I rarely find an oxtail dish that I don’t like, which leads me to think that when you hear “best oxtail” you are in for a treat. Lets hold our oxes just a minute and discuss the cuisine of these dishes. Jamaican, Vietnamese, Filipino, African, Hawaiian. Not a single one similar to any other. Not a single reviewer even mentions the varieties.
The oxtail served here is a late-night graveyard dish usually on Fridays after 11pm. That is when I came. It makes no mention of style, just accoutrements. When you look at the menu being decidedly Hawaiian you sort of assume that if it’s not specific this is the default and it is. Compare it to the curry styles or the African style or Filipino kare kare and this doesn’t hold a candle to them. This is not bad, in any way, but it is it’s own thing. A latenight broth. It’s clean, on the clear side, salted, but not rich in umami which makes me think it’s made separate from the likely parboiling of the oxtail. Carrots, celery were floating, but I didn’t get the usual mirepoix most beef stocks start with, lacked depth. Sure the cilantro and ginger helped, but they were merely aromatics and not flavor enhancers. The tail chunks were huge, meaty, fall off the bone, no gaminess. It’s messy, but to clean them you gotta get in there. Rather than do rice I saw someone order a side of ramen, that would be better if there was more soup, I’ll try that next time.
Philippine Breakfast was blah, tocino only, no longanisa, sunny side egg was good, rice was good, but not GFR. No tomatoes or basically anything else. The bacon side was huge, the sausage side was portugese and not Filipino or American, though it was clean profile.
Steak & Eggs were hit and miss, 2 medium rare’s and 1 was cooked correctly, the other medium well-well. That got sent back. I understand it’s harder with these thin steaks, but we know it can be done. Even the correctly cooked one was a little tough. Eggs were good. Sour dough bread was ok, even better with a heavy spread of butter. Their latenight side offerings are limited and they don’t readily substitute/accommodate.
Service is ok, they only serve alcohol from a casino server so that takes time. The service is usually packed at night and they are a little understaffed making refills an issue. Décor is meh, seats are not uncomfortable, smaller party sizes generally get seated faster or try the counter. Lots of people get theirs to go.
It’s an ok spot with some good dishes, but certainly not the best Hawaiian food, Oxtail or service around. I’ll give them the latenight and large menu, but if your most famous dish is that inconsistent and mediocre I gotta be just real close, late and real hungry. I’d recommend to anyone wanted lots of oxtail meat in a broth, not a stew that isn’t Jamaican, African, Filipino or Vietnamese because it’s good Hawaiian oxtail, but wouldn’t last in richer seas. If you want Hawaiian food and it’s before 3pm you are better off going to Aloha Kitchen...
Read moreEXTREMELY disappointed. We read these Google reviews and Facebook reviews, based on these Google reviews this place is 4.5 Star Rating… We’ve been bamboozled!! BAMBOOZLED! Honestly speaking! We were a party of 7, visited there on Saturday night (06/19/21) around 7:30ish. It was packed, we waited over 45 mins, but based on such good reviews, we anticipated it would be worth the wait! We finally sat down, and then waited another good 20-25 minutes before our orders were taken. Elena, our drink server was very attentive, she immediately served our beverages and kept our drinks filled. After finally receiving our dishes, I have to say we were extremely disappointed… the food was utterly horrible. I ordered the Butterfish, and without exaggeration, I would say it had to of been recycled from the night before, just microwaved, and it was STILL cold; two persons from our party ordered the famous Oxtail Soup – both were disappointing, but the one was served with just a gigantic clump of fat, there wasn’t an ounce of meat on it; another person ordered the Teriyaki Chicken, a frozen microwaved dinner from the grocery store would have been more impressive; two other persons in our group ordered the Fried Shrimp and Fish & Chips, Gordon’s Frozen Seafood - Crispy Battered Fish taste better than what they had… the oil had to of been old. I can tell you, not one of us finished our meal or even halfway finished through it. The joke of the evening was we felt we were in one of those reality shows like Kitchen Nightmares waiting for Chef Ramsey to come out and say “How **ing depressing is that?”. I am sorry to give such a bad review, but for the money we paid and these Google reviews, we have to speak up. We should have taken pictures to show evidence. We do not...
Read moreDon’t let the place/decor fool you. Older crowd. But so nice and quiet. No cigarettes smell. You might even want to walk away to head to Redwood. Do not. I’m telling you. Try the prime rib. We are huge meat eaters and this place is exceptional.
Prime rib (what they are well known for) so of course we had to try it out. Brought my family of 9 out here. It was 5:30. We only waited about 6 minutes for them to set up seating and our table. No reservations. First come. 18.99 for a nice thick piece of prime rib - cooked to a medium rare to perfection. I mean absolute perfection! It comes with au jus and horseradish. The outer fat cap was seasoned very well and absolutely delicious. We know our meat and this was well worth the trip out there. If you want a huge piece of prime rib for a very good price. Try here. Cherry jubilee at the end was delicious and big enough for two people to share since only 5 of us got the prime rib (cherry jubilee comes with it). Cal Cut Prime Rib” which they label as the “Juiciest Prime Rib in Town”. It is VERY true. The meal comes with a house salad, and choice of steamed rice, baked potato, mashed potatoes, or fries and a fresh vegetable. Spare ribs were equally delicious and sadly we didn’t get to try the oxtail because they serve it after 9pm. But there was so much prime rib I could barely finish and I ALWAYS finish my meat.
We ordered alcohol but they get that from the casino so that was an extra price. For three wines and a mule. It was $24. They were the small plastic cups full. Still the Cab paired well with the prime rib.
total for our party of 9 - $237 including the 20% tip
Totally worth it. We will be bringing...
