I am writing to file a complaint against Tommy’s Detroit Bar regarding misleading menu pricing and a lack of clear communication with customers. During a recent visit, I ordered based on the printed menu, which listed tater tots at $3.00 and a 5-piece chicken meal at $9.95. However, when I received the bill, I was charged $6.95 for the tater tots and $11.51 for the chicken—significant increases with no prior notice.
Although a small sign at the top of the menu mentioned that prices may vary, it provided no specifics: no itemized list, no percentage, and no explanation of which items were affected or why. It is highly misleading to post one price and charge another, especially without verbal clarification from staff. Customers have a right to know what they will be charged before the bill arrives.
I attempted to follow up by phone to express my concern, but my calls were declined multiple times. This lack of accountability only adds to my frustration.
My questions are: Is it legal for businesses to charge more than the prices listed without giving specific notice? Does a vague sign without itemized changes meet consumer protection standards? Are businesses allowed to increase prices during slow seasons without informing customers of the reason or amount?
This feels like price gouging and dishonest business practice. While prices can change due to market conditions, transparency is essential. A disclaimer that lacks specifics is not a reasonable substitute for clear and honest pricing.
The community deserves honesty and respect, especially from long-standing...
Read moreI really like Tommy’s. The food is great and I go there with my coworkers about once per month. The waitress we usually have is awesome, however, she wasn’t there last week when we went for lunch. We had the absolute worst service that I have ever had in my 30+ years working in the downtown Detroit area. The waitress did not greet us at all and did not make eye contact with any of us. She took our orders then ignored until it was time to pay. The cook had to deliver our food to us, even though he was busy doing his own job. When my friend asked for separate checks, the waitress replied, “You should have said that earlier”. When I told her that I only received my salad, but not the wings I asked for, she handed me a bill for the salad only. She never addressed the missing food. Still no eye contact. My other friend had to find her own carry-out container. Needless to say, we did not leave a tip. When we got up to leave, the waitress said to another customer, “You can finally sit down now.” I think this waitress usually works in the evening. Perhaps her personality is more palatable when the liquor is flowing. We originally back to Tommy’s in a few months, but hopefully we won’t encounter this...
Read moreI was visiting Detroit on a business trip (per usual) and stopped in because it was the only place open within 10 mins of The Godfrey Hotel. I was pleasantly surprised by the warmth and friendliness of the staff, particularly Steven, the bar owner (I believe). We chatted about STL (where I'm from), and he shared a few interesting stories. We joked with each other about a variety of topics. My intention was to order my food to go because I had worked almost 15 hours today and just wanted to decompress. I ended up staying and eating my food. The menu is endless and the prices are from 2005. After viewing the menu I realized this place offered 4 of my many favorite things in life: 1) fresh popped buttered popcorn, 2) grilled cheese with lettuce and tomatoe, 3) fresh crispy tator tots, and 4) deep eddies lemon flavored vodka. Whewww chile I was in heaven. I watched Steven treat everyone who entered those doors like family (including me, and I've never stepped foot in this establishment prior to 2/25/25). If you're local to the downtown Detroit area and you're looking for a spot to vibe out, maybe watch some sports or shoot the shit with a cool ass bartender... tell...
