Glendale | Don’t Miss These Middle Eastern “Big Buns”!

Authentic Georgian restaurant in Glendale. I was hankering for some khachapuri and this place kept coming up in my results, so came here on a Saturday around 1pm to grab some lunch! They’re open for outdoor dining during covid. It seems that smoking was allowed. Bathrooms are available inside on the left hand side. Street parking (metered) is available; if you get lucky, you can find some 2 hour parking a few blocks out but read the signs. Food-wise, everything was delicious. As it’s in the name, you must get the Khinkalis. You can get them boiled or fried, and you can opt from mushroom, beef, or cheese. The fried cheese khinkali was my personal favorite although the steamed mushroom is a close second. You eat it by grabbing it from the stem so that you can slurp up the juices from the dumpling (don’t use a fork otherwise you lose the juice!). The pieli soup took a while to come out but the waitress gave us fair warning, and it was well worth it just for the warm phyllo dough covering on top. The soup was yogurt-y and came with a good amount of small dumplings. Of course, the khachapuri was super fresh and tasty. They do serve alcohol (including Armenian drinks) and credit cards are accepted. Overall, this place was super yummy and authentic - I’ll be back the next time I have a craving for some more khinkalis.

I went here to introduce the Ant to Georgian food, with focus on the khinkali. The server, Nyusha, was outstanding and helped us navigate the menu, with certainty, giving us very solid direction on which khinkali to order (meat boiled and cheese and mushroom fried) in which way and supported our favour of the borscht soup choice over the spas. She also encouraged us away from getting bread given how many khinkali we were getting. the borscht was the best I've had in Southern California. Everything about it was perfect. And we got the sturgeon skewer. Which really was the piece de resistance. It was outrageously good. It was my guest's first experience with khinkali borscht and sturgeon and she pointed out that the fish in the soup far better than the dumplings, which was ironic because that's the name of the place and that's what we came for. But the worst and the sturgeon really made it fine dining, as good as anything anywhere. I'll be Back for those. The atmosphere however gets three stars because the music was terrible, way to spirited covers of popular songs played too loudly.

IF THERE IS ROOM FOR MINUS STARS, I DEFINITELY ADD MILLIONS OF THEM. And if you leave 5 stars, then you probably have low expectations. Being an Armenian restaurant or not. I don't care. I am Armenian myself, but have never ever seen anything like this in anywhere before. It was a shame and a huge scam last night. Our group of 6 left the freaking place hungry. We had 9 khinkali, 8 fish skewers, 8 meat skewers and 6 shrimps. Literally counted. Not that we had caviar or anything. The quality and quantity did absolutely not match the price. We should have known better, the restaurant was empty, on a Halloween Saturday night. No wonder. They didn't have enough meat to complete the order either. The service was a total disaster. We asked for 2 salads with tomatoes and cucumber, the basic really, they brought 1. Then, half an hour later, we got 3 more, of which obviously we had ordered only one. Then, the bread basked was brought the last and was an extra $3, all the meat was gone... When the bill came in, we had a heart attack. $418 for the minimum on the table. For a zip of a sprite in a drink, we paid $3. I promise we did not have champagne nor caviar. Little that we realized, they already included $53.14 tip. Scam, oh yes hell. Of course. Can you believe they still do their TV promotion? The waitress was so naive she said "oh they exaggerate in the commercial, our portions are much smaller...." We should have read between lines right there... Conclusion: DO NOT GO THERE, DO NOT THROW YOUR MONEY OUT OF THE WINDOW IN THIS PLACE and LEAVE HUNGRY. Absolutely not worth it. WILL NEVER recommend...

I am half Georgian and from Tbilisi and its pretty sad when your American friends tell you the following "wow, the xinkali you guys rave about in your home country, taste so awful at TUMANYAN". I mean I had to try to believe the people giving the bad feedback. So me and my husband went to try and the minute the xinkali came, I couldn't believe how fake it looked. Then it tasted like rubber (rezin) and the fried once were not how it usually looks like when you make it. This is a complete joke. Oh and the worse part about this place is the price...Quality is awful, service is whatever (they greet you like with no smile), the price is expensive. Restaurants like these need: A. a good chef that will have a good recipe and good technique how to properly make a great xinkali. (its about texture and what you put inside) lol hayerenov asumenk ham chkar vopshe!!! Vopshe nepoxozhe bili na xinkali. B. they need to stop advertising great looking images of how their food looks like when its completely not the way their food looks like, and C. have some good servants with positive energy, have a little Georgian/Armenian atmosphere with duduk playing or georgian music playing. Something that people can say wow i had an unforgettable time. Something that they can compare to, otherwise it will be just a plain, dull restaurant. POINT...

We were disappointed with the service at this restaurant. We were not seated at the table we wanted (there were only two of us, but four tables for four people stayed completely free all evening, yet we were not allowed to take one). We were given empty glasses for water, but no water was poured until we asked for it. No one took our drink order: after ordering our main dishes and saying we would think about drinks, the staff never came back to ask. We had to call a waiter ourselves to order specific drinks. After we finished eating, the dirty plates stayed on our table for the rest of the evening - no one took them. It felt like the waiters never decided who was responsible for our table (there were 3 waiters, and every time a different waiter approached our table), so no one approached us unless we called them. No one asked if everything was okay or if we had any requests.

On the positive side - the food was delicious, especially the fried khinkali. The boiled khinkali were also good, and everything was served very quickly. We also enjoyed the cornelian cherry compote.

Overall, we liked the food and the quick service from the kitchen, but the staff’s attention and service quality were very disappointing. The restaurant did not meet our expectations. Rating: Food - 5/5 Atmosphere -...
