I lived and operated a restaurant on the Beach until I chose to move on to bigger and better things, and I know that during the ‘tourist’ months, things can be a bit hectic, but we were all incentivized by the increased prices we can charge those tourists during that time. So while revisiting the beach with my family, I thought we’d visit the and support the local small shops. I wasn’t completely shocked by charging $13 for a large cup of chowder but it better had been the best chowder in at least a block. It wasn’t, although creamy and with good consistency, it was bland. My son asked for a side of fries with his chowder, but apparently it’s “too busy” for you to be able to charge people for fries since it wasn’t on your dry-erase menu board, even though you were flinging them out with the fish and chips. Sure, $16 for an order of F&C is a bit on the high side for a decent product, but after spending $45 on 3 meals w/out any drinks, please don’t come at me when my mother (an adored local) brings her fresh taco from the neighboring business and eats with her grandkids at our table. Your excuse of “it’s against health codes” after we have finished eating is a mood killer. It’s Sunday for criminy, just when was it that a health inspector did swing by, cuz I’m sure there were a handful of other things they would have been more concerning. I get you had limited spacing, but her joining us didn’t use up any other seats. Your comments have assured me that I won’t be back and to send other’s to buy a decent chowder at Dooger’s or for a real treat get a chowder in a fresh bread bowl (instead of a disposable cup) from the Cottage Bakery less than a block away...
Read moreUpon entry into this little establishment lady who was standing right in front of us didn’t even acknowledge our existence. We must have inconvenienced her time of cleaning napkin holders. 3 tables inside cash register and a kitchen all in the same room. We opted to eat there yes and ate outside as it was a pretty day. Ordered their version of clam chowder; my version of potato soup. NOT one clam was in my 8 oz bowl. Yes I said not one!! Shrimp cocktail was a very large portion due to the amount of lettuce that made it look large. Sister ordered the combo cod chowder fries. Again chowder was potato soup. Her saving grace was removing the 2” thick panko breading off her cod and adding the cod to her potato soup. The fries literally dripping with oil couldn’t eat those. So for $40+ and their version of “clam chowder “ I could save $35 and just buy a can of soup.
Lol I saw your response and after looking back through years of reviews your potato soup never got better. I actually forgot to mention the first bite was like tasting roux gritty flour mixed in grease not cooked down enough so much for your claim to be gluten free if you are your definitely using something else and obviously it needs improvement. The fries I also see never got better. There were no clams at all. The extra shrimp? Are you serious? If that was extra shrimp I can’t imagine what the actual portion would be. Too bad we paid cash but I doubt with your attitude you would had refunded our money anyways. You should be ashamed of yourself coming on here with such a rude attitude and rebuttal that you can’t back it up your review history...
Read moreBest of the Peninsula. There are three "tourist" things everyone needs to do while on the beach. 1) Fly a kite on the beach 2) Go see Jake at Marsh's and 3) while your at Marsh's eat at Captain Bob's.
I hope you can handle the first two but let me help you with the third. Captain Bob usually has three chowders going a day and deciding which is not easy. After you have had your samples of each the decision will not get easier but you won't be wrong no matter what you do. Just an FYI all the chowders are gluten and soy free all the time and made with what ever the captain can find fresh. Now the soup is what got you in the door but now you see the words "crab roll" yes it is as good as a lobster roll and you won't be disappointed in the least, Bob is not shy with the crab. Now lets talk about the fish and chips. You saw it it and you said "I can get that anywhere" or "Seems like a high price for 2 fillets" well if you let that talk you out of ordering it you will be filled with regret my friend. Captain Bob knows who the star of the show is and the fish wins all. It is lightly breaded right then and there and fried until flaky and light. The crust is thin and the fish is large. Take that and stack it on large cut fries, some tarter and coleslaw and you have a meal so large you will have to share if you plan on eating some chowder, which you are. If you want the best don't waste your time in lines or which waiters go see the captain and he will show you...
