SHOR is the restaurant for the Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort. If it had been located several floors up, where they currently have a pool and outdoor bar, it would have been preferable.
Another issue was that the indoor seating made me feel oddly vulnerable as the dark came on and people could see IN, but a diner wouldn't be able to see OUT.
So, the outdoor seating would be preferable (if you want privacy) but rain and heat, or extreme cold in the winter, could make that uncomfortable. To add to the problem, it was just above street level traffic so there were vehicles zipping back and forth, and exhaust fumes to accompany them. A higher vantage point would have allowed people to see much further, enjoying the views and sunsets, without noise and exhaust fumes.
That being said, the waiter was delightful and the food was every bit as good as you could expect from a restaurant in a Hilton resort. We chose to make our dinner a tapas exploration.
The creamed brussel sprouts with creole mustard are, shockingly, excellent. Perhaps brussel sprout afficianados would not be surprised, but I found them to be incredible: Creamy and flavorful with a bit of bite.
We decided to also try the Creole Shrimp Remoulade, believing that the two should be complementary. The shrimp were plump, not overdone, the remoulade was very nice but quite standard. The "prawn cracker" was no mistake. There was only one. That was fine when it was just two of us, but if others wanted to share, that would have been a disappointment.
Definitely pass on the caesar salad. The promised crispy prosciutto was nowhere to be seen. Instead, they substituted dehydrated cheese crackers (solid cheese that is crunchy). That is perfectly acceptable, but it was disappointing to be surprised by this. The dressing was nothing like caesar dressing (not even a hint of anchovies). Just to be sure, I asked the waiter if it really was the caesar salad, and he assured me it was.
The seared scallops with maque choux and corn crema were delicious and tender, with a nice hint of brine.
Overall, I would definitely go back if we were just going to snack on appetizers and have a few drinks. Apparently they're known for making the perfect mojito (which is rare). Their iced tea is fresh and I have never had better water, as odd as that sounds. My friend and I both found it surprising and we couldn't quite figure out what made it stand out. I suspect they add an extremely small amount of sugar, but he...
Read moreJust okay. We visited this restaurant for its convenience since we were staying at the Hyatt. Dinner was delicious but a little pricy. We only did dinner once. Breakfast was good and reasonably priced. We had breakfast twice. Biggest issue was the service. We were seated quickly and the hostess were very polite, however, all three times we waited for our server and no one came for quite a while. Not even to offer coffee. The service was pretty slow and all but the second server were rushing through our orders. The location was not that busy. I know we came back but we figured maybe it was the server. I don’t think they are very organized with how the tables are split amongst servers.
Update* I received a phone call the very next day from Joe (Hyatt manager) who was disappointed to hear about the poor service. He offered for us to return for an appetizer and drinks, perhaps give them another chance. We didn’t have dinner plans with the intent to watch the sunset on the beach but my husband convinced me we should stop in. We were seated by Joe himself. The bartender was amazing and very attentive to us. We had some drinks and an appetizer which was great. We decided to order dinner, which came out timely. Our Steak was overcooked (well done) and so was the person who sat next to us at the bar. That was a chef issue and I can report that on our first night my steak was perfectly cooked. Overall I was happy enough to say that I would return. I appreciate the prompt call, that alone was impressive as far as service...
Read moreWe had super high hopes for this restaurant. They were on a list of top buffets so we tried their $70 Thanksgiving buffet, but sadly, was deeply disappointed. First, and most importantly, the buffet wasn't well stocked! The sushi didn't look fresh or appetizing. It was very messy. Real sushi lovers will skip it. I've seen much cheaper buffets pull this off much better. The orientation of the buffet was odd too. You passed the deserts on an open table as you were escorted in. Again off putting. The turkey was very dry, although I'm told prime rib was acceptable, I didn't try it. When Brussels sprouts and pretzel rolls are the highlight of your meal, that tells you all you needed to know! The salads were messy. I wish they had a salad bar with fresh vegetables that you could build yourself with your choice of dressing, I think that would've saved the day. I could've at least eaten that. Instead I barely ate anything because nothing was special. They kept running out of stuff and it took a long time for them to refresh. Just really sloppy and disappointing. I'm curious how they received the reviews they have. Most people didn't seem that happy with the food when we eating. Maybe they're better when you order off the menu but I wouldn't give them another chance. Just don't waste your money on the buffet! And not having ice cream was just...
