Roanoke island market — Restaurant in Manteo

Roanoke Island Market is a great addition to the Manteo downtown area. The Poodles and Bob dog store has unique high-quality pet supplies, and the Freshfit Cafe outpost is a welcome addition to evening dining options on the island. Their sandwiches and bowls are, as the name suggests, made with fresh, healthy ingredients, and everything I have had from them has been delicious.

For me, though, the highlight of the market is Necy’s Baby Cakes. She has cakes, cupcakes, tarts, and whatever else she creates in a case by the front door. The strawberry cake made with fresh Currituck strawberries was incredible, the toffee cupcakes and chocolate/peanut butter cupcakes are moist and delicious, and the turtle cake was so good I ate the whole slice at a sitting, something I rarely do. Necy has been the go-to baker for most of us on Roanoke Island for years, and having her baked goods available all the time is a real treat.

All these businesses are welcome downtown, and having the three together makes it even better. I can order a sandwich and look over the pet supplies while I wait. I can finish off with something sweet from Necy for dessert (and get a couple more cupcakes to take with me). By the way, the little nook with the armchairs overlooking the water is so cozy and relaxing. My wife and I sat there and had dinner, and I didn’t want to leave. I hope that all three businesses get so busy that they have to take over other...
