Here's the thing: I've eaten here 6 or 7 times since it opened. While the food is good and sometimes very good (+1 star), and the service from the wait staff has been between acceptable and good (+1 star), there are things that completely turn me off when experienced, enough so to write this review. I'll offer three key suggestions to the management team and/or owners to achieve 3 more stars, or risk being dropped to 1 star and lose not only my business, but the business of my colleagues, whom I frequently compel into dining here, even though it is farther out of the way than other establishments.
Allow your clients to place an order over the phone and pick-up food, or risk losing local patrons. I was happy to prepay in advance to ensure you cover your costs, yet was told I had to come in to place an order. It sounds to me like an old Taqueria Downtown rule made its way to Los Cuernos, the same rule that led me to boycott the original location for almost 11 years living in Jersey City. This leads me to suggestion #2.
When the same patron whom you told to come in because you don't accept orders over the phone does actually come in and wants to buy 10 oz of salsa in his own container that he brought, try not mocking him for being a conscientious individual who doesn't want to see another piece of plastic used for something he can transport on his own. We do, after all, have a plastic bag ban in Jersey City; don't you think that there are other ways to help? And then there's item #3.
For the same patron who seems silly for bringing his own container, jacking the price up to $20 for 10 oz. of salsa ($2 per ounce) is not only totally unnecessary, it is in and of itself reason enough to not ever frequent your establishment again. I can buy twice the volume of salsa for half the price at Charrito's and it's just s enjoyable, if not superior to yours.
Please make note of the above for future guests, as we all have plenty of places to eat in Jersey City. If you're fortunate, you may see me stop by for lunch in the next few weeks, and if you do, consider settling my grievance kindly and diplomatically, rather than egregiously trying to overcharge one of your new regulars for something it probably costs less...
Read moreThe most terrible experience I ever had. Would be surprised if this place stay open long enough. The ambiance was really good, but the service equally pathetic.
Went there hoping that the place is new and would get a good service. Wait till they cheat you on the end. We ordered there Chicken enchilada and told them we dont eat pork. The waiter said she can remove the beans from the enchilada (said it had pork in it) and will replace it with a side of Veg beans. One of my friend was vegetarian and ordered flautas. The food was ok, but seemed overly priced.
We were shocked to see the bill at the end. They charged $8 extra for the side of the Veg beans (ordered 2 enchiladas) and $4 for Veg rice, which she replaced for Mexican rice (has chicken broth in it) that comes with flautas. We were not even informed about it. The waiter took her call and just ordered it on our behalf.
Also, we did ask for an extra salsa apart from the complimentary chips and salsa they provide, she told us that would be an $1 which we said we are fine with. But after some time, she replaced the chips bowl (ours had still some left and we didnt ask for any more) making us think it would be complimentary, but then she added extra $2.5 for the chips and salsa in the bill.
When asked for clarification, she started making stories and asked us if we want to talk to the manager, and when we said yes, she came back saying he is busy with something and would be there in about 10 to 15 mins (by this time we were not surprised with the terrible service).
The problem was not getting charged extra for every little replacement, wish they told us before. The only disclaimer we were given was for $1 extra for salsa.
These guys are a big CHEAT, dont waste you time and money, and also your appetite for a place like this.
Would rather starve then...
Read moreThis Mexican venue has all the flare, flavor and service without overwhelming your wallet. When in Jersey City, this is where you want to dine to enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine. ... My wife & I were staying at the Westin nearby and as we were deciding where to go for dinner, we discovered this place (on Google of course!).
We walked over despite the misty cool rain, and we were able to get a seat very quickly. The entrance isn't super fancy, but once inside, it appears quite luxurious. To the right was the bar with a big screen, showing the upcoming contenders of the next kick-boxing match on Pay-Per-View.
Our host walked us the opposite direction to the dining space where many clean and simple wooden tables and chairs awaited hungry diners in groups of 2 or 4. We were seated at a comfy 2-top and quickly given a bowl of salsa with their homemade chips in a simple woven basket with a parchment between the chips and the basket.
We had already looked at the menu (again, on Google), so we went ahead and ordered our choices: Chicken Flautas and Bistec a la Tampiquena. Both were very nicely presented and they tasted so good! We weren't sure if that would fill us up, but with the Chips & Salsa, it was perfect, with a few leftovers to munch on later.
Our waiter was diligent in taking our order, providing beverages (we just went with water with lime) and getting it all to us quickly and tastefully. ¡Muy Bien!
We enjoyed the environment as painted bamboo stalks for a quad-pic of Frida Kahlo looked down on us. The only strange thing was that it wasn't Mexican music playing over the speakers: it was 1960-70s songs from the likes of Elton John, Terry Jacks, and Rupert Holmes, and only 1 song that was replete with Latino musica. But because the food was so tasty, it was actually pleasant. I would definitely...
