Started with a 5-star review but when I went back for a cup of coffee, didnāt feel good leaving it up. Itās a great space for getting work done, very chill street, and the service was friendly but there seemed to be a weird culture of pressure to upsell. They donāt have drip coffee, so I was willing to pay $6 for an americano as priced on the board. Server said there were two kinds of beans, whiskey- and rum-infused. Definitely made it sound like those were the options, not extras. I asked why my plain back americano in my own reusable cup was totaled $8 when the menu said $6, was told then the whiskey-whatever was more. Tried to get me to buy it anyway because heād already ground the beans. Said something about average sales and would not charge me $6 unless I waited for someone else to come in so he could split the bill (so inflating average sales???) The whole thing felt off, so I left without coffee and without giving them the sale at all. Super weird exchange. To be clear: the service was great. Felt more like a bizarro corporate greed situation coming from the top. Even in this city and āthis economyā I was shell-shocked by the hidden costs and sneaky upsell. Had to leave my perfect shady spot :/, but found $3 coffee...

Ā Ā Ā Read moreJust visited on Monday 10/31 8:40am. I have visited the location in Chelsea and I enjoyed it, so I decided to go to this location as it's by work. For context I am Asian American. The man ordering appeared to be Caucasian, and the barista appeared to be so as well. The barista asked the man if he worked or lived in the area as he would get a discount. She wished him a happy Halloween and then came my turn. I placed my order, and the billing screen came up. No ask whether I lived or worked in the area, I had to tell her I worked in the neighborhood which then prompted her to enter the discount. I stood aside as I waited for my coffee. No happy Halloween. Then a couple appearing to be Caucasian placed their order. She asked them if they lived or worked in the area.
I am VERY disappointed, and my day is off to a disheartening start. Perhaps the barista forgot to ask me, but it seemed to me obvious that it was an implicit microaggression. This is the most dangerous kind, as it most often goes unaddressed or unacknowledged. Given this Puerto Rican coffee shop is in itself promoting a minority group I did not expect this. This place needs diversity and...
