Buns & Roses serves small versions of chimney cakes that are commonly sold by truck vendors in central europe (kürtőskalács, trdelnik, etc). Great chimney cakes are like crunchy donuts. 😍
Given my fond memories of them, I was extremely excited for Buns & Roses' opening. After many failed attempts to catch them when they were listed to be open, my husband and I paid a visit. I was eager just to eat the pastry alone, but the cost was so prohibitive that it didn't make sense to try it without ice cream.
We tried the banana and Oreo preps. The banana version didn't really have much banana at all going on, but the oreo was reminiscent. The reason for my 2 stars was that half of my pastry was raw (should have realized when mine was 1/3 smaller than my husband's). The half that wasn't raw was pretty lackluster compared to true versions I've eaten. My husband liked the Oreo, but the ice cream on both just doesn't compare to the other ice cream shops a block away.
As an aside, I'm unsure why we were served in cups instead of the holders they gave folks before/after us. 🤷♀️ Made it kind of hard to eat. I'm also surprised Buns & Roses is using a generic machine instead of sourcing better stuff from any of Baltimore's many ice cream options.
Serving time was extremely lengthy since they don't have enough equipment to keep up with demand. We waited a really long time and my pastry was still raw, so it would probably make sense for them to invest in a few more ovens.
Beyond raw dough, nothing was gross and the staff here put a lot of effort into decorating the space, so I hope they are able to make adjustments. Crossing my fingers they dial things in and do well in the future, but not really a place I plan to visit again as it stands.
Edit since the owners think I am confused... Raw dough means wet, squishy dough. You can see in my photo that the pastry was half the size of my husband's (and other customer pics) from the bottom half compressing down. Also, I didn't ask for cups (and would have no idea they even stocked them to ask). The store hadn't run out based on the customer after me getting served in the standard stuff. Thinking on this in retrospect, I assume my half-cooked pastry was the reason they went with a cup instead of a cone. 💁♀️
Best of luck to this place in the future. I'd rather have a business be successful in the...
Read moreAt BCC for the ICNA convention a day early. Tired. Hungry. Saw this place randomly on Google Maps and knew we had to troop it over here before they wrap up for the day. It was so worth it. They let us know about that they usually put marshmallows, we asked if they’re vegan, they’re not, so we asked to leave those out (thank you!).
For a dessert that tastes as good and decadent as this does, it surprisingly also tastes very clean. The vanilla bean ice cream is really spot on, I’m not very into vanilla but it really complemented the chocolate flavors and textures in the Oreo smash.
The chimney cake was also the best we’ve had to date. I admittedly struggled a bit at first when I got down to the chimney cake part. If I didn’t have a 15-20 minute walk back, I’d prefer to just use my hand and have at it. It’s probably the only thing keeping me from giving this a perfect score.
The Mrs. loved the key lime crunch, rating it higher than I would the Oreo smash.
Filling and gave us the energy to troop it further back. Overall definitely...
Read moreWhile visiting my daughter we discovered this new little shop that just opened up. It was fabulous I gave it a five star it was clean, cute, the staff was professional, cheerful, and very informative, found out the owner was in Paris I believe and tried these and said she was going to one day start her own little business. And she did I don't ever need to eat another donut again I have the key lime flavor with no ice cream in it which made it vegan. It was so delicious soft and chewy. And I had a unicorn drink it's hard to tell because my flash didn't work well but it was purple it was beautiful it had a little butterfly on it and I had it with almond milk. I highly recommend the spot everyone should try this and when I looked it up the recipe for these chimney cakes Go way back to the 1700s. They're fabulous and...
