My husband and I had a visit to Minneapolis for a 3 day concert event. Along with us we had one of his friends as well. We were super excited about the location and when we got to the hotel the parking was easy. I recommend parking on the second floor it's the easiest access to the hotel. You just have to go downstairs to check in. And that's where it begins, to check in you must go down to the bar, yes the bar, there is no check in desk. If you happen to be there on a weekend and it is busy due to a concert or a game or another event good luck getting up to the bar. You'll be able to spot where to check in at because on the bar they have a check-in sign that looks like something from the Bates motel. It was cute but honestly I witnessed a grandmother and grandfatherly couple trying to check in at 10:00 at night on a weekend when there is a 2 day 7 Band Metallica concert happening. I honestly felt so bad for them I hope they had a good stay though. We got on the elevator to unload our luggage in our room, and unfortunately there were no bellboy carts. (At checkout there were none available, unless you preferred the broken option.) please don't do what we did and end up stuck riding the elevator up and down because we had no idea that we had to swipe our key card to get the elevator to go to our floor. Also don't get gung ho and decide that you would hit the buttons for other people because they must swipe their own card as well. We got off the elevator onto the third floor it seemed nice, it wasn't overly fancy looking rooms were pretty close together but no biggie, we were close to the elevator, and the event center. I get the whole minimalist thing, my husband booked the room, and let me tell you the thoughts that we're going through my head when we walked into the room were, not very nice. (My husband did state that he had issues navigating the reservation and was under the impression that we were actually getting a real loft along with the additional room. The website grossly misdirect you thinking you're getting a two-room suite. @ 250 ft, for 3 adults. Two of those adults being grown men. Not a lot of room to move) Imagine my surprise and complete dismay as we walked into the room the bathroom was off to the left pretty normal but what I saw in front of me left me speechless. Maybe not speechless, I was taking a back and immediately in my head screaming no! Would I witnessed were adult bunk beds. A king bed on the bottom and a kind of loft, The county jail type mattress pad on the top. Mind you we are all grown adults, but there was absolutely no privacy in this room whatsoever. Our friends slept on the top bunk and my husband and I slept on the bottom bunk again which left us no privacy there was one chair a janky table hanging up and a TV. The walls were concrete (The walls weren't too bad actually I do like that whole industrial look) with pegs hanging out of them that was a saving grace there. But there were no luggage racks no closet, no coffee maker no amenities no refrigerator and no trash bags in the bathroom or in the room whatsoever. So bring your own trash bags or grocery bags whatever because you'll need them. They have one bin in the bathroom and it's for recyclables? What? Ok, I recycle but this is ridiculous. Not a trash can or even paper bag in sight. (The view is beautiful that was nice) When tell you I turned around from the bay window, utter horror, a window, looking directly into the shower, well what they'd like to say is a frosted window. I ventured over to the bathroom to utilize the facilities and realize that The restrooms only privacy was a sliding barn door. At that point I knew that If I wanted to keep my dignity intact due to a bathroom emergency I would need to go downstairs to the public restrooms. The bathroom was larger, however the shower was glass, but no door and I could see directly into the bedroom from the shower. If I can see them they can see me right? So who's up up for a shower and a show, not me. Again no privacy and another adult in the room that is not my husband. And the only chair in the room is facing directly into that window for the shower so I squatted in the shower when I had to go near the window, for fear of exposure! Back to the restroom door. I close the door well slid the door shut finished up and went to go wash my hands and our sink clogged. And I mean clogged, it actually overflowed. Upon my exit, well attempted exit, I realized the door was not sliding open, I was stuck in the bathroom.! But could still see out the sliding door on either side. Thank God my husband was still in the room, otherwise I would have been stuck in the bathroom for an absorbent amount of time. Come to find out the door got stuck on the bottom of no track just a piece of wood to keep the door ""somewhat in line" . I decided to keep that piece of information in my back pocket just in case it happened again. (Well, it did happen again.) Being suspicious of the door getting stuck on me I decided to gently slide the door the next time I used the facilities, and lo and behold the door would not stay shut. What that means is I'm on the toilet if somebody walked in the door and turn their head to the left we'd be exchanging howdy do's or do do's, or imagine if you will in the middle of the night using