Right when we walked in the door, we were greeted by a very friendly person who gave us a vegan menu when we asked if they had one. He then told us that yesterday was world vegan day and that a lot of people had come to their restaurant especially for the event and that they have a separate vegan menu and are developing more vegan options as well. So that was cool to hear right off the bat. My friend and I ordered the mushroom masala, chana saag, and roti. Even though the restaurant was busy, our food came out so quickly, like within maybe eight minutes of ordering. Both of the dishes came with white basmati rice, as usual for most restaurants serving Indian cuisine. The texture of the rice was light and fluffy, and was appetizingly aromatic. The best part was how amazingly good the mushroom masala was. I've had this dish many times at other restaurants and enjoyed it, but this was definitely my favorite because the sauce didn't overpower the taste of the mushrooms. The sauce was very savory--somewhat smoky--and not too thick. The chana saag was also delicious. It was a combination of a puréed spinach base and whole chickpeas. It had a creamy texture even though it didn't have any cream, butter, coconut milk, or other plant milk in it. The dishes were great combined, actually. And they weren't oily! That's very rare, because I feel like a lot of places try to compensate for the lack of animal products by adding a lot of oil or spiciness. Granted, we did ask for these dishes to be prepared mild. The ambience was great compared to a lot of restaurants, but because this restaurant is in the same space as an old restaurant called Sanctuary, which was so incredibly gorgeous and cozy and had such great lighting and layout, it's hard for me not to compare the look/feel of the two. It's already in such a cool space with exposed wood beams and stone walls, and the lighting of Spice & Tonic is already pretty decent-- it's not too bright and stark like a lot of restaurants are--but it would be even nicer if the whole space were lit a little bit better with golden or amber lights--maybe lanterns or little table faux candles--and if it had more plants, even realistic looking faux greenery. Anyway, we will definitely be back. The overall experience was great, highly recommended!

Outstanding Indian cuisine in the Minneapolis Mill District. Dine in or take out, and you will not be disappointed. Living in downtown, having an easily accessible, family owned Indian restaurant is so nice. If you are visiting from out of town and staying at the nearby Aloft, Depot, Curio , or other hotels, it is an easy walk downtown along Washington in the shadows of the U S Bank stadium and a stone’s throw to the Guthrie Theater. Spice and Tonic is a family owned business; the father was one of the original owners of the bastions of Indian cuisine in the Twin Cities, Taste of India. The tradition lives on now in the Mill District! It is great!! We started with papdum and the spicy snd sweet chutneys: very fresh and robust chutneys. I had to try the Tandoori chicken as an appetizer: succulent, moist, flavorful chicken with fresh onions and lemon garnish. The Chana Masala is incredible: a great blend of chana and a flavor filled masala. The Lamb Vindaloo was tender, tasty, filled with potatoes which are fresh and carry the spice flavor of the vindaloo. The plain naan was great to clean the bowls of any residual sauces. A signature treat as you leave Spice and Tonic are the fennel seeds with small pieces of sugar coated licorice. Finally, the staff is incredibly nice, helpful and polite. The overall dining experience is 10/10. Spice and Tonic should be on your list for outstanding Tandoori, Masala or Vindaloo: the Naan is scrumptious. Highly recommend Spice and Tonic as likely one of the newest, top Indian restaurants in the Twin Cities.

6/29/23: the new Fish Tikka was very good. Give it a try. 10/28/22: went back with our friends/neighbors. The service was friendly and upbeat. We ordered Butter Chicken, Lamb Bharta, Chicken Biryani, and Coconut Chicken. The sauce were quite good. My wife really enjoyed her lamb dish, our friend (who's not into spices) enjoyed his biryani as well. I wish that the drink menu would indicate the size of the beer bottle, I ordered the Flying Horse and a Pint size bottle came out. We're glad to have this wonderful restaurant in our neighborhood. 7/19/22: I met a colleague over lunch at S&T. The person who opened the restaurant invited me in. We were the first in the restaurant and were seated promptly. Our server (I did not get his name) presented 3 menus: lunch, normal and a "big" menus. My friend went with the Vegetarian Thali #2 and I ordered the Tandoori Chicken from the normal menu. The vegetarian plate looks appetizing and my order tasted good. Service was friendly and unhurried. I'd come back to try others from the "big" menu.

Loved it! We love Indian food and they did not disappoint. Very convenient walk right in front of the US Bank stadium from the main metro line. Got a huge beer (the $10 price made more sense after receiving the bottle that's almost 2 pints). The naan was fabulous and the was more than expected for the price. Samosas were solid but not too special. Safe. Vegetable korma is one of my favorites and I loved it. The tofu masala was also very tasty. Safe options for trying a new place. Quick and easy payment without having to play the waiting game or surrendering your card to the server. As an unusual observation, the menu was super sturdy and gave me a feeling of high quality right from the get-go. If I weren't from out of town, I'd come back here all the time. As of this posting (6/29/23), the cocktail menu was still in development, but their more approachable drinks list was a fine substitute.

While the service was on point and the place was clean with a great atmosphere, the food disappointment a native Indian pallet. I saw almost 5 star reviews and perhaps got my hopes a bit too high. The food tasted okay, but it wasn’t as flavourful as I was hoping. My hubby ordered rogan Josh but it looked completely different from what we would typically have. It tasted okay but it wasn’t rogan Josh and it was lots of garlic. I always like to get samosas for apps as they can easily distinguish good cooking… and these samosas filling was complete potato with barely any spices. Anyway I do think this is a great place for someone who is trying out Indian food for the first time, I think they will enjoy. I am not so sure of folks who are used to a lot more spices and flavours. I appreciated our server and his attentiveness.

Overall their foods were really up to par with those we had in India. The service from Shan was great. He not only possess the skills of understand where his guest come from and place the right recommendations of foods and level of spiciness. During our dine-in session, I noticed Shan know his regular clients well by acknowledging their name and asking about why they did not order their regular dish when they dropped by to pick up their takeaway. Overall here is my rating for their foods which we had ordered: - 1. Vegitable Korma 10/10 2. Chicken Coconut Curry 7/10 3. Chicken Makhani 8/10 4. Tandoori Chicken 7/10 5. Lamb Curry 8/10 6. Garlic Naan 9/10 7. Mango Lassi 9/10 8. Assam Indian Chai 7/10 9. Kheer 8/10 10. Mango Kulfi Will definitely drop by again when we visit Minneapolis in future...
