We came to Snooze with high expectations. We had read rave reviews, and the long line and 1 1/2 hour wait had us in anticipation to see the breakfast wonders that Snooze had to behold.
Getting on the wait list was relatively easy and straight forward. We gave our number and were told that we would receive a text message when our table was vacated, prior to cleaning (to give some lead time). This was expected, and actually have us some time to walk around and check out the downtown area nearby.
As predicted, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes later, we received a text message and returned to the restaurant. The hostess was very polite and quickly helped to seat us.
Snooze employs a 70s decor, with lots of stars and retro designs, and we found the setting to be fun and cheery.
I quickly found the Snooze Spuds Deluxe, a very promising hash brown dish with cheese, scallions, two eggs, and any two sides (I went with Avacado and "Soyrizo") My wife went for the Eggs Benedict option that allows you to select any two Benedict's, combining the standard and a version with Salmon and cream cheese).
The food came relatively quickly for the volume of business, though it helped that we had ordered a bloody for my wife during the wait (which was unfortunately disappointing and kind of bland).
The moment was upon us... And it was a bit anticlimactic. The Spuds were kind of mushy and not nearly as crispy as a purist might like. The Avacado was almost non-existent, a small sliver that made it through about three fork-loads. The Soyrizo was generous and well seasoned, the saving grace, though it didn't quite do enough to save an underwhelming dish. There was also a pretty large piece of ham nestled in amongst the Soyrizo, not really a problem for me since I am pretty flexible with my diet, but still something to be wary of for those who are more strict. We brought the extra ingredient to our waitress attention, with little response.
My wife's Benedict was actually pretty good, I found it flavorful, well-balanced, and aesthetically pleasing. I enjoyed the bites that I was able to steal, and she was pretty positive in her reactions. The only negative we saw was a somewhat small portion size, and disappointing side hash browns (a lump of somewhat moist shredded Spuds).
In summary, our experience did not live up the the hype. Snooze is a decent (yet spendy) diner for breakfast food, but in no way meets the expectations that are set for it (or...
Read moreFirst of all, let me say that the breakfast I had was pretty tasty. My issue was more about how the menu was structured and how I felt somewhat unsatisfied when my food arrived. I ordered the crab cake benny after mulling over the Bennies section of the menu. There were six options and a duo option where you could select two different ones for a slightly higher price. It was clearly stated that the crab cake version was not available for this option. It even read that all the Bennies included hashbrowns except the crabcake one. I was ok with that being, I had my mind fixed on the crabcake version and figured I would have a bite or two of my wife's hashbrowns. Then the food came... there was a single Bennie on the plate with nothing else. I asked the waiter if something was missing, and he replied its a hardy one, but if you want a hashbrown, I can bring you one. Ok... obviously, I was expecting two of these just like all the other selections and for $20.50, the most expensive option, most people would too.. After going back online and rereading the menu, It does say an egg, but it seems hidden in plain sight to me. In closing, I will say the food was good and the plating is elevated. We just found it on the expensive side. Especially when I left hungry after spending $56 for breakfast. And one last thing,... without sounding insensitive, we had to work our way through a cluster of vagrants begging on the corner. It felt unsafe and a little uneasy. Having a tent city across the street is not a great feel when approaching the place you picked out to have breakfast while...
