of butter and maple syrup. It reminded me a bit of the texture of a "Torta Paradiso" from Italy. I thought it was excellent and unlike any I had tried before. The service was excellent. The girl at our table was very nice and helpful. She refilled my coffee several times, including once right before we left the restaurant. The bill was...
