Hadn’t visited in almost a year, so I was excited about my return. We were seated immediately and our waitress was the greeter. We ordered our normal wings and fish dinners. The wings and fish were EXCELLENT! The cabbage and yams were so soft that you didn’t have to chew them. The macaroni was COLD. Cold…. Not luke warm, but cold. After waiting for a while, we got our waitress attn and she went and got more but it was like room temperature. She nooked it in the microwave and it was now edible. They serve can soda for 2 dollars. NO REFILL and it’s a 12 oz. The wings and chicken was the only thing HOT and GREAT!!!! I’ve bn in Memphis for 4yrs now and this is where we ate EVERY other Sunday because my grandsons love the chicken and the owner used to come by the table and greet them and shake their hands and that made their day. The food was great. Affordable and seasoned to perfection. And, you could tip according to your liking and your service. Now the food is over cooked, under seasoned, and the portion size has shrunk. Yet your FORCED to tip. Our macaroni and dressing was a half of the serving container. We understand u all use an ice cream scoop to serve with but half of it is insane while the price has increased. That meal has increased by 3 or 4 dollars since we first became customers. Despite the price, we still try to patronize. But when the quality no longer match the price and service, its time to spend our Sunday money somewhere else. Before I leave, I want to share that they ADD a 20% tip without your permission!!!! They FORCE you to tip for a bad experience. I asked about the tip because we did not get good service and would not have tipped close to 12 dollars for the service we received. The young lady sed you can pay it or don’t come back! So…. U can provide us poor customer service, serve us cold and overcooked sides, and give one refill to my friend and TIP YOURSELF out of OUR hard earned money and we just have to suck it up! Where I’m from, when a person take something from you that u didn’t give them, they are stealing. So yall jus stole, took from, and robbed me of close to 12 dollars in tips that you didn’t deserve! I’m done! Times are hard for everyone. Not just yall….. you went up on the prices. Then you taking our money by proving small portions of the overcooked sides and then taking a tip. Make it make sense. I’m so not happy rt now bcuz we had a four yr tenure there and now I have to dissappt my grandsons by not going back….. I’m...
Read moreThis is my 2nd visit here. Initially I visited with my mom last year during Memphis Black Restaurant Week. We thoroughly enjoyed our food. This time my husband and I arrived on a Saturday about 3:45p.
Our food was out to us hot, fresh and perfectly seasoned in less than 10min. We ordered fried Catfish, fried chicken white meat + an additional piece; a freid chicken thigh (chicken and fish and all sides except Mac and cheese were scrumptious and perfectly seasoned; not too salty alike at many restaurants). All sides ordered were Mac n cheese (looked and tasted generic, not that cheesy goodness like the other pics here on the reviews), cabbage, fries and smothered potatoes. My husband even said while eating his chicken thigh… this is some good fried chicken, and he is a man of few words.
The waitress was kind and checked in on us as well as the chef. At one point, the music on the speakers went out. After trying all they could to get it back up, the staff improvised and just allowed the music to play from their cell phone (way to go yall!) We still rocked our heads while inhaling the wonderful goodness on our plates!
The critique I would give is to put out actual ketchup bottles because I know I’m not the only one that is germaphobic and really hates ketchup packs while dining. Also you guys should consider serving guests with real utensils not plastic ware. If that’s the case, you may as well serve the food on disposable plates and bowls with the plastic ware and ketchup packs as that would feel more cohesive… Just a bit off-putting with the mismatch of service.
Lastly, assure the waitress explains what’s being offered on the menu according to what time guests arrive as our menus were placed on the our table before we were seated and was in the wrong side. This way the guests are not about to order off the weekday brunch menu when brunch is not being served (as we had been looking at that side and about to order from it).
Asked my hubs and he said he’d definitely be back and me too, and hope to update my review to a 5/5 if there are improvements with consistency. Thanks guys for serving awesome food and being open to feedback! : ) And many blessings for years to come in your...
Read moreService: I visited the SugaShack yesterday. (It was Mother's Day, so it was busy which we expected.) My only complaint is that there wasn't a hostess at front. The other patrons waiting had to inform us that they were cleaning tables in order to seat guests. At least two waiters walked by us while we waited so at minimum, the courteous thing to have done would've been to take a few seconds to properly inform us of this. Our wait wasn't long (maybe 10 mins) so it wasn't a big deal.
Food: 7/10 The menu isn't extensive AT ALL!! And I personally think there need to be more healthy options (outside of all the fried dishes) I ordered the fried catfish and my husband ordered the fried chicken. Our food was out in UNDER 10 mins!!! And it was piping hot! The flavor was good, so no complaints there.
Atmosphere: 5/10 It was far too dark in the restaurant for it yo be the middle of the day. The place isn't all that big and I completely understand the need to get as much use out of the space they have but I'm not a fan of sitting shoulder to shoulder with strangers. We spent the duration of our meal unintentionally listening to our "neighbors" conversations. HOWEVER!! The vibe was cool. They had a great gospel Playlist going that had me bobbing my head and singing along. Overall, would I come back the next time I'm in...
