James Republic has a complete modern feel about it, a popular Long Beach restaurant in my opinion. From the time you notice the place, from the outside corner, as you approach the beautiful greeters, you already know its gonna have that certain class of style inside. You will notice the modern decor (if you are into that look) and also a welcoming rustic presence... at least that's what I got from it.
With so many gems hidden around Long Beach you can definitely say, James Republic is one of them. If you are a LB Local, Im sure you've heard of "James Republic". There a reason why you heard of it. If you haven't been there, I recommend you check it out.
I came in for brunch with a few friends, ordered a delicious meal and consumed a few Bloody Mary's, beers and mimosas. They have beers on tap as well as bottled and a full bar. When you throw back your cocktail you won't feel ripped off, thats for sure. I have to taste some alcohol in my cocktails to feel satisfied for what a bar can charge these days.
I took down the brunch burger too fast with no problem. I have to say, it was pretty damn fantastic! I should have enjoyed my meal. But it was brunch! I was friggin starved! I recommend that one, the brunch burger. I don't recommend starving yourself before hand though. I normally take pictures of a menu. I forgot this time. They also have vegetarian options as well. Probably vegan too, if I'm not mistaken. Hey, Its Long Beach! They better!
They can accommodate large groups as well from what I saw when I was there. It looked like a party of about 14 people celebrating a birthday brunch.
The wait staff was on its game and amazing. As they should be. Looks like a nice place to work. Keep it classy James Republic....
Read moreAn awesome new addition to downtown Long Beach. I've been twice in one week and both times have been great. I love the gorgeous open layout of the place--it's perfect for summer dining. It's modern and sophisticated but casual, and the service is very good. Both times I'd gotten there around 6:30ish for an early dinner and it wasn't a problem to get a table. Here are the list of items I've tried so far:
SEAFOOD CEVICHE (spicy tomato broth, grilled bread) - fresh, light and tangy! PACIFIC MUSSELS (shishito peppers, lemongrass, tomato & basil) - kind of spicy, I liked! HOUSE BLEND GRASS FED BURGER (fiscalini white cheddar, fancy sauce, house pickled veg) - very good, but the bread was a smidge dry ANSON MILLS POLENTA (bellwether fromage blanc) - great texture but a little bland; added some salt and it was perfect POMME FRITES (garlic, jalepeno, rosemary, malt vinegar aioli) - perfectly crispy! GRILLED CAULIFLOWER STEAK (red quinoa, almonds, blistered tomato, fines herbs, blood orange reduction) - the most surprising dish of all; I usually don't like this kind of stuff but it was damn good Sticky Toffee Pudding, aged rum ice cream (oh, droooool, so good!) Cali-Belgique beer from Stone Brewery (great summer beer)
Everything is supposed to be locally sourced and organic, so that's a plus, and the prices are quite reasonable! I think this may be one of my most fave restaurants in Long Beach now. I totally want to try them for breakfast and lunch as well to see how they...
Read moreI was expecting so much more. I really had very very high expectations of this place. Ill break down my whole dining experience.
Service sucks...ok so I was the Mexican guy with flip flops and shorts so maybe I should give them a pass for thinking I'm not a good tipper or whatever because they were clearly servicing the nice white couple at the table next to me superbly.
I started off with two appetizers. The oysters and tuna poke. The oysters were awrful. I LOVE OYSTERS. These tasted like saltwater and mush. The tuna poke was whack. The fish was chewy and didn't taste fresh.
I ordered an Old Fashioned and my date ordered a sangria...no complaints...just expensive. I did have to flag down the server several times every time I wanted to order something.
I ordered the octopus while my date ordered the steak. The octopus was on point no complaints. It was delicious. The steak on the other hand was a disaster. My date and I left half of it there and this steak was $30. It was beyond chewy I thought I was going to bust a molar on the steak.
I walked away spending almost exactly $200 with tip. I could have eaten at Super Mex down the street and had better food and walked away spending $50
I am never ever going to this place again Huge disappointment and massive waste of money.
I don't mind spending money. I don't mind dropping 2 bills for a meal I just ask in return that its amazing I would have been unhappy paying $50...