the facilities and somebody walking out the door they can see you too. The funny thing is is when we were on the elevator, a gentleman showed us how to use the cards to operate the elevator and said "don't you know this is an upscale hotel?" What gave it away the camp style bunk beds or I don't know, cement walls and floors, or was it the fact that I had to fight my way through people enjoying themselves at the bar and all I wanted was some extra towels, because Lord knows I had no privacy so I had enough towels to cover up. Housekeeping only comes around every other day. You must call down for towels, and most of the staff were very pleasant. I had a couple of staff that were not so much. One night staff member was not very pleasant but I digress. There was a particularly nasty security guard that approached me in the parking ramp. I was waiting for my husband, and I decided that I would have a smoke. I turned around and the security guard started demanding that I go up front to smoke or to walk around through the entry gates to the parking garage. Mind you this is about 10:00 at night, We were headed out for some food because good luck getting any there at the hotel (They have a very small "store" behind the bar but they close that down after 9:00 p.m. ) I've never been to Minneapolis and I did not want to walk out to the street because I did not feel safe. I told the security guard that I would go ahead and put my cigarette out and wait until I left. However he must have not heard me because he kept talking over me after I told him I was putting it out. He continued to tell me I needed to go outside and I continue to tell him I was not going to as he continued to move forward and approach me like I was not a patron or some squatter. Yelling at me telling me he can't have anybody around the doors because it's going to start a fire. I understand sir and I respect the fact that you are doing your job however he was rude and walked away dismissing me as if again I was not a guest. I believe the worst part of the stay was the fact that if you're taller than 4 ft 11, you will end up with several concussions or at least a mild case of amnesia. My husband is 6'2 I am 5'1 both of us were smacking our heads on the top bunk or loft as they call it frame. Anytime you needed to get in bed or out of bed or stand you're under the top loft bed. Now if you're ready to go to sleep really fast go ahead and give yourself a good smack on the head. I was infuriated each time I smacked my head for my ponytail. It was just unacceptable, and to boot my husband smacked his head so hard, I heard it in the bathroom|(Really not a first considering I did not use the facilities for an entire 5 days without somebody being within 3 ft of me.) I thought he fell on the concrete floor, as did his Friend, who is fast asleep in the top bunk. I soon realized after our stay there that there wasn't even a pamphlet any literature or even a Bible or a pen in the room. There is no room service, there is no information to tell you anything about the hotel or the surrounding area. So make sure your DoorDash account is installed on your phone, cuz you'll need it. There's no ice machines there are no vending machines, and if they did have ice machines, you do not get an ice bucket. You must call the bar / check in / concierge. I had insulin that needed to be refrigerated, I was brought up a small pink mini mini mini fridge that held maybe four cans of soda and my insulin. It also came unplugged and the door didn't stay shut, and my insulin went with it. Next day I bought an ice bucket at a local store just to have something in our room. No Continental or free breakfast, no free water, or extra toiletries at the store down in the very spacious ( 1 of 2 ) lobby. I think this is the last bit, my husband went to go take the stairs because the elevator broke, and the stairs were locked. He asked the staff who (one happened to be a manager) he was told by one person that it was a security measure for people getting in. (Oh and by the way after you check out you cannot go back upstairs your card will not work after checkout time.) And the other person told him they didn't know why. And based on where the bar was located in accordance with the main doors from the parking lot, staff cannot see anybody coming in so somebody could potentially sneak in with another person who has a key card. ( Keep in mind that you cannot get past the first floor without a key card) But aren't stairwells supposed to be emergency exits in the event of a fire, or an emergency, or in our case we were just tired of standing on the elevator sweating our butts off because it was broke and 75,000 people from upstairs were trying to come downstairs at the same time. So as far as what we spent versus what we got scores, Moxxy +1 My Family 4 days of disappointment at the cost of $1, 400.000 for the room only. On the plus side you can get delivery from a lovely company, Dank District Deliveries. Shout out to Alex in the black Infinity. Thanks man. They definitely took the edge off, check him out if you're in Minneapolis. There is also a trader Joe's across the street and a wine and liquor market as well. Oh "Gym" was a Schwinn bicycle on stands encased In a small glass room. That's it nothing more. Now, Moxxy I...
