My son and I were visiting Gatlinburg for the first time when we stumbled upon Waffle de Lys, an exquisite dessert shop tucked into the bustling, southern charm of the main strip. Despite the large line and an even larger group of people waiting, the two young ladies working behind the counter remained focused, crafting each drink and sundae with care and precision. Every creation looked as beautiful as the pictures on their menu, which is no small feat!
We ordered hot apple ciders and a waffle topped with ice cream, caramel, bananas, and whipped cream. I can honestly say it was one of the best desserts I’ve ever had—whether in this city, another country, or even another continent.
We loved it so much that we had to return the next day for another sundae! This time, we were greeted by the owner, who was working alongside what I believe was her son. They kindly asked us to wait a moment before taking our order, and then the young man stepped up and explained what makes their waffles so unique. Little did he know, we were already hooked! His pride and enthusiasm were infectious, and honestly, adorable.
As we waited, we had the chance to chat with the owner while she made our treats, and she was just as delightful as her creations. It’s clear that this business is a true labor of love.
I don’t often write reviews, but Waffle de Lys is truly one of a kind. The passion and authenticity of the people behind this shop deserve to be recognized. Keep up the fantastic work, Waffle de Lys, and best wishes for continued success for your...
Read moreWhere to start? We were on the hunt for ice cream when we saw the menu posted on the window of this quaint brown and yellow-striped building. Thinking we could find it here, we were surprised to realize there was a Belgian Waffle joint run by the nicest French family you'll probably ever meet.
Obviously we weren't particularly prepared for a warm food or a waffle at the time, but they were so kind we stopped to talk. After a few minutes we had tried three sample spoons of product and had little doubt in our minds we were getting ice cream anymore considering how incredibe their food looked to be.
We ordered the Oh La La and they even placed a scoop of uncharacteristically amazing ice cream on top at our request. Just think, a Waffle restaurant with a French twist who's ice cream just also happens to be incredible is not something anyone should have been ready for. We made it 20-50 feet before finding a bench, where we inhumanely devoured the entire thing. It was gone in maybe (5) minutes.
We were blessed with the opportunity to meet these wonderful people, try this amazing food, and learn so much about two cultures at the same time in a truly beautiful marriage of Belgian and French delicacy.
If you are passing by and you TRULY don't think this is for you, try their samples. I can all but guarantee you will change your mind and come back for seconds,...
Read moreOMG... if you dont stop here you are missing out!!! Take your insulin and make room in your stomach, because this is the most heavenly thing you will ever put in your mouth. We got the La Crunchy with strawberries instead of bananas at the suggestion of the super nice cashier.
The waffle itself is prepared fresh. It was sooo warm with the perfect crunch on the outside and fluffly soft on the inside. The homemade whipped cream just melts in your mouth, creamy and not too sweet. Fresh strawberry slices give the perfect amount of sweet and tart. The cookie butter is TOO DIE FOR!!! Gooey and crunchy with like a ginger snap flavor but milder. The belgian chocolate sauce is super smooth. But it's hard to have anything bad thats chocolate. We opted to add a scoop of ice cream. It was perfectly cold and sweet. The best juxtaposition to the warm waffle.
I don't even like waffles or vanilla ice cream and i wanted to eat another one right away...definitely coming back for this...
