Unfortunately not what we were looking for for our anniversary. Nina was great and the service was good but the intense COVID protocols ruined any chance of the restaurant having a romantic setting. Sitting in a plastic box is not romantic or visually appealing. Not faulting the restaurant for wanting to be safe, just wish I knew about this beforehand and visited at a time when the walls between tables were not there. On top of this it was Woodstock night, something that was completely unexpected. As a fan of Woodstock I didn't mind but my wife did not appreciate the projectors, music, and theme further taking away from any potential romantic atmosphere. As for the food, it was good but not worth the $95 price tag in my opinion. If my wife didn't let me finish her dishes, I would have probably left still hungry. I figured with the shortened tasting menu that the portions would be larger but this was not really the case. I'm not new to fine dining, I realize I'm not going to get a huge burger or something but when the courses are things like tomato soup, salmon, and steak I would expect a decent portion for that price since there weren't really premium ingredients involved. No truffle, foie gras, caviar, lobster, etc. to be found. I'm also not sure why I'm being served hot soup in July (but maybe that's just a personal preference.) There were also just some unfortunate things that were NOT the restaurant's fault at all like my wife hating maple syrup and the cheese course being covered in it and us both hating blue cheese and the steak had a blue cheese sauce (neither mentioned on the menu but again, not at all blaming the restaurant for this; it's just a taste preference thing.) I really do think I would have loved this place before or after Covid but right now the atmosphere and current menu just aren't for me. Food was beautiful and...
Read moreThere's something mystical about Goosefoot. A salad with naturally sweet-tart dried fruit, frisee, gorgonzola and impossibly succulent fresh picked grapes, green and purple, in the middle of a January pandemic no less, confuses the senses like a Las Vegas stage illusion. After trying to figure out how they made the semi-trailer truck disappear and turn into a lion, you eventually give yourself over to the magic. A subtle vinaigrette heightens the garden-fresh greens, without upstaging them. Each element balances the other.
Chicken Francese, a take-home selection, delights with a lighter than air butter sauce, and just-pickled capers. The flesh on the chicken is delicate and melts in your mouth before disappearing. Cherry tomatoes are ever so delicately blanched to trigger a surprising burst in the mouth, with skins that float into the fly space of the palate. Whipped potatoes are featherweight and hearty-- a magic trick of their own. A chocolate torte marries chocolate frosting and cake in layers, each one bowing in deference to the other, with a drizzled raspberry sauce that went through a score of chinoises.
The star of the show is the wine list. The Macon LaRoche Vaneuse accompanies the lemon chicken, note for note, with a bold full body, without the dreaded "mineral" credit. Light, layered, and with subtle nuances, just like the entire meal. Who is stage managing this show and calling the shots of these...
