This place has lots of potential!! UPDATE!!!!!! I returned to Something Special on 3 different occasions - Juneteenth- good experience- just a VERY long time to receive our drinks, the next visit food was so so, service was blah, and the last visit this past weekend I invited about 9 other people to meet me there - I arrived at 5:45 p.m and our server Jasmine sat us at a table for 10 (4 of us were there), I placed an order at 6 p.m for salmon bites and a beer- NO ONE was in the place except 3 other people. Salmon bites came out an hour and 15 minutes later!! Not HOT and overcooked! I then ordered a coca cola and it took 1 HOUR for the server to bring it to the table after I inquired several times. The rest of our party arrived, we told the server 1 TAB (she said she loved it), we placed orders for food, drinks, etc. at 8:30 the owner came over and said she needed our table for a 9 p.m reservation...there were other tables she could have used because we were seated along a wall, I complained because we were still actively ordering and drinking, but reluctantly gave up 6 seats from our table, (by 11 p.m the 9 p.m reservation still had not shown up), we had about 5 people leave when the owner came over because they would not have had any where to sit, about 9 30 p.m the owner came to me on the other side of the restaurant ( I had gone over to order drinks for 3 of my guest that were sitting at the bar since they had to give up seats) and the owner was very confrontational and said to the server--this the one that said she had to wait over an hour for her food. I told her I didn't have to lie and I know what time I ordered and how long it took, I also told her I had been there several times and each time it was always something!! She rolled her eyes at me and said I can pull the receipts/tape ( I said I can too because I looked at my phone when I ordered and when the food finally came out) This place has potential with the right management. Clearly this is the owner's first restaurant and her attitude needs to be adjusted if she wants to succeed! I have seen at least 4 BUSINESSES open and close in this same location! I have friends that like to go to places close to home, if invited by these friends again, I will pass for sure....health score is 81, there seems to be a problem with food not being hot when served and proper storage of food! OAN: Jasmine was a nice server just seemed new to being a server. RESPONSE TO OWNER'S COMMENT- NO you did not see me back at your restaurant- I went to Hal's Steakhouse the next week. When you looked at your order receipts I guarantee you saw that I placed my order at 5:55 p.m and received my food around 7:15 p.m. if not later. I ordered a coca cola 2 different times and it took an hour each time to get the...
Read moreI wanted to enjoy this restaurant/lounge. Myself and friends attended on a Sunday around 12pm for brunch. There was no wait and we were seated immediately. We were greeted and told our waiter would be with us soon. Took our waiter about 10 mins to come and take our orders. No big deal. The menu was rather small. I did check it prior to coming but was hoping there would be more options. The food and drinks took about 25 mins to come out. Playlist was nice, no DJ or live music during the time- which was strange as it advertised and “exotic girls brunch Sunday”Were we expecting a lounge vibe. It was not, more of just a restaurant which was okay. The waitress were all dress in blue, even one with her butt out her shorts- keep this for later. I order the Lobster and Waffle ($30). My lobster only tasted the like the breading that it was fried in. Very salty. The waffle was dense, more like pancake mix when it’s used to make a Belgian waffle. Another person in our party had shrimp tacos, they looked delicious but very wet from the pico so all the tortillas were soggy and falling apart. Another person had fish and grits. She said the fish was good but the sauce that I was covered it did it no justice. I tasted the sauce knew that it was heavy whipping cream and simple seasoning maybe old bay. It was bland with not much flavor at all. We kind of ate around our food. Our drinks were okay. I had a martini and it was sweetest I ever had (more juice than anything). One person ordered mojito and the mint leaves were brown. There was a staff member maybe even owner I am not sure walking around asking everyone how their food was. At first I was timid but I decided to let him know so they can adjust. He asked suggestions. I advised the sweeten the waffle maybe a pinch of sugar or honey. It would offset the salty the lobster that needs to be seasoned prior to dropping so it full of flavor and not just fried breading. He seemed to have an attitude and walked off. My friends didn’t get a chance to tell them about their food. Our waiter came back. My total alone was $59, one plate of food and drink. Gratuity was automatically added (15%) Now back to the girl with the butt out her shorts. She was serving the table next to us. The tables were fairly close and being she had no pants on her butt was about 6 inches away from food all of the 3 times she was at their table. Very unsanitary and not mindful at all. All in all I won’t be returning. Again, I wanted to like this place but the attitude of the employee after giving him feedback and the butt next to my food was...
Read moreI met up with co-workers for dinner at Something Special. None of us had been there before.
Cons: We ordered several appetizers to share. One was called "whiting strips" on the menu and was actually just two pieces or regular-sized pieces of whiting. We also had fried salmon bites that were completely bland, not seasoned well at all. We also had the wings which were tiny and just meh. The chicken fingers were obviously frozen and dry; worse than fast food quality. After our food arrived, we had to wait a while for utensils, which is annoying. Utensils and water should be provided when seated, but we had to ask for both. I ordered salmon with spinach. I started to order the mashed potatoes, but the server advised that they tended to be pasty and bland. The salmon was terrible!!! It was over-cooked and not fresh; and it tasted really NOT fresh. It's a bad sign when a restaurant can't cook salmon - or spinach. The spinach tasted burnt and had an awful after taste I couldn't identify. I only ate one bite of each. A waste of $25. A woman, I assumed is the owner, walked the restaurant talking to patron and asking how things were. She noticed that I didn't eat my food, or take it to-go, and asked me about it. When I told her about the bad salmon and spinach, she said the salmon had been purchased that day from the Farmer's Market. I highly doubt that. The service was just okay - and little weird. Our server was wearing a skirt so short that her butt cheeks were exposed. At one point, she sat down on the bench next to my colleague when taking our orders. What?! They add a 15% gratuity to each check. We missed it because the server only showed us our checks on the handheld, instead giving us a paper check. So, in addition to the 15% added to the check, we also tipped on top of that. I found it sneaky and I don't like that we weren't informed of the gratuity. I wondered why the server hugged me - I guess she was happy to be tipped 2x's.
Pros: The restaurant is nicely decorated and there was DJ. The atmosphere and music was good. The alcoholic beverages and fries were good, too.
I usually give a restaurant two chances, so I may try it again and order something different. I am rooting for this black-owned restaurant. Hopefully, the food and service will get better because folks may not come for just good music,...
