Abbondanza Italian Restaurant — Restaurant in Key West

Went here at the recommendation of a friend who lives in Key West. Warm atmosphere and fairly busy on a Friday evening, but we got a table with no wait. We ordered a fried calamari appetizer which came out very quickly. It was good, with just a light chewyness, so not as tender as we have had, but tasty. The red dipping sauce was not liked by any of us as it had a somewhat bitter flavor and powerful aftertaste. I had ordered the Linquini with clams in a white sauce. The linguini was a proper aldonte and the clams tasted good, but the white sauce was way too watery with minimal flavor. My wife ordered a shrimp over pesto linguini. The shrimp was nicely prepared but the pesto pasta was way too strong in flavor making it difficult to finish. My son ordered the lasagna which had a lot of meat (beef and Pork mix). It too had the same red sauce we received with the calamari which was a bit disappointing. He liked it in any case but I was not thrilled. The staff was friendly and accommodating but we thought the food was average at best. If you need an off the Duval street quieter dinner, the setting works well. One of the worst experiences I’ve ever had at a restaurant. We came around 6:30pm with our 3 year old and immediately I felt like we were not being welcomed solely on the fact that we had a child at this establishment which is a pretty terrible feeling. Our waitress gave me an attitude because I didn’t want to order a drink off the cocktail menu (my husband did and it was disgusting so I’m glad I didn’t). I asked for a salad for my dinner and she clearly wanted me to order an entree instead because she said “that’s all you’re ordering?” On several occasions. Then when my salad came I had a long hair in it so I sent it back. My husband ordered lasagna and you could tell it was old and not made well because the texture was wicked mushy and had no flavor. The wait staff kept staring at us shamefully and we felt so uncomfortable that we left 20 minutes into dinner. I will never go back to this place even if I don’t have a child with me and I would not recommend it to anyone I know. Disgusting behavior. Visited 12/28/22 at around 6:30pm. Food was ok, nothing great, but our waitress was very rude. Rarely checked on us and I had to go find her. I told her we had been waiting 30 minutes on our check (we had planned to order a dessert, but she was nowhere around) She told me that she seriously doubted it had been 30 mins. (My daughter had texted me 26 mins ago since we had seen our waitress, so I had a time to go by) Also she mumbled something under her breath and my husband called her out on it which made her want to argue with us. I also believe she prejudged us as we had been walking all day and in our street clothes, because she was VERY attentive to the ones dressed up for the evening. I would not recommend this place if you travel the distance to Key West! So many better places with friendly fun staff than this place! Atmosphere there is great with candle light & pillows in booths which is hiw they try to capture you, but it’s all downhill from there.
