Had a night in Detroit to entertain myself and started searching for something to do. I had no idea JP existed outside Dexter so I was elated to see the brewpub and find that they also had brick oven pizza. This was a no brainer! I have drained many JP 750s back home in Chicago so the thought of having some of those beers on draught was too much to contemplate! Oro de Calabaza is in my top 10 (out of over 1000) in my personal ratings on ratebeer.com so that should give you an idea as to my excitement.
The beer: I started out with their flagship, Bam Biere. Carbonation seemed a little low but not a huge deal. But it was served VERY cold. I keep my vodka in the freezer at home and I enjoy my PBR and similar ilk ice cold. But this was a travesty. Aromas were dead and unable to creep out of the glass, just a hint of that trademarked funk, hiding in an igloo. After a couple, I moved onto a Bam Noire, another 750 I had sampled previously. Same problems! Nearly still, no effervesce and far too cold. I tried Isla EstraƱa last and indeed proved the issues were widespread. Saison should have a voluminous head, this had just a scant ring of oxygenated foam caused by the pour.
The food: ordered the prosciutto leek pizza. Potatoes and leeks is a classic combo and potato pizza is an underrated delight. It came out quickly and looked great! My mouth watered as we waited for it to cool enough to handle and eat. When I went to grab for my first slice, it tore under its own weight about halfway from the tip to the crust. Hmmmm....well that's odd, I thought. I let it cool enough not to put myself in the burn ward and dug in - I found nearly unleavened dough, totally underbaked. It was soft like play dough, I checked the bottom of the crust and it had almost no browning at all. Which is ironic since this is allegedly a brick oven! We had to eat with a fork and knife because no one could pick up these floppy slices with your hand, there was no structure there whatsoever to heft the cheese and toppings.
Total disappointment: poorly tapped beer and a waste of a pizza cooked totally improperly. But the real heartbreaker was the reputation of the name on the door which is what drew me in in the first place. Unfortunately, they won't get a second chance with so many other options...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHorrible restaurant all the way around. One very unhappy miserable bartender made us wait 20 minutes before she took our order and there was nobody in the restaurant. She did not smile or greet us she apparently appeared to hate her job. We waited 25 minutes for our food once we ordered after 20 minutes and our hot food arrived cold. I saw One person preparing the food and the one person at the bar taking orders ordered and delivering the food but she looks like she really didn't care about her job or the restaurant, and definitely not the customers. I've read feedback from this place in the manager said to all everyone to complained about the same thing that I am that they will look into it. Well apparently they never did. I believe this place will probably go by the way of the Royal oak jolly pumpkin and bandit, their other restaurant, which they closed within the last couple weeks. Way overpriced cold food and wait staff that doesn't appear want to work I'll spend my money at a different restaurant. Don't bother going here it's a waste of your time and money, it appears the wait staff doesn't want you to bother them. Very disappointing I will never go back here I will tell all my friends about my...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMe and my partner's favorite destination in Midtown/Cass Corridor. Their menu is small, but let's be honest, you go here for the brews. And even with the small menu, the food here is reliable and consistently delicious! We've been here several times in the past year and the food is just as tasty as it was the first time we visited (the pizza is phenomenal). Wait staff and kitchen are pretty hands off--ordering can be done on your phone, plates/utensils and water are self-serve--but are super friendly nonetheless. Not sure what the rule is but we bus our own tables afterwards out of courtesy to the next guests, and we encourage you to do the same!
Okay, so the brews--there is something for everyone here: sours, saisons, IPAs, ales, lagers, ciders... the list goes on, and it is very well curated. Enjoy the variety and of a giant brewpub with the cordiality and aesthetic of a microbrewery.
They are pet friendly! And there's a dog park nearby where you can bring your furry friend. Overall, this place is always a good time, rain or shine, weeknight or weekend.
Overall, this place is an easy favorite. We love it here, and we'll always find...
