Hubby brought me here on a surprise impromptu date night, so I didn't really know what to expect. I was very pleased with my meal at 1228 Main. There are some issues, but this restaurant does a lot really well.
The menu is very limited, and there are little to no vegetarian / vegan options. This really shocked me, especially for a restaurant in the Arts District. I'm unsure if the chef would be willing to accommodate, but it seemed like the type of place that you'd be told "no" if you wanted to modify something to be meatless. Minus a star for limited veggie options.
Another thing I didn't like was the overall atmosphere. It's a working bakery and kitchen, which means there was a never-ending clatter from the kitchen as well as the distracting smell of bread baking. Both kitchens were also producing a lot of heat, and the restaurant was uncomfortably warm. I was not cool and relaxed, and they are in desperate need of better air conditioning. I cannot imaging how horrid the summer months must get, and I will be sure to avoid dining here during that time.
I also found the service to be lacking. It wasn't unprofessional, but I would call it inattentive. For a nicer, chef-driven restaurant, I expect far, far better service. My water glass shouldn't be empty, and I would appreciate a server at least checking in on my within 5 minutes after my meal is served. Our waiter dropped our food and never returned, leading to us having to repeatedly try to flag down anyone to bring us water since we were desperate for a drink!
Now on to the good! The food was so fresh and tasty. While the menu didn't offer detailed enough descriptions, I was happy with what I ordered. We shared a shrimp appetizer that was beautifully fried and presented, and the portion was large (actually, I'd say it was too large) for two people. I'd only order this again if we had one or more friends with us. The shrimp quality was exceptional, and the flavors were on point.
Next up was the bread service with butter. Get this. It features whatever fresh breads they've made recently, and it was so good. I actually wish this was larger, I needed more bread slices! Our server gladly brought us extra butter for no additional charge, which I appreciated.
For our entrees, hubby got the steak and I got the shrimp pasta. He said the steak was good, but not great. My dish was excellent. I loved the fresh flavors and the sweet peas added so much to the buttery sauce. We both had leftovers and agreed that the dishes reheated so well that they tasted almost as good as they did the night before!
I was pleased with how reasonably priced the wine list was! I got a quality glass of sparkling wine for $14, and he got a special pickle juice cocktail for under $20. The cocktail was laughably small, but they didn't skimp on liquor or flavors. The wine list and cocktail list are incredibly well curated.
The dining room was surprisingly empty at 6:30 on a Saturday night. It was very easy to secure a reservation at the last minute. I hope that's not forecasting a bad time ahead for this restaurant. Eventually a few tables started to fill in, but it was far from packed on a weekend night.
Despite a few bumps in the road, I will recommend 1228 Main and will be sure to return. I don't think it's destined to be a personal favorite of mine, but I will add it to our local...
Read moreWe went to 1228 Main to grab some breakfast. This place is located in DTLV, and (like its name) on 1228 Main Street, next to Velveteen Rabbit. It opened not long ago, and we were excited to try it. Trust me, it did not disappoint.
This chic and rustic venue puts a spotlight on one of life’s simple pleasures: fresh, crusty bread. They serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even late-night cocktails, so something for everyone at any time of day.
Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by an expansive and chic space that exudes a modern yet welcoming atmosphere, with a breakfast counter, an open kitchen, an in-house bakery, and a stylish bar area.
The bakery counter is a feast for the eyes, filled with an array of delicious-looking pastries that tempt you as soon as you walk in. From flaky croissants to Swiss bread danish, pain au chocolat and more, there’s a treat to satisfy every sweet tooth. The aroma of freshly baked bread fills the air, drawing attention to the stacks of floury loaves sitting on wall-mounted shelves, waiting to be enjoyed. I bought 2 loafs to take home with me.
But 1228 Main is not just about the bakery. The restaurant offers a diverse menu, we went there for breakfast and ordered the Toasted Ciabatta with strawberry jam, creamy goat cheese, pickled strawberries, and basil. And also enjoyed the Multi Seed Rye, fresh avocado toast with green chile cream cheese, and crispy leeks. Wow both unbelievably delicious.
The team of friendly and lovely individuals that work at 1228, go above and beyond to create an inviting and enjoyable atmosphere that definitely made us want to come back and tell our friends.
So go try this new and exciting addition to downtown Las Vegas, for the extraordinary dining experience and the fresh, crusty bread. With its chic space combined with the friendly and attentive staff plus delicious food, 1228 Main is a must-visit...
Read moreI've been to 1228 with my wife many times, and they never disappoint. Breakfast, brunch, dinner, it's all amazing.
I'm leaving this review after our first dinner experience, all I have to say is WOW. We shared the Caesar salad, it was incredible. Their Caesar dressing had the absolute perfect amount of lemon that made it tangy and refreshing on this summer day. My wife had the 1228 Chicken Pot pie, I had the NY Strip steak for the entree.... Incredible. The pot pie puff pastry was a work of art and just melted in your mouth. The STEAK was ordered as a medium, but cooked as a perfect medium rare. (I assumed this would be an establishment that would hit their Medium Rare at an internal of 138-140 instead of the traditional 145, it just has that vibe that they know what they're doing in the kitchen.) This strip had the greatest sear and seasoning I've ever had on a piece of meat. My wife and I were blown away as I shared with her. The bearnaise was a wonderful side, and accompanied the steak and it's salty french fry companions to the greatest extent.
Now after all that we just ate, being extremely full. We could not get the menu item we saw earlier, that being the Dark Chocolate Cake... We ordered a slice of the Cake, and I paired that will their Temparnillo.... Woah. I've never experienced a chocolate cake as moist and decadent as what they served, and the wine along with it... It was truly an experience. I will continue to come back to 1228 and make sure to bring my family and friends. The service is always great, the ambiance superb, and the meal leaving you satisfied each time. The art district in Vegas is up and coming, and 1228 is the...
