Read moreMy wife and I are big fans of Massimo Bottura's story and vibe. After being lucky enough to visit his signature restaurant in Modena, Italy, we were excited to learn we could have a "Massimo" experience right here in Los Angeles. It's expensive, of course, but on par for this kind of experience and worthwhile for a special occasion, such as my birthday!
The visual artistry of the food is unparalleled. Everything that is brought to you is like a piece of art on a plate with extraordinary detail paid to the visual presentation of the food. A lot of it tastes really great too. I especially enjoyed the "Risotto Camouflaged as Pizza" dish.
I'm a vegetarian and was happy that they offered a version of their tasting menu to suit my diet. Though when I compared what I was getting to the regular non-vegetarian counterpart my wife was getting, it didn't always seem like an equivalent deal. Case-in-point, the "Breakfast at Gucci" – a VERY cute small bagel situation that my wife was given with caviar and scallop. I was brought a different dish, which looked nice, but wasn't a bagel for sure...couldn't they have done a mini bagel with some vegetarian topping instead so I could have had the same experience my wife was having?
Also she was brought hearty beef looking item...for that course I had a beautiful ribbon of parsnip creating that wasn't quite as satisfying to eat, I'd imagine as the beef across from me. Now, again I'm a vegetarian, but if you're making a vegetarian version of something, I think it would be better if it was a little more on-point in same way to the non-vegetarian version sitting across from you.
I was especially excited about the 5 Seasons of Cheddar as our favorite dish on Modena was the 5 Ages of Parmesan. The Beverly Hills cheddar one was not quite as good as the Parmesan tributee dish...in terms of flavor and textures. Okay.
The service overall was a little off too. Our server was very nice and accommodating. He was, as one would expect, very knowledgeable about the food and we enjoyed the explanations of the dishes as well. But the timing was not right. We had food out before our cocktails come. Dishes came very quickly one after the other with no space to breathe in between. We actually had to tell them to slow down as it felt a bit rushed.
So all of these points together led to an experience which was still elevated above most of the dining experiences we have on a day to day basis, but a little disappointed at the overall food and experience.
If we came back I think we'd forgo the tasting menu and order a-la-carte to have more control over what we got.
All that having been said the atmosphere was comfortable and even a little fun which is nice for such a high-end restaurant where the trend (including at Osteria Francescana in Modena) is to be...

When I found out that Massimo Bottura was opening a restaurant in Beverly Hills, my head exploded. For those of you who do not know, Massimo has been voted the BEST chef in the world THREE years in a row. His original restaurant, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy is one of the hardest restaurants to book a reservation.
I tried going on my birthday in June, but they kept closing due to covid. I was finally able to go this past Monday night with my sister, and it was a foodie's dream come true.
The ambiance is GORGEOUS, it's on Rodeo Dr. in the heart of Beverly Hills. Everything is Gucci, from the plates to the uniforms, so it's très chic. The food was prepared by Chef Mattia, who has closely worked with Bottura. Mattia is super talented and his passion for food comes across each dish he prepares. Each bite was delectable. My sister and I had the "tasting menu" paired with Sicilian white wine (of course). I highly recommend the tasting menu so you can taste some of Bottura's most famous dishes, including the "Tortellini with Parmigiano Reggiano sauce". Chef Mattia is so talented!
I can write a whole review on the service alone. The servers instantly recognized me because they used to work at another restaurant in Beverly Hills that I frequent. My sister and I were treated like Queens. The servers, Silvestro & Marco, and the manager Marino were constantly at our table making sure everything was perfect, and it was. They made us laugh hard, and entertained us the entire night. Chef Mattia also came to our table to make sure we enjoyed our meal. I will never forget this dining experience.
For those complaining about the portions and the prices, you clearly have no idea who Massino Bottura is, nor understand what his food is all about.
I know many are bummed they can't travel to Italy right now. Let's make the best of it! You can be instantly transported to Italy by going to Osteria Gucci. You WILL be able to travel to Italy again sooner than you know, in the meantime, this is a good alternative. For now, let's stay safe and let's stay local. I am sure making the best of it! This too shall...
