Seven Grand — Restaurant in Austin

I'm a whiskey lover, particularly bourbon. But if your choice of whiskey be bourbon, scotch, Irish, Japanese....they have it ALL here! If you like whiskey, you have GOT to check out Seven Grand! It is a whiskey lover's PARADISE! It literally looks like a library, but of different whiskeys. The bartenders have to use a ladder that slides around to climb up and grab a bottle.

I cannot speak to the cocktails, I enjoy my bourbon neat or with a lone ice cube (not a thing wrong with cocktails! This just, is the perfect place to go to try new whiskies as-is). But their selection was stellar. Weller 12 and Full Proof. George T Stagg. Pappy 15, 20, and 23. Elmer T Lee. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof. Four Roses 130th. I could go on. I tried Weller Full Proof and Elmer T Lee ($13 for Elmer T was, in my opinion, beyond reasonable), and wish to God I could find bottles to buy for my collection.

The service was excellent. The bartenders were very courteous, refilled my water without my glass even getting that low, and struck the perfect balance of a little bit of conversation here and there while letting me keep to myself and enjoy my pours.

There are multiple pool tables and places to both sit and stand. There was live music, and not so loud you can't hear yourself think. Easy to find on 7th street. More likely to stand rather than sit from what I gathered, but I did manage to find a seat at the bar to post up at.

I distinctly remember my first time in Seven Grand, my expectations were low and I really had no idea what to expect (other than whiskey, of course). I was carded at the door and then walked into the lobby and was presented with a big wall of Jameson staring me in the face. What a first impression! It smelled like a proper whiskey bar... there's a distinct lovely woodsy smell. And I love it. Because of all of this combined, makes you feel like you're in another world and not anywhere near dirty 6th. ;)

So here's the real reason I keep going back besides the whiskey happy hours (5-8pm!) and the awesome atmosphere... I go back because of my favorite bartender, Brita! She is one of the most amazing people I've met recently. If you need your day brightened, ask for her. She will not only bring a smile to your face, but she's bubbly, thoughtful, attentive AND makes badass cocktails. She's also super cute, so it's hard to miss her.

The vibe & ambiance is great and any time ladders are involved to reach bottles, you know you are in for a treat!

What really sells this place for me though is the bartenders and their whiskey/scotch/bourbon knowledge. They aren't those that BS you and you know they are legit when you know what you are talking about and they speak your language!

I LOVE that they have drippers to cut your drinks when served neat. That says a lot, in my book.

I also love that they have the full range of affordable to lavish, so whatever booze budget you are on, you will find something palatable here.

I enjoy that you can talk shop w/any of the bartenders and they will share their opinions and appreciate yours and make excellent suggestions and recs based on your tastes.
