The name may be One Star, but trust me, in the dive bar world, it's a Five Star experience. Classy, friendly and expedient service from Joe and Tracey behind the bar. After a couple of trips in after work, I felt like I fit right in here. And now there is nowhere that I'd rather be for happy hour--or at any hour, for that matter.
Besides Joe just being a great all around guy (Tracey's plenty cool too), what is so great about One Star, you ask? Well, for starters, they have VERY good prices on beer and mixed drinks--$5 beer with plenty of options at that price, a $7 glass of well bourbon that might be the best bourbon value in Manhattan. The drinks are all very well made, and I have yet to see anything that costs more than $12--pretty awesome considering that we're talking about Manhattan.
I was there with a date on a Saturday night and we decided to try Trivia Night--which btw is 7:30 every Saturday. It's very easy going and you don't get pulled in if you don't want to be. But, if you decide to play, you do have to be aware of the Traveling Trivia Sharks who really know there stuff. I think I got 5 questions out of about 50, so don't feel bad if you are not keeping up with the Sharks.
One small thing to add--these guys have a couple of super fast phone chargers behind the bar. One of them charged my Samsung Galaxy almost 50% in 30 minutes! Small thing, but how many places offer that kind of stuff?
All in all, One Star is the perfect antidote to Manhattan's generally overpriced bar scene, and the people running the place are superb!
Highly...
Read moreA friend and I seeked out an unpretentious place to drink and hang out. Bourgeoise be damned!
One Star's self-proclamation as a "...dingy hole. On a deadish street. With cans instead of bottles..." Sounded perfect.
And it was.
We started with a "High Beam". A 'special' listed on the chalkboard on the wall. A shot of Jim Beam and a tall can Miller High Life ("The Champagne Of Beers") ($9).
Perfect.
A happy surprise was the handful of actual taps rather than every beer being in cans. A sample of a craft porter revealed a fine brew.
Joe the bartender was attentive, friendly, talkative when it became apparent that that was what we were looking for.
As my friend said, and I entirely agree:
Joe is a 6-star bartender in a 5-star bar with a 1-star moniker. Thanks for the amazing evening , Joe!

“We have gay beer in June””Employee of the month: Intentionally left blank”, a New York style handshake combo of a Miller High Life and a shot of Jim Beam. This place doesn’t take itself too seriously and neither should you.
They have a great curated selection of local beers on tap and even Guinness. Prices are far too reasonable for Manhattan and service far too good for a bar...
