Right when we walked in the door, we were greeted by a very friendly person who gave us a vegan menu when we asked if they had one. He then told us that yesterday was world vegan day and that a lot of people had come to their restaurant especially for the event and that they have a separate vegan menu and are developing more vegan options as well. So that was cool to hear right off the bat.
My friend and I ordered the mushroom masala, chana saag, and roti. Even though the restaurant was busy, our food came out so quickly, like within maybe eight minutes of ordering.
Both of the dishes came with white basmati rice, as usual for most restaurants serving Indian cuisine. The texture of the rice was light and fluffy, and was appetizingly aromatic.
The best part was how amazingly good the mushroom masala was. I've had this dish many times at other restaurants and enjoyed it, but this was definitely my favorite because the sauce didn't overpower the taste of the mushrooms. The sauce was very savory--somewhat smoky--and not too thick.
The chana saag was also delicious. It was a combination of a puréed spinach base and whole chickpeas. It had a creamy texture even though it didn't have any cream, butter, coconut milk, or other plant milk in it.
The dishes were great combined, actually. And they weren't oily! That's very rare, because I feel like a lot of places try to compensate for the lack of animal products by adding a lot of oil or spiciness. Granted, we did ask for these dishes to be prepared mild.
The ambience was great compared to a lot of restaurants, but because this restaurant is in the same space as an old restaurant called Sanctuary, which was so incredibly gorgeous and cozy and had such great lighting and layout, it's hard for me not to compare the look/feel of the two. It's already in such a cool space with exposed wood beams and stone walls, and the lighting of Spice & Tonic is already pretty decent-- it's not too bright and stark like a lot of restaurants are--but it would be even nicer if the whole space were lit a little bit better with golden or amber lights--maybe lanterns or little table faux candles--and if it had more plants, even realistic looking faux greenery.
Anyway, we will definitely be back. The overall experience was great, highly...
Read moreI first started coming here two years ago when they were just starting out. The owner was extremely sweet. I have held off on writing a review because I wanted to see if their amazing food and excellent service would stand the test of time. The owner has taken the time to always remember us no matter how much time has gone by since the last time we’ve been in. We’ve eaten here at least once every few months.
My boyfriend is Hmong and can eat very spicy food. They have a level above hot called Indian spice that he says is excellent. Be prepared for very spicy if you order this level! There is definitely a family feel to the restaurant and the food is always consistently delicious, full of flavor and they are good about giving us refills on rice when dining in. Quality remains high if ordering take out or delivery through doordash as well. We’ve done all three with no complaints.
This place is on my list for top food places in Minneapolis. Highly recommend!!!
Also want to add a small story that solidified why this place is a favorite: One day we didn’t realize they closed between lunch and dinner. The door was still unlocked and we walked in instantly realizing it was empty other than the servers and owner. We apologized thinking we would just come back in an hour. To our surprise, they all gave us a warm welcome and didn’t hesitate to seat us. Every person we interacted with gave us a big smile, reassured us that they were happy we were there and got our order in right away. We thought that maybe the food would be slower since they were still in the middle of dinner prep, but it quickly came out hot and delicious. The owner stopped by to talk to us and they never rushed us out. Such an...
Read moreOutstanding Indian cuisine in the Minneapolis Mill District. Dine in or take out, and you will not be disappointed. Living in downtown, having an easily accessible, family owned Indian restaurant is so nice. If you are visiting from out of town and staying at the nearby Aloft, Depot, Curio , or other hotels, it is an easy walk downtown along Washington in the shadows of the U S Bank stadium and a stone’s throw to the Guthrie Theater. Spice and Tonic is a family owned business; the father was one of the original owners of the bastions of Indian cuisine in the Twin Cities, Taste of India. The tradition lives on now in the Mill District! It is great!! We started with papdum and the spicy snd sweet chutneys: very fresh and robust chutneys. I had to try the Tandoori chicken as an appetizer: succulent, moist, flavorful chicken with fresh onions and lemon garnish. The Chana Masala is incredible: a great blend of chana and a flavor filled masala. The Lamb Vindaloo was tender, tasty, filled with potatoes which are fresh and carry the spice flavor of the vindaloo. The plain naan was great to clean the bowls of any residual sauces. A signature treat as you leave Spice and Tonic are the fennel seeds with small pieces of sugar coated licorice. Finally, the staff is incredibly nice, helpful and polite. The overall dining experience is 10/10. Spice and Tonic should be on your list for outstanding Tandoori, Masala or Vindaloo: the Naan is scrumptious. Highly recommend Spice and Tonic as likely one of the newest, top Indian restaurants in the...
