The atmosphere does all of the heavy lifting at this place.
The hostess, though I’m sure a wonderful human being, has no clue how to do her job. She insisted they couldn’t seat us at 5pm, even though a party of four literally cancelled their reservation ahead of us and it would have been the perfect swap. She stated that this was because the restaurant was slammed even though it was basically empty and I was able to make a reservation directly on open table for 5:30pm.
My husband and I decided to hunker down at the bar for immediate service but couldn’t help but notice how inefficiently the hostess was running the stand. It got so bad that there was a line going outside the door when 80% of the restaurant was empty and there were several servers on the floor.
The poor bartender was very nice, but it’s kind of cruel to make one person make all of the cocktails for the entire restaurant.
The food was okay but they were out of HALF the dinner menu when we ordered. Keep in mind it was 5pm so that means dinner service literally just started.
Overall I would say grab a seat at the bar, order a beer (give the bartender a break and don’t order a cocktail) and just watch the sunset. For dinner I would recommend hitting up the local market and just grab a poke...
Read moreWe were fortunate to be staying at the royal lahaina on opening night of Lahaina noon. We felt so welcomed, the service was amazing. We sat down right before sunset and got to watch the sun go down from our booth, and also took the opportunity to take some photos from the beautiful ocean front pool at the royal lahaina.
The food was some of the best we’ve had in Hawaii, with the flavor combinations feeling really well thought out. We had the chèvre puffs and kampachi poppers as starters. The poppers were delicious could be easily had another plate. For mains we got the pork chop and the mahi mahi. The pork chop was well cooked and served with bok choy and mango that worked really well together. The mahi mahi had kimchi rice with Portuguese sausage, and a nice lemony flavor.
The baked Hawaiian was a bit sweet for our liking but still delicious. Overall, one of the best meals in a long time and we intend to be back again soon! Thank you to Ford in particular and all the other friendly folks that made the...
Read moreStopped in for an early dinner. We'd made a reservation for later in the evening but were in the area and hungry; the restaurant was near empty so we figured why not grab a bite early? Alas, the hostess could not find a place for us or others despite the restaurant being pretty dead so we ended up sitting at the bar once a couple left. It was weird - there ended up being a line out the door despite a ton of open tables throughout.
Either way, the bartender was very slow for service, though the drinks were relatively cheap (for Hawaii) and decent quality. They were out of multiple menu items and multiple ingredients for others that we ordered, but were only informed of this after we'd ordered. Had a long wait for the food and then salads were brought out at the same time as our entrees.
Bottom line: the view of the water was nice, the food was OK quality, but service was just too poor to justify coming here for dinner. It's probably fine for casual drinks if you get a bar seat. But go somewhere...