Read moreSee below for the good & bad This is a decent enough hotel. I live in Chicago and always thought the Moxy Chicago Downtown looked cool from the outside. So, when traveling to Minneapolis we decided to give it a shot. I have stayed in many Marriot hotels, mostly Cortyard, Springhill, and Fairfield, so I am accustomed to the Marriot brand. Moxy has a very different feel than those hotels, but it was still a decent enough stay.
The Good: This hotel was just ok. The decor is a 5/5 throughout the hotel. It is a very moden hotel with many cool and edgy design elements. It has a similar feel to Aloft in my opinion. A lot of design elements give a cool vibe to the hotel, but dont really offer any physical benifits to your stay. For example, the workout room was very cool from a design standpoint, but there wasn't really too much to do in it. Also, all the employees we interacted with were very nice and helpful, 5/5. Lastly, the hotel and room were very clean and spotless, no complaints there, 5/5.
The Not So Good: There are a couple reasons why I wouldn't give this hotel 5 stars. 1 - First being that the rooms are very small and lack basic amenities. I undertand that Moxy is all about utilizing common spaces (kind of a hostel vibe), but there is no desk, countertop, or even a fridge in the rooms. Only 2 small nightstands and a small sitting chair. We found that throwing our clothes and other stuff on the floor was really the only option. 2 - This is very common in European hotels, but there is no shower door. There is just a glass divider covering about 60% of the opening of the shower, and the rest is just open to the bathroom. This means the air in the shower stays very cold, but also the floor outside the shower gets soaking wet and we had to use our towels to wipe it up, not a great design. 3 - When you check in at Moxy, they give you 1 free drink ticket for the lobby bar per person (I think, there were 2 of us and they gave us 2 tickets). The bar was supposed to be open until midnight so after dinner around 10pm we went down to the bar to find that the bartender on duty had been sent home because it was a slow night. I understand cutting staff when it is slow, but now i'm stuck with 2 drink tickets and nothing to show for them. I guess ill try them at the Chicago Moxy and see if they will honor them.
Overall, this was just an ok stay. I knew what I was signing up for when staying here, but it still left me feeling slightly disatisfied. I am very accustomed to the Cortyard, Springhill, Fairfield, Residence vibe of Marriot hotels, so this was a very different experiance for me. I find those other Marriot brands more "comforting" than botique hotels like Moxy, but that's just what they are. If that's the kind of vibe you are looking for,...
Read moreGood hotel, above average due to finishes, but not the best ever so giving it a 4 vs a 5. Room and all common areas were all very well updated, clean, very large tv in room, great HVAC (no excessive noises during the night). Nice covered parking with in/out pass (Pickup truck friendly with the height).
good cost per night during our stay.
Stay was not during football season, and i can imagine it gets very packed and crowded game weekends.
Room size was on the smaller side, but not an issue for us, as we spent more time out of the room (but did use it during the day for remote work). liked the floor to ceiling windows, and good blackout curtains for sleeping.
Check-in is at the bar, which can be frustrating when there is a long line, or a customer issue and the bartender can't check people in (even if the bar is empty). It was a nice day, and the bar is able to open it's massive windows for an indoor/outdoor experience, so that was nice while we waited.
If you are working from home during your stay, the room had a small desk, and chair hanging up (see photos) so it was ok for one of us to work in the room, but the other went to the common area which had plenty of seats, desks, and was like a coffee shop vibe (noise level too).
looks like it's connected to a residential property that has a pool, but don't think the hotel has access to it (We didn't ask because we planned to use a local lake, and didn't see that as an amenity). would be smart of them to work that in if possible.
No special Elite status recognition, no upgrade, no breakfast, or Elite lounge. They do give a free drink at check in. We didn't use it (marathon training currently).
Great location for not being in the middle of the city. Walking distance to the Vikings stadium, Starbucks across the street was great for the morning. Close to the Mississippi river, and used the trail going east and south for my morning runs (hilly compared to what i'm use to). would be nice to walk or e-scooter too if you like. also close to highways, if you're going to be traveling to other places during your trip.
Keycards worked either better than usual when using them for the elevator or door, or i'm just finally figuring out better spots to put them on the sensor hahaha.
I did not use the Gym. looked on the smaller size, so make sure they have the equipment you're looking for if that's important to you. there was only one other person there in the morning, so wasn't super crowded...
