Woke up feeling like sushi, and decided it was time to try omakase as I've been want for some time. Looked up best omakase in northern NJ and DOMODOMO kept popping up. Funnily enough we had been looking for sushi in this general area earlier in the year and I had marked this as a place I wanted to try based on other reviews and the atmosphere of the restaurant. So it was decided, a nice Sunday night dinner here. I opted for the DOMOKASE, which was a stellar choice and well worth the price, albeit not a traditional take on omakase (so in my opinion I still haven't had a true omakase experience yet). The spicy tuna cone is probably one of my favorite takes on a spicy tuna roll I've ever had. The truffle oil is a special surprise and really hits a home run. But I think my favorite of the entire experience was the miso black cod in a mindblowingly good kabocha puree. I'm not kidding when I say I was grinning extremely happily eating this puree. Pure euphoria. The mustard vin on the side salad was beautifully bright and zesty. Black sesame panna cotta was the choice for dessert and was delicious as well! If you come away with nothing else from this review though, it's that the miso black cod dish is a MUST. My wife got an order of the bacon fried rice and Korean fried chicken, both of which were incredible. Service was acceptable, but some attention to detail could be improved. As my wife waited for me to complete my 8 courses, she had finished her nigori and no one ever asked if she wanted something else. I too, had finished my beer, and saw our waitress look at our table (with my empty beer glass) and continue to walk on, I had to flag her down the next time I saw her to ask myself for another. All in all that's about the only issue we had and truly enjoyed our evening here, hope...
Read moreI’d heard raving reviews of this place and finally had the chance to go last night. Perhaps if I’d gone with lower expectations, my impression would have differed.
Seating We’d booked seating for omakase, which was at the sushi counter. If you’re sitting at the end by the wall or even the seats next to it, you don’t have people walking behind you and can enjoy your meal in peace. We were however seated on the other side by the pathway, with customers and even servers constantly walking right behind us and bumping into the backs of our chairs.
Service The staff at the reception was friendly and welcoming. Our experience with the server was a bit odd—we ordered food and drinks, but at the end of our order, she asked if we’d like anything to drink. They also never came around to refill our water without our asking.
Omakase We both ordered the Sushi Omakase ($69+), which comes with: Seasonal oyster Spicy tuna cone Chef’s choice premium sushi (10 pieces) Choice of 1 hand roll Choice of 1 dessert For omakase in the city (& surrounds), this was very reasonably priced. We also ordered miso soup ($3+ each). The chef at the counter was not a sushi chef per se and also with the music, it was quite difficult to understand what each sushi and topping were—would’ve been nice to have a list. Overall, the quality of the fish was good—especially the uni, which just melted in my mouth. Some of the toppings were a bit overpowering, though, and not my favorite combination with quality sushi, like pesto or chili oil. The fish in the hand roll was also too cold, like it’d been frozen.
As long as expectations are managed and you’re able to sit at a table with less foot traffic, it could be a nice date spot or for dining with family and/or friends in...
Read moreTerrible service!!! This is my third visit to domodomo. Their service has been getting worse lately.
When I entered, there was clearly someone standing at the front desk, but no one greeted me until I told them I need a table. And I told the front desk THREE TIMES that I wasn't together with the other group of Asians who were waiting at the entrance. The front desk still called me when their table's reday. Do you guys feel all Asians look the same???? When we were ordering, we used the omakase menu, but the waitress said it was the wrong one and we should use the dinner menu. Then she LEFT IMMEDIATELY. But we hadn't finished ordering yet!!! We had to call her back in just a minite. It felt like she thought we didn't understand English, and we'd use a long time to look at the menu which seemed to waste her time a lot.
When the dishes arrived, out of the 5 sushi pieces my friend ordered, 3 were wrong. We noticed it immdediately as those 3 were raw fish as my friend doesn't even eat raw fish. The uni sushi was so fishy that I almost threw up, and my friend said his uni udon was also fishy.
We ran out of water, and for more than ten minutes, no one came to refill it. The bottle of sparkling water also finished, but no one asked if we wanted another one for long.
My first visit to domo was very good. The second time, we had ice cream with a slightly spoiled side, which tasted sour, but at least they had a good attitude and replaced it. This time, it was almost the worst dining experience we've had in Jersey, without a doubt. We spent over EIGHTY dollars per person and suffered.
Will never go...
