My wife and I were in search of a nice sit down meal to celebrate some milestones. We settled on sushi and found Yellowtail Robata Grill and Sushi. We had a good time overall but here was the good, the bad, and the ugly.
The good: We arrived early Friday evening, and it was a good thing we did. While this place has ample seating, it definitely got busy quite quickly. By the time we left, 55 minutes later, there were people waiting for tables.
The server asked us if we had been there before, and after telling her we had not she explained the menu. The server was attentive and the food arrived quickly.
We started with vegetable tempura. It was light, crispy, and very tasty. I could have eaten multiple as my meal and I would have been very happy. For dinner we chose a California Roll, fried California Roll, Philadelphia Roll, and a Crunchy Roll. It was the perfect amount for the two of us. Just like appetizer, the food was great.
The bad: While our server was attentive, she seemed a bit pushy as if she was trying to up-sell on every. She asked if we wanted anything from the bar and appetizers, which I see as being standard. When we ordered just four sushi rolls she asked if we wanted other items from the dinner menu. When we said that we would just have sushi she looked surprised as if we should have ordered more.
The ugly: While I covered the server being pushy, she brought it to another level toward the end of the meal. When we first sat down and ordered our drinks, my wife ordered something from the bar. I ordered a soda and explained that I was driving so I would not be drinking alcohol. Throughout the meal the server brought me refills. At the end of the meal we contemplated having dessert and my wife ordered a second drink from the bar. When the drink came out the server asked us if we wanted dessert and asked me if I now wanted something from the bar. We were full from all of the sushi so we declined dessert and I declined anything from the bar. Maybe she forgot that I was driving, maybe she was being pushy, maybe she was ensuring that I had not changed my mind, maybe she was just trying to give us the best service.
Conclusion: The food at Yellowtail Robata Grill and Sushi tasted as great as it looked. The restaurant was clean and inviting. The service was good and while I felt that this sever was pushy, she did a great job being attentive and explaining things thoroughly. We will definitely...
Read moreThis IS the "go to" hidden spot in Clarksville, with the most authentic sushi dishes around; as well as a well rounded Asian cuisine menu, for those who aren't preferential to sushi. They have bento bowls, miso soup, sake, and it is the ONLY place in town, that I have been able to find ANY Thai coconut curry. (Which is unbelievably delicipus!!) They do have bento bowls, ans a small menu for children, however, although you can bring children, if you want...the atmosphere is a little more "grown up," so I don't think toddlers would do well here. I took my 8 yo and 12 yo, because they are used to authentic Japanese cuisine, and they loved it. Please bear in mind, this is NOT one of the chain style, hibachi restaurants; where the chefs perform in front of you. This is more of a quiet, intimate, but very charming, authentic Japanese/Asian Cuisine and Sushi Restaurant. (There is several of the performing hibachi restaurants in Clarksville though, if this is what you are specifically seeking; just Google Hananoki Hibachi Restaurant.) I was rather surprised by the actual design and interior of this restaurant though. Being that we are located in TN, instead of designing the restaurant on typical "kitchy" Asian decor, they really went for the charming rural TN with a touch of industrial vibe. The tables are each handmade of different aged barnwood, that was collected throughout TN and KY; so no 2 are actually alike. The drink menu, although abundant in an array of different cocktails, wines, spirits, etc, personally didn't suit my taste; however, I am inclined to give it another go, considering I know everyone can have a bad night. This restaurant is still relatively new, as it opened in the late fall of 2016. (Prior to its opening, the other "go to" sushi and Asian cuisine restaurant, was Kohana. Although this restaurant is still very enjoyable, and has a beautiful atmosphere as well; Yellowtail has taken the number one spot for me, due to the exceptional...
Read moreI've been here twice in the last couple of months and both experiences were less than memorable. I thought I'd give them another shot, this the reason for my second visit. (Previously had the Bulgogi; lacked in flavor and was just thinly sliced meat in a flavorless brown sauce, with what appeared to be a whole onion mixed in too). Let's be clear, they are a sushi place, not a dinner restaurant.
My party of 3, got here before the bustle of the weekend rush this past Friday. We were seated after a short wait and our waiter greeted us promptly. Although it was busy, Benjamin was very attentive, took our orders, and checked on us. It was my dinner that was completely lacking. I don't complain or fuss about my food, unless there is something worthy of complaining about. I had the Katsu Donburi; a fried pork cutlet with rice and egg. Key word FRIED. It doesn't state how it's prepared (it says fried) but to my fault, I didn't ask. Nonetheless, when you hear/read fried, you think crispy/crunchy bites. Not in this case. Apparently, once the cutlet is fried, the egg component is apparently poured over the cutlet, with the addition of the steaming rice below it, resulted in a very soggy and limp piece of meat. I separated out all of the meat and placed it on a plate for the waiter to see. He apologized and asked the manager if anything could be done. Well, to my surprise, Benjamin came back and said he tried his best but the manager flat out said no. Also, the manager couldn't be bothered to come explain it to me himself/herself. I guess because they were busy and going to make money anyway, but couldn't lose $14!!! I didn't even want a refund or a new piece of meat! I just wanted to point out that the dish and how it's prepared is misleading, resulting in a very unsatisfying meal and dining experience. Needless to say, we all agreed in unison, we won't be coming back for a while. And if anyone asks me for a recommendation, it will be "sure, if you're only...
