Not too many restaurants in the downtown Mobile area are open on Sunday. I’m sure glad Chuck’s was!
Like most places downtown, it’s an old building that has multiple large rooms on two levels. There is some second floor outdoor/balcony seats, but we visited on a chilly night and opened for indoor. It was slow season and so we got seated as walk ins.
The food and service turned out to be exceptional!
We tried the spring rolls and a cup of gumbo as starters. Spring rolls were really good. Light, not oily, tasty and flavorful. The gumbo on the other hand was delectable! Lots of crab and veggies, full of flavor and not because it was overly salted. I loved it! Wish I had got a bowl to share instead of a cup.
For entrees, I got the triple tail grillled with creamy crawfish sauce, risotto and carrots. My wife also got the the triple tail (fish of the day) but, Parmesan crusted with risotto and haricot verts.
My grilled version was perfect! Julie’s crusted fish was almost as good. Both fish portions were just big enough and cooked perfectly. We thoroughly enjoyed these entrees. If you have not had triple tail, it’s similar to grouper but a little less flaky and less fatty. Always a good choice when available.
I was teetering on the seared scallops, which I’m sure would have been good as well, but I am so happy with my selection. The scallops can wait for the next visit.
Janna (sp?)was our server and she, along with the other staff, treated us like royalty. Checked on us often, gave great recommendations and made sure we were enjoying the visit. She was helpful with wine options as well as gave good descriptions of the entrees. She stated friendly and upbeat without being overbearing. Ask for her and you would not be disappointed.
The sushi looked good but we were in a different mood. Needed something a little more savory. I would not hesitate to try a roll on a future visit.
We will put Chuck’s on our priority list whenever we are in Mobile which is a few...
Read moreHeard about Chuck's and wanted to give it a try so we went around 8 on a Saturday with a reservation. We were greeted and seated quickly by friendly staff. The inside dining space is small, which is expected for these downtown spaces, but the seating is optimally arranged. I did think it was a bit too loud, which can be attributed to having so many people in a small space. I also didn't like that the servers seemed to be rushing all over.
Having looked over the menu and prices beforehand, we expected smaller portions and excellent service. I was disappointed that there was no bread or breadsticks served. I'd ordered apps as my meal and they were mistakenly brought out before the other person's meal. I didn't complain about it though cause it happens, but management graciously took it upon themselves to remedy it at the end of our meal. The $5 crack fries in a bag were very, very good and definitely did not need to be eaten with the ketchup served on the side. They were served warm but not hot. I also had the $7 spring rolls, which were only two for the price. They were hot and crispy but had a strong funky taste to them. I was only able to eat them by dipping them in the chili sauce served on the side to mask the taste.
My companion had the grouper and gouda grit cake. The fish was cooked to perfection but the grit cake was room temp which was disappointing.
Another incident that made us question a return trip was when a different server brought two salads to our table that were for the people sitting next to us. I was able to stop him from setting them down and he apologized and stepped around to the other table.
Overall, I think the entree portions are proper but the prices need to be justified in the quality and flavor of the food. We'll give Chuck's another try during the week, as the night we went might've been one of their...
Read moreWe had an incident a few weeks ago and after careful consideration I decided to write a review so that those who need a service animal present with them know what to expect at Chucks.
Some people do not look like they have a disability but they need a service animal. My friend is that person and her dog Baby is trained to serve. Baby wears her distinctive service dog vest and her manners rival most humans, she is very aware that she is there for a job as she is all business in public.
Those with disabilities are supposed to be protected under the ADA to not be discriminated against in public/private spaces and businesses are NOT allowed to request documentation as it includes medical information pertaining to why they need a service animal. But your hostess did not hesitate to interrogate us after we were halfway to our table to have us “prove” the need for a service animal which is illegal. It was humiliating to have other guests watch and listen as we had to “prove” that Baby is a legal service animal and that she needed to speak to her manager. Your hostess only let us to our table once official documentation was shown, again very illegal and disturbing that she went to such lengths and honestly we should have left right then and there because we ultimately spent $100+ at a local business for a hostile experience.
Anyone who is discriminated against with a disability can file a formal complaint against a business with the ADA(there will be record of our experience here at Chucks).
Also there are nicer restaurants over the bay that will happily welcome you and your four legged helper without an interrogation or the...
