If Mia‘s table would reduce the salt content of their onion rings by 1/3 to 1/2 and leave the salt to be handled at the table to one’s personal taste; and perhaps switch to a less saturated fat, frying oil, one that doesn’t leave that tallowy taste on the roof of your mouth, they definitely would get my trophy for the best onion rings in town. As it is, Mia has to remain a guilty pleasure every so once in a while.
I remember having some really good onion rings at Fleming’s I need to go back there one day soon.
So you can guess how excited I was when I saw Alison Cook’s review of the onion rings at Goode Company Seafood on Westpark. Last year I visited Goode Company Taqueria after a positive report on their french fries but I was unimpressed.
I went back two more times just to be sure it wasn’t a bad batch on the first night that I went.
So today saw me coming to Goode Company Seafood to check out the onion rings. The dining car/rail car interior is gorgeous. And it brought back memories for me of when I was five or six years old, traveling by train from Flatonia to Houston with my grandmother. And the highpoint of those trips would be a grilled cheese sandwich and onion rings.
So today I ordered the onion rings, a cup of their bisque and a cup of their gumbo. The onion rings were good. I enjoyed them. I”d order them again. I detected a hint of cumin, but I don’t know why.
The bisque was also quite good. The gumbo was not. It was a thick, pasty, floury kind of gravy as opposed to the classic gumbo roux of southern Louisiana. Or even the slightly thicker ones of northern Louisiana. Light brown, almost blonde in color. I think a Louisianan would just roll their eyes at this one.
(Now, it’s a good thing when you put the shrimp in the gumbo at the end just before serving so that they don’t cook and toughen in the gumbo).
Unfortunately, today, the gumbo gravy was room temperature or slightly warmer and it wasn’t warm enough to heat up the shrimp so they were room temperature to cooll in the center.
I had the opportunity to discuss this with the person who waited on me and she explained that their recipe for gumbo is more of what they think of as a Texas style, what with the much thicker gravy, based on processing the vegetables in with the roux. She said that most people many people love it and come in and buy it by the gallon. And that next time I should ask for it “extra hot”.
Nope. “Umm, waitress, I ordered a waffle and you brought me a pancake” “Oh, thats what we think of as a more Texas style”.
So my comment would be to avoid the gumbo. Go get it at Viola and Agnes. — at Goode Company...
Read moreMy business partner and I have been coming here for years. A while back they were having some issues and we stopped coming as frequently as we had in the past. Actually, we hadn't visited in almost 2 years.
On a whelm we had an urge for their amazing crab bisque soup and decided to stop in. FYI. I would highly recommend anyone who's not allergic or have dietary restrictions to try this soup......BLUE CRAB, CORN, AND POBLANO BISQUE (BACON TOPPER). Honestly, I'm in love with it. Lots of flavor, extremely well seasoned but not salty. This soup serves as a great appetizer(cup) or meal (bowl) it's extremely filling, either way it won't disappoint.
As I digress, it was nearly a year now that we popped in and to our surprise there was a new and amazing manager named Chris, in charge, things were running smoothly, we're sold. We fell in love with this place all over again.
Seeing as though we love this soup, the service, and now the new manager. Goode company began to get a lot of our business again. We'd bring clients in for lunch or dinner, we're having our own staff meetings there. Like all great things they must come to an end.
Over the past couple of months we've noticed alot of change in staff which obviously affects service. Service on some days have gone from a 9+ to a 2.
This brings pause and caution to us. When we're bringing clients in town (although) most people are very understanding, we don't want small nuances to derail our meetings.
Chris is still amazingly gracious and owns every mistake that his team makes. He accepts responsibility for the chef, the bar, wait staff, ect, I respect him a great deal for doing so.
Lastly, I don't live in the city. I'm actually about an hour plus north of Houston, about 2 hours away from this restaurant. Every time I frequent Goode company restaurant I order the crab bisque to go, and food for my family. This time I ordered a fried shrimp platter with extra shrimp to go, with my bisque. Seeing as I'm a regular here, I felt no need to check my to go order. When I arrived home, there's no bisque but a soup that's supposed to be Gumbo. No extra shrimp with the food I ordered, no side item. This was a...
Read moreWe were very excited about trying Goode seafood restaurant because the Mexican & BBQ restaurants were so good. But by the end of our meal we were not impressed. For our appetizer we had the Seafood Campechana, which was ok, the pictures make it look huge but the glass ice cream bowl is very slim below the over stuffed top making it seem like a huge appetizer. But once you start eating you run out quickly. Don't share with anyone else because you need one per each person at $19.00 each.
For our entre, my wife had grilled Golden Tile fish and it had zero flavor, zero seasoning, just grilled for $28.00. I had the crab pasta and it was ok, very little lump crab meat for $28.00. The mesquite grilled fish pictures show grilled shrimp on the plate but to get the 4 grilled shrimp it costs $15.00 extra, bringing the total of the meal to $43.00
Onion Rings were very good and the garlic bread was good. We were very interested in the Seafood Rice but very disappointed when we tasted it. It was dry, very little flavor and very little seafood for $6.00 for a half cup. For $6.00 I could cook a whole pot of Jasmine rice and add 1/4 lb of shrimp and flavor everything much better than what we ate. When we went to Goode Mexican restaurant, we were impressed with everything we ate and couldn't wait to go back. We also loved the BBQ at Goode BBQ, but Goode Seafood, Naw, Nope, Never Again! Spent $102.00 for a meal for our birthdays and they don't even give a small dessert like Pappa's Seafood Restaurant which is so much better by far.
We rarely go out to dinner and feel terrible about spending that much money on food when we choose a restaurant of this quality, but we feel that we wasted our money Saturday night. We reqret not choosing Pappa's Seafood Restaurant or Acme Oyster House for our birthday...
