If I could rate this restaurant by the Manager Eric it would be a negative. I have never experienced discrimination in a restaurant until I came to Umbra Minneapolis. I made my reservations for 2 almost 7 days in advance and I received notification on my phone the day of reminding me to check in with the host for my reservation at 9pm. My guest and I reserved the Canopy Hotel for the night as well because they are connected. We parked the car in the underground parking and checked in with the waitress by 9pm. She asked us do we want to sit by the fire and we said yes (beautiful fire but the draft from the door was worse). We stayed by the fire and the waitress bring us water. As she was taking our order it was 9:05pm. I asked my waitress, "is there wild mushrooms in the Scallop Dinner?" She said, "let me check because I'm not sure." She came back within 10 seconds and said, " the cook said the kitchen is closed." I asked her why did Umbra Minneapolis allow us to make this reservation, send a waitress, and make us wait, just to tell us the kitchen is closed. The waitress said, I will go get the manager (Eric). The manager came out and didn't apologize for the kitchen being closed or acknowledge or disappointment in the situation. The manager said "our kitchen is closed because we ran out of food and was only allowed to extend our ours because of the Governor. You can order wine and Flatbread only." I said, we don't want either and we booked the hotel because of the restaurant reservation. manager says, " I don't think the hotel will allow me to cancel your reservation for you but let me go check." My guest and I started talking and I noticed 15 minutes had passed and the manager or the waitress never came back to assist us. So I asked my guest did he see the manager and he said, " yes, I just saw the manager in the backpack of the kitchen. But I dont see the waitress. So I went over to the hotel and told the Front Desk Clerk how we felt discriminated against and the manager was rude and disrespectful. The Front Desk clerk said, "the manager name is Eric and we at Canopy get a lot of complaints from "certain" guests about how rude he is to certain people but I tried to tell my General Manager Keith Kramer (general manager of the hotel and Chef Enthusiast) and he does nothing. Its sad." The Front desk clerk gave us 50% off the hotel and apologized for the restaurant staff and manager behavior. Umbra Minneapolis will never see me or my black face because I could have acted like a complete fool but I was very respectful and got disrespected. This is why African American race scream, yell, and curse because that's the only way people hear us. But this review is my screaming and yelling. My cry for help to change the Manager...

Update: Dinner in March 2024 now was disappointing. The charcuterie tray was fine but there was what looked like boxed crackers sitting on it. The cheese and the meats were good but there wasn't anything really very original included. My date and I were very disappointed to see that they no longer offer elk or lamb. So we ordered the pork and buffalo. It was not as interesting or as delicious as what we had experience before. I did enjoy my Pirate Jenny drink. The music that Saturday evening started late at 7p and wasn't lifting our mood. We were really disappointed and spent been a lot of money. Our waiter had been fine but then at the end of our meal (and I told her what time we needed to get going to get to the Guthrie) I had to go and hail her so that we could get our bill. This was very different than our last experience and all the former experiences we've had at the restaurant. The new menu is not very interesting to me or my friend. My date said he would not go back there again even though it is close to the Guthrie we will seek out other restaurants.

The former review....Our server got us moving along quickly so we didn't miss out Guthrie performance. Last time we were leisurely. The keyboard musician Jon Pemberton was great! The Elk was perfect. I need to add that our server thanked my veteran friend for his service. (I guess he read his hat) The server gave him a complimentary drink as well as the kind words. I have to say that the drinks and food were even a notch above the last time we visited. We actually did not like the giant ice cubes in our crafted coctails last time. The cocktails were so perfect...definitely have to come to come back to experience the quality on October 12th. Are you getting better and better with the days?? I hope when I return for my 5th time that this standard of October 12th continues...and have Jon Pemberton performing as well! I will be back for the wait staff, the Pirate Jenny ( why did that taste even better than other times? Yummy! ) The Elk and...

Amazing evening with several lady friends. Really enjoyed the ambiance and live music. Everyone else’s food looked great! I realize that I was part of a larger group and that I arrived later than everyone else. Things were super busy and confusing. I was patient. But, I never got the chance to eat.

When I was finally able to get the server’s attention, I ordered a drink and asked a question about the burger. She looked annoyed. I apologize if I needed additional information to ensure that I wouldn’t have an allergic reaction. The server told me that she would have to ask the kitchen my question. I waited for a response for 45 minutes, and never got an answer. I am super hungry at this point. I decided to just be safe and hopefully quick. I got the attention of the server again, and just asked to order a side salad. She said ok, and walked away. Another 45 minutes, and no side salad. One thing that I am not going to do is beg. My friends were still hanging out and having a great time. One more set for the band. But, I had to find the server again and ask for the check for my drink so that I could pay and go home and eat. Leaving when I was having a great time with my friends because I was not going to be able to have additional drinks or be comfortable because I had not gotten the chance to eat in the 2 hours that I was there….doesn’t make me look favorably on an establishment. I went to the restaurant hungry because I thought that I would be able to buy food. I loved the place, but if I ever return with my friends I will have to eat before I arrive, which is a bummer because the menu...

Really great ambiance and location, especially prior to Guthrie shows. Food was good, people friendly. I believe this place is pretty new, so giving them a hall pass as they get up to speed. (If this was a well established place i would give 2 stars.) Felt like a smaller, less experienced version of the Hewing and the restaurant there. Things they need to work on: - no host stand or apparent person to talk to to check in when I arrive. -beer menu seemed thin - ordered the charcuterie board, it was fine. Server could not tell me what was what on the board. (I could figure it out, but that's not the point....) - two tables next to us stayed empty but dirty for nearly the whole meal. Granted they weren't busy and didn't need them, but this is a nice place.... keep the tables clean. - food came out in a timely fashion. My duck was tasty but a bit cool. Certainly not hot. - wife had the flat bread which was also good, not amazing. - had two menus which was a little confusing (pictured). One was the main menu with apps, entrees, sides, etc. Then the other had a different menu of sides, and on the back were the flat breads (which was nice as my wife doesn't eat a ton of meat and there were no soups, salads, etc. She was happy to discover the flat breads) . I don't think it was a happy hour menu. Will certainly give them another chance in a month or two but I hope they work out the kinks.

We almost missed the opportunity to enjoy one of the best meals we have ever had. It is our first trip to the Twin Cities and after a day exploring the Mall of America, we decided on an early dinner downtown. We were greeted by an extremely rude hostess named Narissa who looked my husband and I up and down and said, "Yes?" We said we were wanting to have dinner and she said , "Just you two?" We said yes and she pointed at a high top table and said, "You can sit there." We were cold from walking around a bit downtown, so the only thing that kept us from leaving as a result of her rudeness was not wanting to brave the cold, wet weather again so soon. So that's the bad. Let's talk about the good! Allison (Allie) was our server and she was amazing: gracious, friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. The food was spectacular. Paul had the spicy mussels which were the best we've ever had. He also had the meatball appetizer and this might have been the best marinara and the best meatball of our lives. Those who know how much I love to cook Italian food, know that's saying something. I had the filet and it was perfectly prepared. I ate every bite of my root vegetables as well. Fresh made, warm bread. And the drinks!!! Try the Livin' on a Pear and the Cherry on a Sppin. You won't be disappointed if you can get beyond the rude hostess! 10 stars!
