This review will be more in depth then most. I went to the Galley with friends, so I asked for their opinions too.
We called ahead, they had an hour wait. We were prepared for that, so we took in the views of the Bay. These views can be seen throughout your dinner and it’s gorgeous. We were able to see some sea lions and a beautiful sunset.
They have a very large wine selection and great cocktails. Unless you want a domestic bottled beer, this isn’t your place for beer. They currently only had two on tap.
3 out of the 4 of us started with a bowl of the clam chowder. The moment I took the first bite, I knew I was going to be very happy that we chose this place for dinner. Some of the best Clam Chowder I’ve ever had.
The odd one out ended up getting a starter. This however benefits this review because Rod ended up ordering just about all of the starters. In his words: Oysters were “licking the beach” good. Very briney and fresh. Scallops: perfectly cooked, sauce was complex but muted, really let the fresh scallops shine through. Crab cakes: was most impressed by these. Lots of fresh crab meat without a bunch of garbage fillers a lot of places add. Fresh and masterfully prepared. I loved this place mostly because the overall vibe was exactly what they presented themselves to be. There was no “gimmick”, no designer cocktails (the martini was just an excellent basic martini—exactly as it should be), no massive bourbon list or microbrews, no trendy design. Just really fresh, good seafood, simply prepared, in a perfect location, with a chill, attentive, and knowledgeable waitstaff. - Rod
I ordered the Blackened Pacific Rockfish with the vegetable medley and fries. I could have chosen the garlic mashed potatoes, which I’m sure were absolutely delicious, but I have an obsession with fries. There is only one thing I didn’t like and that’s the fact that it was gone way too fast.
One buddy ordered the special with halibut over rice and the other ordered fish and chips. There was not one bad thing any of us could say about our dinner.
Just when I thought they were finished, they offered us dessert and we couldn’t say no. They brought out the best crème brûlée I’ve ever had. This was extremely surprising; due to the fact that I wouldn’t expect this from a seafood restaurant. We requested a side of ice cream with caramel drizzle.
That was the food but I sure would be remiss if I didn’t mention how fantastic the service was. From the time we stepped through the door, until the time we left, we felt well taken care of. I wish more than anything that I could remember the name of the nice lady who served us
We would gladly return...
Read moreHaving been coming here for years, my wife and I had our first concerning meal tonight. The past times we have come it has always left us feeling as this is the best restaurant in Morro Bay. Tonight was something else though. Our appetizer was fantastic and well prepared, the crab cakes are phenomenal. However, we usually come here for the fish entrée and they were a big let down. The grill was obviously not heated evenly as my swordfish was half overcooked and half perfect. My wife's ahi was among the worst "raw" seared ahi we have had. It felt like they slapped a frozen ahi filet on the grill and cooked it just enough to thaw the center while almost burning the outer fish. Usually when we have had "raw" seared ahi it is only seared on one side, not both. The side dishes were good. The asparagus was seasoned well and cooked well, just a bit crunchy with salt and pepper. The rice pilaf was well seasoned and the right consistency. It was a very out of character night for the Galley for us and we hope it was a one time occurrence. One thing that was a shock is that our waitress actually never inquired as to how our main dishes were. Overall I can't knock the Galley for one bad night, but this is concerning considering the summer is upon us which means the busy tourist season. I'd still recommend checking it out as it has been consistently my favorite restaurant in Morro Bay for years. That being said, if you have an issue,...
Read moreThe food and the view were great, the scallops in particular were incredible. We had to wait for a table for a while, which was fine given I knew it was first come first serve, but there was a table available that the host gave to a party who I guess had put their names down earlier but who said they were 20 minutes away. So I don’t totally understand how the seating policy works. I was mostly disappointed because I brought my partner to Morro Bay for a birthday trip and this was his birthday dinner, and I told the host who said he would tell the chef, so I thought there would be some kind of birthday dessert or something, but nothing came, and when I lingered a bit hoping that there would, the host came over again and very politely asked us about our meal but in a way that made my partner say “I think that’s code for we should probably leave now.” I was really bummed about not being able to do something for his birthday here. I would probably come back again for the scallops, I just don’t think I would try to have any important...
