The Harbor Tavern — Restaurant in Destin

I’ve been coming to The Harbor Tavern since the first week they opened almost five years ago, and it still blows my mind how good the food is. This place is a true local gem and a real family-owned business. If you don’t know the story behind it, talk to John and Tony. They’ve catered for some big names, and their stories alone are worth hearing.

What really makes this place stand out is what happens when John, Tony, and their dad, a longtime chef, get in the kitchen together. The food they create is on another level. The specials are incredible. When I order a main dish and a special, it isn’t just me. It’s usually me and my girlfriend, and we still end up taking food home because both meals are that good.

People also don’t realize how much work goes into those specials. They don’t make them during the busy tourist season because they take real time and effort. When things slow down, the locals and snowbirds get to enjoy the full creativity of the kitchen, and that’s when the magic happens.

When it comes to entertainment, Tony has a real ear for it. The talent he brings in covers almost every genre. He isn’t booking acts because they’re trendy. He books them because they’re genuinely good, and it shows every time.

Another thing I appreciate is that The Harbor Tavern is generation non-centric. They appeal to everyone. Look at their schedule and you’ll see all types of music and events. Whether it's peak season or off-season, there is always something for every crowd.

And here’s something important for anyone choosing between the local restaurants in this area. There are about five spots nearby that serve drinks and get plenty of foot traffic. We go to all of them. But if you want exceptional food, this is the place you come to. The Harbor Tavern does not miss.

We were lucky enough to slide in Friday evening before the crush. Bar staff was skillful and friendly, and we were served a mojito that was dangerously delicious. The menu had plenty of hard-to-choose, tempting options; the pair of us chose the tuna poké and pork potstickers appetizers. Appetizers? No, they would better be described as sumptuous foreplay! I haven't had poké that delicious outside of the Pacific, and the potstickers exploded with juicy, flavorful filling. For the main act we shared a gyro-style pita with fries. As gyro lovers, we were blown away by the perfect layering of ingredients and the generous portions. The fries has the perfect crisp and crunch...no soggy shoes strings or flavorless planks of potato here! I desperately wanted to keep sampling and savoring, knowing that everything was going to be a continuous explosion of flavorful ecstasy, however I chose to contain my enthusiasm and end with the refreshing blueberry lemonade cocktail. I know that I am going to enjoy coming back throughout the off-season (and beyond) to this epic harborside joint. Destin's food scene just received a stellar punch to the tastebuds, and our local hangout scene has been gifted with a groovy, laid-back joint that we have been craving. Wish I could give more...
