I was in Florida on a business trip and had a serious craving for Mexican food. I gave this place a shot, and over two nights, I tried the street tacos—lengua, carnitas, asada—and a lengua burrito. Let me just say: this was hands-down the most authentic Mexican food I’ve had since moving away from the West Coast back in 2016.
The asada was both crispy and tender, the carnitas were exactly as they should be—slightly crisp on the edges, juicy, and full of flavor—and the lengua was absolutely spot-on. The house-made Diablo sauce had just the right balance of heat and flavor.
The staff were friendly and attentive—one even ran down the street after me when I accidentally left my credit card behind. Talk about above and beyond.
My only small suggestion would be to give the corn tortillas a quick fry in a bit of oil. When just warmed on a pan, they tend to fall apart once they cool. But honestly, that’s a minor tweak in an otherwise fantastic experience.
I really wish I’d come back for a third visit instead of wasting a meal at The Spotted Donkey. Great food, great people—I’ll definitely return next time I’m in town.
*I forgot to mention also had the birria tacos! They...
Read moreI struggled a lot writing this review because every place starts with 5 stars in my book. I loathe giving less than 4, but today it was simply based on value and experience that netted 3 stars. The staff was very friendly, but slow. We waited for everything and little things like getting supplies delivered to the front door during lunch only slowed them more. Plan your days better. Anyway, the Aquachile TrioMix is the BEST ceviche I have ever had! Amazing and very spicy! However, some nacho chips would have made this review 5 stars alone! It needs that "shovel" to carry the goodness to your lips. The Fajita Taco Salad was extremely disappointing. OMG, it had hardly any lettuce and about 1/2 pound of green peppers (not literally). See my pics for proof. It should be called green bell pepper salad tbh. The house margarita was okay at best. The $4 bottled water was just abusive. Seriously, I would have ordered beer had I known. So, margarita, 2 waters, ceviche, and taco salad with tip was $70. My experience wasn't worth that price so wouldn't go back. I suspect a lot of the food is probably good, but this day it just...
Read moreIt was okay. Saw the high star rating and was excited. Service was fine, wasn't above and beyond, wasn't bad. Food was okay. Husband got two beef tacos that were $6 a piece. Flavor was good he said, but for the price they were pretty small. My family loves refried beans, we can legit just eat them by themselves, so when we got them and they were cold, that was super disappointing. I got nachos for my meal with no sour cream. The description said "chips piled high" to which I did not get, which is okay. Again, steep price- though I do understand that I am in Clearwater beach so prices will be higher bc of that. My problem is all the water at the bottom of my nachos. No one likes soggy nachos. I'm assuming it's from the chicken not being drained from its juices before being poured over the chips. Again, nothing was hot. We went at 6:30pm. I will not recommend nor will I be back, but I'm glad I tried it out. I did add some photos to show that I was not being over dramatic about the water at the bottom of my plate. My nachos...
