Let me start by saying, it hurts to give this place 2 stars, but it feels necessary. We had very high hopes for this place, and wish the whole experience would have been a lot better. We came in for breakfast around 9:45. The cafe was understandably busy, but we got seated right away. This is when things started to go downhill. After about 15 minutes, we were finally greeted by our waitress. She got our drink orders in, and we did not see her for another 15 minutes. She came back to put our food order in, still no drinks. Mind you, this place is all open air and gets pretty toasty on a July morning. Another 15 minutes go by, the waitress finally brings us our drinks. I ordered a spiked coffee and could barely drink it as it tasted like it had been sitting on the bar for a long while. (Iced coffee and milk don't pair well with the Key West heat). As we are waiting on our food, two separate parties get seated near us. Waiting...... Waiting...... Waiting...... The other two parties get drinks, and it is important to note are being served by the same waitress. Waiting...... We mention to our waitress it has been quite a while, and she tells us she is going to check on our order. She returns shortly only to give us a big thumbs up. We guess it is coming out shortly. (Lie number one). Waiting..... The other two parties receive their food orders! My husband then flags down another employee to ask for the manager. At this point we had been at this restaurant for a solid hour. We also had reservations for a jet ski tour at noon, and at this point we just wanted to know if we were going to get food at all. The employee my husband flagged down turned out to be the owner. We explained the situation, and she immediately went to the kitchen to check on things. Waiting..... Our waitress comes out to tell us that "somehow there was a mistake and the order didn't get put in right" (Lie number 2). Waiting.... The owner returns to tell us her waitress actually NEVER put in the order, and that they are pushing our food to the front right away. She also tell us breakfast is on her and that we would not be paying for our meal. We were very appreciative of this and felt that the owner really tried to make it right, however after our waitress' multiple lies, we were really frustrated. We received our VERY simple order at around 11:20, 1 hour and 20 minutes after it was put in. The food was actually really good. The breakfast croissant was tasty with the croissant being perfectly flaky. The house potatoes were yummy with a great house sauce to dip them in. If this had been the end of the fiasco, our review would not be as low. Unfortunately, the waitress from hell continued to badger us with annoying excessive apologies and would not leave us alone to eat!!! She was very handsy, which was not welcome after her lies and the frustrating wait in the hot and humid weather. Then to top it off, the waitress still tried to take our card to pay!!!!!! The owner luckily came by and put a stop to that and again said we were not paying for breakfast due to the mistakes made. We really had high hopes for this place. I don't know if I would swear it off forever, but the experience really...
Read moreMy rating is purely based on service. I come to Key West often and this was my first time coming to Banana Cafe very close to the beach which makes it convenient. However, service was horrible, which I noticed was only directed to us. My waitress dropped silverware down the back of my dress, she apologized but it was insincere and she kept moving. We never got water, which I politely asked for. It just seemed like we were unwelcome here. I got one round of coffee and I wanted another but I was ready to go. While. The food is ok, the experience was not welcoming, definitely felt unwelcome. Our waitress seemed to smile and laugh with other guest but not us. It was like hurry up and leave! Oh and lastly, everyone had hand sanitizer except out table and also didn't give us out exact change back for a large bill. The waitress said they don't give back small change, it's too small. Not saying discrimination but definitely did not want us in their establishment. The experience was horrible. They collecting a lot a whole lot of change is all I'm saying. The experience got worse as time went on, don't patronize this place. Non accommodating, insincere and it's just not...
Read moreThey had a black face figurine up on the wall and when I brought it to the bartender attention he said I don’t control the decor. I said you know that’s offensive to anyone right not just black people he sulked over and actually put the item in the trash. Which was good that is where it belonged but what’s with the attitude when identifying your racist items in your restaurant. That thing has probably been up for years and will probably be pulled out of the trash and put back up. Oooh and regards to the food I didn’t have any because I was sitting at the bar and saw them preparing their breakfast potatoes on a crate on the floor and decided that wasn’t sanitary conditions. We did have coffee which was weak and I had the blackberry mimosa which was watered down I don’t recommend anything there. When all this exchange went down and I said hey I’m not comfortable with this here and was going to leave he said get out of here. Yea if you are black or even care about how people of other races are treated...
