I don't have sushi enough in this city, period. So I can't say I have a ton of Manhattan specific context in which to place Amber... but I will say, YUM. Maybe I cheated... my date had been there quite a few times, knowing what to recommend. Always nice to have the inside scoop though.
This was my first foray into Nigiri, which I will say was interesting. Something about having the sushi tucked in all surrounded by rice in the Maki seems to tone back the fishiness a bit I guess. And darn it, it's much easier for the dipping part, which I always seem to foul up anyhow. I think it being divided out into the smaller tidbits though in the Maki makes for a better overall taste.
My favorites were definitely the Ocean Roll (rock shrimp and avocado topped with spicy snow crab and dry seaweed). Absolutely perfect. I could eat this um on a weekly basis?!? And the seaweed salad with miso dressing was perfect too. Mighty...

Amber is a restaurant that people will always return to without fail. This terrific restaurant has a wide variety of sushi and appetizers like the spicy Rock Shrimp. Additionally, Amber has exceptional service because the staff are friendly, helpful, and attentive. Upon entering the restaurant, the atmosphere is very cozy and warm. Amber has upscale prices, but you are paying for guaranteed satisfaction.

Ordered pan fried pork dumplings, thai green curry with chicken and chicken drunken noodles. The dumplings were acceptable, but both the green curry and drunken noodles were insipid, devoid of any flavor and mere reflections of how the dish should taste. We through it was just a lack of salt that made them so unappetizing, but salt did not fix the problem. I do not say this lightly, but this was one of the worst renditions of those two thai dishes that I have experienced in New York.
