To have a place where the menu starts off with vegetarian options is quite unusual, but if anywhere can do it, it would be a South Asian food place, and Himal Chuli, which is a Nepali restaurant, did just that. My friends and I ordered the veggie combo, which was basically a double meal of rice, tarkari, and dal, along with some momocha. As added measures, we ordered momo and samosas as well to give them a shot. For the tarkari, the vegetables did not contain enough seasoning but the juice tasted well with brown rice, so I had to pour a bit of juice into the rice and then eat the vegetables with the rice to make it taste the best. The dal, which was a mixed bean soup, was also slightly underseasoned, but tasted very well due to the original ingredient flavors. Both the momocha and the momo were excellent! Even though the menu said both would come with the tomato coriander sauce, we had a different kind of sauce for the momo, and we prefered it so we dipped both kinds of food in there instead of the tomato coriander sauce. I also had the lassi drink, which tasted like a spiced up version (not spicy but containing spices) of yogurt and milk, and I enjoyed it. The samosa was something I had never experienced before, served with yogurt sauce, which I had no issues with, but the skin was not really fully cooked and still felt dough-ey. However, the inside was perfect, and that mattered the most. Lastly, my friends and I had the vegan peda, which tasted as good as it could as a vegan dessert. We would have picked the peda if the restaurant didn't run out of it because it contained ricotta cheese and I knew it would have tasted amazing. Overall the food was very easy to eat and to digest, and I would recommend this place to anyone visiting Madison, WI looking for a...

My mother and I went looking for food we don't find very often, and we saw this place. We started with drinks: a Cinnamon Lassi and the Nepali Chiya. The Cinnamon Lassi was a thick, yogurt-smoothie kind of beverage that was still refreshing even while being as thick as it was. The Nepali Chiya is a tea, and my mother said it was good (that's all I can really say about it because I don't like tea, but even I tried a couple sips of it). For our actual meals, we ate Himal's Combination Platter (consisting of two Momochas, a Samosa, Roti, and a cup of Dal) and Lamb Sikar with Takari. The Momochas were doughy, which I didn't expect at first, but after the second bite, I decided I could eat them all day--but we were just getting warmed up. The Samosa we followed them with had a savory vegetarian paste encased in a crunchy shell and surrounded by a sweet and creamy sauce. A moment after taking a bite, a small amount of spice sizzled in our mouths, but it wasn't so much that it was uncomfortable. The combination of savory and sweet and spicy all formed one unexpected--but delicious--experience that I wish I had more of. The Lamb Sikar one-upped that even. The entire dish was so tender it melted like ice cream in my mouth, and the flavor was absolutely delightful. I would recommend Himal Chuli to anyone any time...

Last year I had a wonderful experience- food was great- staff friendly- they must have a different cook or something, I don't know- went there yesterday - food was very bland- no flavor- I might as well have ordered a glass of water- smaller portions for the same price- messed up two orders- after getting our tasteless food - at some point - this ugly heavily made up girl came over and asked us to hurry up and leave- we weren't there for very long- food still on plates- the waiter said he would separate the bill- instead we got one large bill with only prices listed- had to sort out whose meal cost what- - - then two very crabby old women at the check out who seemed annoyed that I was standing in there presence trying to pay that stupid bill- and I was stupid enough to leave a $10 tip which I'm sure they didn't give to the waiter- really wish I hadn't of taken my guest there- crappy experience- paid way too much money for worthless food- Himal Chuli- I don't know what's going on with your business- you were very rude- but it's okay- you don't have to worry about ever seeing my face in...

Really great spot for authentic Nepalese food. Easily walkable spot on State Street near plenty of parking. Located in a historic building, with an interior that hasn’t changed a bit in decades. The space is well used with tables shoved in every possible spot and bathrooms haphazardly built into the dining room. All that said, the experience is wonderful. The staff are friendly, attentive, and fast. Prices are fair and the menu has great options. Most of the food is not spicy, catering to the midwestern palate. The menu is mostly a la carte. There are daily Takaris, which are basically vegetable curries. The dal is a rotating soup. I opted for rice, cauliflower takari, and dal. The takari was delicious. It looks simple but packs a ton of flavor. The dal is wonderful, and is the kind of soup that seems like it could cure any illness. I also tried a bite of the other takari of the day and some of the momo. Everything rocked.
