I had a reservation for a party of six at the uptown location this past Saturday and arrived about 15 minutes early. Since three members of our group hadn’t arrived yet, we couldn’t be seated, so I waited at the bar. The female bartender was friendly, and I ordered my usual Grandioso Margarita—which I always enjoy, it’s $16. I closed out my tab right away, anticipating that my group might show up at any moment.
While I was waiting and minding my business, a male bartender came over and was a little chatty. Shortly after, one of my friends arrived, and I ordered her a Hibiscus Margarita. I asked him to close out the tab again, but when the credit card terminal came out, it showed a total of $44. I explained that I had already paid for my drink, so he adjusted the bill—though even then, the final amount was around $11, which still didn’t add up. Just odd all around.
Once we were seated, our experience didn’t improve much. Our server seemed rushed and disengaged. Every time we had a question or wanted to order more drinks, she walked away too quickly for us to say anything. She did let us know that the kitchen was running behind, she said: “just wanted to let you all know the kitchen is running behind so you’re going to have to wait for your food”, which wasn’t an issue for us since we weren’t in a hurry.
I ordered the arepa appetizer, which came with four pieces. They were quite good, and I had only eaten two, planning to take the rest home. Unfortunately, before I could say anything, the server came by near the end of our meal and cleared the plate without asking if we were finished.
Overall, I had a disappointing experience at this location. Between the billing confusion at the bar and the rushed, inattentive service at the table, it didn’t live up to the...
Read moreIt hurts me to write this because I went in with high expectations based on great experiences at other Mexican Sugar locations I’ve been to…
From start to finish, our visit last night was poorly executed.
Seems like the AC was broken in the entire restaurant. The whole place became a steam room. This would have been excusable if we at least had our waters refilled in a timely manner but we had to ask every time for more.
Once seated, it took about 10 minutes to get waters and meet our server. While he was personable and helpful, he seemed to be stretched way too thin. Every drink and appetizer item we ordered took 20+ minutes to come out each time.
Since our server was stretched thin, whole items were missed (ex ordered queso, never got queso, wasn’t worth reminding).
We eventually get our mains ordered, but by the time it came out everyone was drained from the heat and the wait.
I will say this; the quality of the food was fantastic when it did come out. There is no denying that the food at Mexican Sugar is delicious.
It was a friend’s birthday dinner, and we had originally booked the Agave room, but were told when we checked in that a different group had booked it over us. Happens. That’s the game. Just wish there was more communication.
I render my rating with a certain heaviness because I know this place can do better. The quality of the food alone shows that it is possible.
They simply weren’t dialed in last night. We shouldn’t be judged indefinitely on our worst nights, but it is worth acknowledging them.
It’ll be a few weeks/months, but I do intend to go back again, and I hope to update this...
Read moreWe arrived for our 9:30 reservation in the private area as pictured, but it seemed to be triple booked for the amount of space available, and we weren’t seated until almost closing. It’s Dallas(I was going to say it’s a nice area but it’s just Dallas) and it was a Saturday night, I was very hangry and I didn’t wanna upset my friend who’s birthday it was! She kept in good spirits which made things a little better!
I had very high expectations as the reviews for the food made me very excited to try it, however the food was not up to par. As my friend put it, it’s like they had a french chef, guessing what Mexican food is. Everything had very high notes of bitter, acidic, citrus tastes but no base or body. It’s almost as if we were eating meat, beans and rice, and someone was shouting the flavor of the dish from another room. The salsa was bitter and acidic, the guacamole had too much onion but was still flat and lime just made it more acidic, we had a table of about 15 people with about 10 of them not even eating anything on the plate. The rice, the only thing I really saw praise for, was way too salty and acidic. My mouth was raw after eating here.
The drinks have a strong tequila flavor but are not strong, just improperly mixed. Two stars because the decor matches fine dining, but maybe they should add more distractions to take the focus away from the subpar dining and service. 2 stars is generous, I wouldn’t even come back to a different location on a slower day. Mexican Sugar must be code for the sugar girls were piling into the bathroom for bc the only good thing about the dishes was...
